So my mom just sent me a text saying the news is showing footage of people being forced out of the CHOP, loading up moving vans and shit. I have no idea where she's seeing it, and I'm guessing since that hasn't been posted here, it's not true.

This is the lastest news from Seattle AFAICT

This is why we can’t have nice things
Well, this and cops. Cops are also why we can’t have nice things,

    Why not both?

    ... of course.

(Someone at a march I attended on the weekend had a sign saying “you never see the KKK and the police butting heads for the same reason you never see Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus in the same room” and I thought it was a bit long winded but she’s not wrong).

I think there's a huge generational divine in England re. Ireland

Older to middle aged people can be extremely racist. Younger people don't really think about it at all, and often don't understand why there is any fuss at all. Which is pretty bad in of itself tbh, but it does highlight just how virulently anti-Irish the country has been over the years.

Myself I don't think that Northern Ireland has much business existing. It should reunify. But that's also not a particularly common view.

The unspoken thing amongst people here who want a reunified Ireland is that the Republic literally cannot afford it, due both in part to the recession a decade ago here and also england's tremendous job of deliberately neglecting the North

Oh absolutely. Although that's basically true everywhere in Britain that isn't the Home Counties or I guess Manchester, Edinburgh and Leeds to an extent. My county's economy resembles a post-soviet state region far more than it does a county down south. And compared to places like the North-East, and the far-North West, the Coastal regions, the West Coast of Scotland...

Part of that is due to Northern Ireland's deep political incompatibility with anywhere else too. Like just look at it in the last few years; basically no government because everyone agreed that to keep the peace we all need to let the area run it's own affairs, but it's too broken politically to do so. Fundamentally speaking I think it needs to re-unify with Ireland but then I suppose what does the more militant wing of the Ulster Provisionals do?

It is very easy to hoodwink people as they do not know where they stand and where they are going

    https://wtop.com/national/2020/06/nypd-closes-controversial-anti-crime-unit-in-nod-to-reform/
The anti-crime unit took on many of the duties of the former Street Crime Unit, which was closed in a largely symbolic move after it was hit with a racial profiling lawsuit and four of its officers killed Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo in 1999 in a barrage of 41 shots.

    So, yeah, probably.

Clicking through to the article, there was also an off-duty firefighter who witnessed the incident (and its concordant lack of medical care) and also tried to report the incident to a supervisor

Two professionals saw it as it was happening, went through "proper channels," and it did nothing

isn't the entire police force technically an anti-crime unit

Like, yeah, but also no. Stuff like the movie and television unit or ceremonial unit isn't really in the business of dealing with crime.

Regardless, it's all branding - anti-crime specifically refers to (generally) plainclothes officers who are supposed to be more proactive than reactive, and can stop crimes that would have happened in the future by tracking illegal firearms and the like. Of course in practice this means a lot of tricking people into committing crimes for the purpose of arresting them.

Note also that the NYPD anti-crime unit has been disbanded previously, back in 2002. Because they shot and killed a black man with no warning. So I wouldn't be too quick to take this at face value.

For the past three weeks we've been seeing video of crowds of citizens with no training acting like Spder and or Bat men. Batmans. Spider-people. When somebody tries to fire an arrow into a crowd of people or set off a bomb they beat their ass until the would be terrorist is subdued but never kill them instead leaving them to be processed by the criminal justice system.

Meanwhile police officers who have presumably more than zero training can't handle "sass mouth" with anything but shooting somebody to death. They see all physical objects and sometimes imaginary objects as guns.

This is maybe something to consider when it comes to the narrative about how we could ever possibly replace cops.

one small part of current events that I find kind of fascinating is the evolution of the "Boogaloo" right-wing militia movement

My (potentially totally wrong) understanding is that the boogalosers are sorta different than a lot of right wing militia types in that they don't really have a unifying ideology like say, white supremacy, to really being them together beyond their collective hatred for authority. So like there's some white supremacists and some anti government types and some folks who might even be leftists if they hadn't happened to fall in with this crowd and some folks who don't really give a shit and just want an excuse to start a gunfight in the streets, and there's just sorta generally a lot of infighting amongst them

They all wanna start another civil war but they don't necessarily agree on why

based on what i've seen of them you're basically right. there's oldschool not-necessarily-racist preppers mixed in with hardcore rahowa types but mostly they are twenty- or thirty-something dudes who spend three large on an AR and accessories and like pretending they're Operators. there isn't really a unifying ideology like with atomwaffen or the oathkeepers or those types

    It's fuckin infuriating.

That is a very busy road right off loop 610 inside the loop, and it occurred on the grounds of a business. There is no way it was a suicide. No way in hell.
