Not a minority at all, vast majority in this thread loved it. We just killed the part of our brains where it loved by following it immediately with a season of Discovery.

It's exactly what I want in a "side story" star trek show.

How exactly do you mean "no one is talking about it"? This thread has 5-ish pages of posts just in the last month, and its not even currently releasing new episodes!

most of us loved it, it's just been off the air for a few months now so not a lot to talk about

I also think there's not much to talk about. It's inherently a comedy show, and doesn't try to go philosophic.

That said, I do think it's interesting that it's the comedy shows (and yes, I include The Orville) that seem more willing to embrace and reference the franchise's past, while the Serious Dramas seem intent on doing their own thing (and breaking with the past, constantly raising the stakes, etc etc).

Picard referenced a ton of the past, though!

That one was just a random "suggested" page on my FB newsfeed.

I'm just happy FB finally got the hint and stopped suggesting me alt-right hate-fueled pages.

Yeah one of the rare good things about facebook, it does seem to have a healthy outgrowth of Star Trek memes.

I've been doing a big Star Trek marathon with a family member and it's been fun

"The Drumhead" hit me harder than I was expecting. Just in tears for most of it

And Star Trek VI is still the best Star Trek movie

Also I'm very happy that the version of Star Trek VI we watched (the theatrical version) cut out the bit with the mask at the end. The scene is derisively called the "Scooby Doo reveal", which I think is a big insult...to Scooby Doo. The reveals at the end of Scooby Doo episodes are always carefully set up and follow naturally from the plot and the characters. Meanwhile, the reveal that the random Klingon assassin is actually a random Romulan is pointless and confusing. Why would they send a Romulan disguised as a Klingon when actual Klingons are in on the plot?

because you're misremembering. the assassin is actually Col West, from earlier in the movie, not a rando romulan, and it's because the faction of the federation and the faction of the klingons were working together to try to tank the peace talks so war could keep going on forever because yay war economy

it's actually great and sucks it was cut

It's dumber than "because war economy" since the federation has no war economy, iirc it was "humans and Klingons mistrust and hate each other so much they formed an alliance in order to prevent an alliance between humans and kilingons.

  • HydropoloHydropolo Registered User regular
It's not war economy, it's people who only know war and fear a world that no longer has need of people like them. There is a reason it was a parable for the end of the cold war.

Honestly if they'd tossed Neelix out the minute they should have (some time after the "intestinal distress" joke in episode 2 and before the hot tar in Janeway's coffee cup in episode 3 or 4) it would never have been a problem. I'm sure cooking is one of Tom Paris's many skills and interests.

war economy was a dumb simplification. it's military personal who want their jobs to keep on existing, etc etc

Why ask Paris when you can demote Kim to sous-chef and give him the responsibility of a chef ?

Also, airlocking Neelix would be littering. Neelixes should be disposed of properly: through matter-antimatter interaction, followed by flying the ship into a black hole.

They did end up inside a black hole early on. And they had Neelix's ship sitting useless in the repair bay the whole series.

I feel like NASA should start selling Gravimetric Schmear... Maybe a combination with a coffee and bagel company? Get your Cosmic Foam and Bagel with Gravimetric Schmear.

I doubt it would be a good idea. I have seen what's considered a bagel in most of the US. Calling those things the Neelix of bagels would be an insult to Neelix.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparative_advantage Everyone else on the ship is a better cook than Neelix, but the opportunity cost of cooking instead of doing their highly trained jobs is very high. Meanwhile Neelix is completely useless, therefore it's a gain to have him cool poorly.

if you do step 2 with Neelix and then flush the older Neelix out of the air lock you can loop the process indefinitely to produce thrust.
I call it the Infinite Justice Drive.

Seems they would have been better served by trading Neelix away for a tanker that could keep pace with them so they didn't have to worry about energy reserves.
