Here's a fun (or maybe not) fact. I didn't pick my forum name because of The B-52s original version of the song. I do love The B-52s though. And I also love Botch, who did a cover of Rock Lobster on their rarities/b-sides/etc album. I love it but I'm also way too biased to know if it's any good, really.
But I really felt when she was whining about the state of pop music a few years ago she should have done metal covers of her songs and put them out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hKiAdm6fuc

Ehh, that's a pretty weak cover of a song that topped charts all over the world and sold millions of singles, and was track #11 on Madonna's The Immaculate Collection greatest hits album.
She's clearly not as strong a singer, and they don't even try to put their own style on the song.
This is probably the most impressive bit of song editing I've ever seen; doubly so when you realise that they didn't just put the vocals together, the beats are an entirely different set of songs mixed in behind the vocals, and they've _also_ spliced the relevant videos together:
Re: eurobeat -- there are an awful lot of significantly up-tempo covers of classic songs out there. Some of them are not great, but the ones that actually take the original track and do something interesting with it are a lot of fun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p5iz89fZ20
(original and again you most likely know it. The other two are fun and goofy, but I think this one stands on its own, the version of the synth line 20 seconds in just slays me)
(his first hit was in 1977; I saw him live in '97 or so, by which time this was part of the set; the video above is from 10 years after that, and he was still touring earlier this year, this is a guy with a lot of endurance)

I can't believe how bad you all are at this. A thread about covers and not a single solitary post of the reigning kings of covers, the mad comedy geniuses over at 2 Minutes to Late Night? For shame
Scooter are taking the original and making it into something else, but somehow it feels like an actual other version of the song, if Billy Idol had been making dance music. Also, if you're going to cover Billy Idol, MC HP is a pretty decent equivalent.
Their version of The Logical Song feels a bit less worthwhile -- Scooter are no Supertramp, so it's more like just they're just taking bits of the song and chewing them up into a Scooter track:
And when they did I Was Made For Loving You, there's really not a lot going on there at all -- they're just upped it from 130 to 150 bpm and switched out the drums, there doesn't seem to be a lot of point to this one:
David Brothers had a really good little thread about covers of rap songs yesterday, and the example he gives at the end is fucking fantastic
(there's more to the full thread, I'm just posting the highlights)
And, given Ice-T showed up at the start of one of those, here's some stuff that is right on the very outer edge of "cover" or "remix", it's just tracking samples, but what the heck:
No jokin', I'm sleepin' with my eyes open
Wanted for a homicide ride, the gun's still smokin'
Didn't know what I was doin' but did it anyway
Now the posse's on my trail, they say I'm gonna pay (Run!)
I had a gun, it's mine and I packed it
Out with my crew, the boys caught some static
Me and this sucker punk went at it
Bang! Nine automatic
Hunted Child
I'm the Hunted Child
(There's a fair numberof songs that just use the sample along with other ones, but for here I'm sticking with ones that have the sample in their title / are entirely based around it.)
First: "Honey Child", by Benedict Bros. Yeah, it's just a sample (these all are), but they're doing good work looping the end of "gun's still smoking // didn't know" into "no joking I'm sleeping with my eyes open". Also, Ice-T's voice actually stands up fairly well when sped up like this, and the distinction between "hunted child" and "honey child" is not clear unless you know what it originally said:
(and here's another version of the previous one with the sample slowed down even more. And then somewhat disappointingly after the initial breakdown it's just, like, a donk? I mean fair enough, it's from Wigan Pier, so donk goes with the territory, but it feels like there could have been more to it)

Or here's a more complete list with the lyrics annotated line-by-line and the song(s) they came from.
The same people have done a bunch of the same sorts of thing for individual years; here's 1987, for example:

Also Mob with long legs looks freaky.

Seeing as how it's the first day of fall, and we're creeping further into Halloween season, here's one of my seasonal favorites:
Here's a somewhat famous mashup from one of my close friends dj bc:
And another one from a more recent project:
Some mashups by people I don't know:
Daft Punk/Beastie Boys (there's a whole album of this)
A classic: Gnarls Barkley/The Raconteurs
Here's a few song covers... in the surf rock style! Part of my growing tiki playlist.
What's not to love?
but here's an interesting article about white people making covers of rap songs and how to do it more or less well. And this is another article about when it's done very badly.
Scooter are taking the original and making it into something else, but somehow it feels like an actual other version of the song, if Billy Idol had been making dance music. Also, if you're going to cover Billy Idol, MC HP is a pretty decent equivalent.
Their version of The Logical Song feels a bit less worthwhile -- Scooter are no Supertramp, so it's more like just they're just taking bits of the song and chewing them up into a Scooter track:

this was just last page, but it's relevant to this discussion
Let's start off with this:
The first verse has been reused in a fair number of different ways:
(There's a fair number of songs that just use the sample along with other ones, but for here I'm sticking with ones that have the sample in their title / are entirely based around it.)
This one is just taking the "Bang! Nine automatic" line and turning it into an instrument on its own, almost:
And this time they're actually slowing Ice-T down:
(and here's another version of the previous one with the sample slowed down even more. And then somewhat disappointingly after the initial breakdown it's just, like, a donk? I mean fair enough, it's from Wigan Pier, so donk goes with the territory, but it feels like there could have been more to it)
