Also I finally got solo flawless Pit of Heresy done today and on the first try today too. I hadn't tried since the summer because that shit gets tedious at a certain point because you've got your strat down and it's just stupid mistakes or bad luck that get you and it just takes so damn long most of the time that I'd just go do something else. But I figured I had the time tonight so fuck it and BAM.
I just barely avoided falling to my death in the maze before the final boss. Just clutched a mantle at the last second. And I couldn't even remember what I'd decided on for the boss so I went with well+sword+witherhoard and very carefully 4 phased it.
The most annoying part of the whole thing, by far, remains the stupid ogre maze between the first and second encounters. The amount of time you have to spend just standing around waiting for the ogres to just stop fucking camping the door you need to use is really goddamn dumb.
1 down, 2 to go before the taken/hive barrier mods go away. Although Shattered Throne is kinda tedious so I'm thinking I'll leave that till the last minute and shrug if it doesn't happen.
congrats, for me the ogres arent an issue its just boring sitting there waiting, the chamber of suffering is awful the first time I got past that damn thing is when I got my solo flawless. Sadly it took a million times to get past it lol
The Chamber of Suffering is tough but in a good way. I don't mind that. It's tedious shit like waiting for the goddamn ogres to leave that I hate.
Shattered Thone is the worst for that stuff because it takes so damn long to get to the Ogre boss, who is basically the only challenging part of the entire affair until you get to the end boss. With maybe the exception of the stupid Anor Londo Ogre section.
I love that there’s clearly a vex+exo story and something that’ll lead us beck to earth story that are not even hinted at in that trailer
Fallen are always just set up as a smoke screen for badder baddies
Fallen as enemies have never been that compelling imo. They work good as just general mooks, wandering the system and shit-disturbing. But any time they try and put them front and centre they just lack the gravitas of the Vex or the Hive especially and the Cabal to a lesser extent.
I think it's gonna end up a lot like Forsaken though. The whole Fallen part is gonna be a storyline that we resolve during the campaign who's main purpose is to introduce a new enemy faction (stasis fallen) and the real meat of the narrative in Y4 will be whatever comes after that involving the Exo and the Vex and the pyramid ship and all that.
I kinda like that the Fallen and the Cabal are more simpler enemies in that regard versus the Vex/Hive/Taken. They have more tangible goals than the more esoteric goals of the Vex and Hive.
It’s nice to have some Elites and Brutes to fall back on so we don’t get too bogged down on with a mystical version of the Flood and time-traveling Daleks.
The thing is, and always has been, the Fallen should be incredibly compelling. They're the remains of a society that was built on the Traveler's power that got completely screwed when the Traveler up and left, For Some Reason, and now they're trying to pick up the pieces and get the Traveler back and there could be some incredibly interesting stories in there if SOMEONE WOULD WRITE THEM INTO THE GAME GODDAMIT.
Yeah, conflict between Houses (Variks v Eramis v Mithrax v Spider v Fanatic) could all be rather compelling. Each group responding differently to the ruin of their people and trying to find a different resolution to the loss of the Traveler.
But it is easier to just like stick to each enemy group as a single faction rather than multiple. People were confused about even Hive factions and I know older players who never heard of Savathun. I imagine all non-Variks Fallen are basically just random letters to most players since trying to set up long-term enemy plotlines seems to fail (again except Savathun and that basically took much of this year).
Reading the lore, I’d love if they made more of an effort distinguishing factions. Mix up the Fallen colors like it’s supposed to be, make in game references which House is moving on which location.
Don’t need to be porcupines like Spider’s crew but just a little more effort.
Yeaaaaaah, Worldline Zero masterworked. Still hoping I can score the Positive Infinity before the prize-Engram changes it's contents but I'm glad I could get this done. It'd be nice if I could get Sleeper Stimulant's catalyst but you have to run a hard mode version of a raid for that, correct?

I don't agree. They are compelling as a side-story but they are not compelling as big villains. All the things that make them interesting and more nuanced or pitiable or tragic make them not work as well as an existential threat. They just aren't on that level. They are small time.
The direction they seem to be going with Beyond Light, where in their desperation they turn to greater darker powers, is about the only way to mesh those two and even then I think there's a limit to how big a threat they can end up being.
You can tell interesting stories with them but just not the kind that anchor big raids or the like.

I think Peen pointedly didn't refer to them as compelling villains. They're not compelling villains, but they are compelling in other ways that Destiny doesn't take as much advantage of as it should.

They did that in D1 but they dropped it in D2. I'm not sure we know why.
Maybe an issue of art assets? They've actually had to go and explain away why the House of Dusk appears in the time travel sections from Season of Dawn. Which makes me think if they could change the art assets easily they would have, so it's probably at least some level of cost savings measure right now. It's honestly so weird because palette swaps are an MMO staple and for a reason. They allow you to easily diversify the enemy without having to make as many new models.
I personally think the origin of it might be the attempt to just dumb everything down for Destiny 2 release. It’s the prestige of Spire of Stars to get it, yes, but it’s from *any* chest drop in the raid. I got mine from one of the ones in the jumping puzzle area if I’m remembering correctly. You can usually find groups on the Bungie LFG just doing catalyst runs of the parts leading up to the boss.
If you do end up trying to get it, you have 9 runs worth of chances left before the rotation, as you only get one shot per chest per character (the catalysts don’t abide by the same repeat drop rules as weapons/armor). Also, the completion of the catalyst requires a 5-chest and oracle puzzle run of the whisper mission. This is after the 2k kills with the ikelos SMG, and the 1k kills with the shotty/sniper equipped (can be any weapon, just need those on)
This is the last possible week to be able to start working on the whisper or outbreak catalysts and still be able to complete them.
Outbreak you’ll be required to do the puzzle in addition to hard mode
Whisper you have to hit all 5 chests and kill the bosses at the end. You’ll also need at least one heroic completion just to get the chests to show up.
Whisper without the catalyst is not super competitive on the raid dps front, so I suggest completing that one of you haven’t already. Outbreak’s is good too, but that mission is significantly more time consuming and difficult than whispers.

Love to get Whisper but I'd need help going through that dungeon in time. Which class has it easier when it comes to all the platforming there?

Someone went and uploaded photos of the pages from the Beyond Light CE-booklet. If you wanna check it out and perhaps get a little spoilering done, go here.
Bungie's also starting a new ARG. Site's up for it but things won't kick off until November 5th.

Titan + Lion Rampart.
If you go this route, make sure you have catapult lift selected. Normally catapult trades the long Jetpack time for the huge initial burst, ramparts gives you all the backend burn time back.
Top Dawnblade Warlock does pretty well too, with the air dash and super air dash to save it.
Make sure you have a sword too, actually good for the dps and jumping puzzles.
People (besides me, but also me) have written a lot of head canon and speculation about how we'd end up allied with the Fallen and how they could add playable Fallen characters in both PVE and PVP and how it would be a cool story direction and also a way to change the gameplay up without needing to add new elements for subclasses and some of those ideas were pretty good but a certain developer whose name rhymes with grungy somehow hasn't done any of it!
If it hadn't been cemented before, one can certainly say now that Clovis Bray's a villain. One does not respond to accusations of trying to genetically enslave your kid with "I didn't but damn I wish I thought of that!" if you're a good person.
I thought the story trailer was kinda lackluster, I hope they're holding a lot back and it isn't as monster of the week as it looks. New variation of enemy faction created when they encounter mysterious new power is pretty low effort at this point
dodgeblan's list of things they want to see
Hopefully the Deep Stone Crypt is better integrated with the overall story than garden of salvation was
Variks betrays you and was actually in charge of the Fallen the whole time
the pyramid needs to actually Do Stuff instead of being menacing geometric object that gives you new abilities
The Stranger being from a timeline where the darkness won? seems pretty cool, hope they do something with that

I am expecting that:
Variks is the planetary vendor for Europa like Eris was for the Moon. How this will square with his actions in Forsaken lore wherein he directly sets in motion Cayde's death is, uh, gonna be interesting to see.

According to the Stolen Intelligence book...
...the Awoken 'monarchy' (whoever that happens to be since Uldren's technically dead and Mara's doing who knows what) want Varkis first. To the point that they told the Guardians to not touch him or else it's war. My general reaction to that is...
...and put Varkis in a non-lethal timeout regardless.

Not every enemy faction needs to be some paracausal bullshit. The Fallen are a great enemy faction because they’re what humanity could have become.
Edit: I don’t have an argument for the Cabal. They really are the Brutes of Destiny.
I tried for a while to Solo Flawless Pit, but I suck at the Ogre maze and never got past it. With the Barrier mods leaving, it makes me less likely to try it, but I think I've accepted that said level of play isn't for me (my stubbornness to only Titan may not help). But it is always awesome to see the folks who can pull it off.
I will cherish my Solo Shattered Throne (oh god not even close to Flawless), though!
I think the thing I'm most disappointed in for year 3 was only one Raid. Garden is fun, but more would have been nice. And Pit and Prophecy are both good times, but not replacements for the full six-Guardian experience.
Also, holy fuck this Clovis Bray book from the Collector's Edition (just reading scans)
"I died. What a nuissance."
What a hilarious contemptable human Clovis is. Just like I hoped he would be.
The main thing it confused me on is whether Elsie Bray and Elizabeth Bray are the same person. I'm pretty sure that's the implication but I'm not 100% certain.
Clovis sounds like a fucking monster reading this. Hello to Destiny's Dr. Halsey. The CE book sort of ends abruptly, I assume the rest of the lore will filter out in game. Sort of frustrating though.

If you see the pictures of the actual book it ends with a torn page, like it's just the first chunk of a book ripped out of the rest. Presumably the rest is for us to discover on Europa.
There's also a letter from the Exo Stranger in there with more about Europa right now. It's written as an assessment by a vanguard agent on the Awoken interdiction of the planet. (apparently they had an interdiction on a bunch of Jupiter's moons, including Enceladus and I think even Titan)

Well shit, Fallout raises some concerns about hording bounties tied to typical Powerful rewards drops as part of Beyond Light prep... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU-F__Ccxpw
Guess maybe I'll opt for only the EDZ/Nessus bounties since I'd likely fuck up the trick for Vanguard and Moon bounties. And probably eat the ones I've already been saving....
I like to power level, but I also like to enjoy the new stuff without thinking too much housekeeping, so I've never hoarded bounties. I don't think it gives a big enough reward to make it worth the hassle.
But I also play so much in week 1 that a full page of saved bounties would end up as 1% of total XP that I earn.
Destiny community: WE NEED TO HOARD SO WE CAN LEVEL FASTER!
Also Destiny community: WE RAN OUT OF THINGS TO DO!
I wouldn't equate "leveling" to actual content.
I think it’s more the fact that if your quest log is full of completed bounties 3 weeks before the new season launches, you can’t pick up any more bounties to actually do in the meantime.
I’ll stack bounties, but only from the week before, and only until I get bored.
It’s normally enough to get the first 10 levels of the new reward track.
Talking of reward tracks - I don’t think I’ll get the next season. I’ll have enough new stuff to do, and since each season tends to be ‘go repeat this stuff 4 times a week’ I can’t be bothered. I’ll have enough games to play without stretching out my Destiny 2 playtime.
