I really liked the FF8 universe, it made me feel joy, I loved the whole atmosphere.

Squall is a douche though, Laguna was so much more awesome.

I loved FF8 as well. I dunno why, there is nothing really that great about it, I just like it a lot.

8 kinda blew. I'm currently replaying to reevaluate its suck-ocity. I don't think I gave it a 100% fair fight after FF7. As much as people complain about the fanboys that game was damn good. 6 has to be the best of the numbered though. The game had 16 characters, each I cared more about than some later FF characters. Tactics was great, anyone who hasn't played should pick up a copy. It's like 20 bucks for the greatest hits edition.

Eh... I played FF8 right after I beat FF7. I was WAY more impressed with FF8 then FF7. But if I had to choose between one for it's gameplay, I would go with 7, if I had to choose one "just because" FF8 would win way far.

Lots of people say like FF6 and the older ones have really good stories, but the whole 2D thing has always turned me off. I've liked a couple 2D RPGs, most notably Golden Sun, but FF has always been about the visuals for me since I played FF9.

I played FF7 much later than any other game...I only got to the second disk, but I've read the story, and it seems like it's following the same storyline the whole time more than 9 or 10 which are all over the place.

I loved Crystal Chronicles. So fun.

    What is it with FF8?

It does not do anything spectacularly better than any other Final Fantasy.

Yet every time I see it there is a sense of great joy and fond memories appear in droves.

Maybe I should play 8. I only played long enough to get out of the city thing. The graphics drove me insane, and I think I had just beat 9 and I didn't like the way the summon thing worked so I just stopped.

FF8's fucking trash. The storyline was boring even by predictable save-the-world-and-fall-in-love FF standards. The Guardian Force system was just poorly-designed. The Draw system was punishing in its tedium. It was just a horrible game. Not even "a subpar FF game," just a bad game on its own.

My favorite is FF6. I played FF1 when it was about a year old. I played FF4 next, under the US "FF2" title. When FF6 came out, I played that. It was probably out for a year or so before I played it, though.

Total goddamn lie. My first was Mystic Quest. I think I threw up after playing it.

Also, I never really liked the card games in 8 or 9. Like, I would start the game and be all into collecting them and what not, and then realize that I'm trying to save the world from some cataclysmic destruction and realize that a card game doesn't matter.

Thief's story is sooooo awesome. FFT's story too, of course.

I've played, like, the Thief 3 demo I think. Always been a series I've wanted to play more seriously.

Seriously: Play FROM THE BEGINNING. I don't care how hard it is, get a copy of Thief: The Dark Project or the "director's cut" version, Thief: Gold. (The Gold version has three extra missions and some other minor changes.) After that, Thief 2: The Metal Age. Then Thief 3. You'll find that Deadly Shadows (Thief 3) isn't as good, gameplay-wise, but it does look a lot better and the story is just as good. Also, it contains THE single best video game level I've ever seen in any game.

Anyway, the story in Thief is excellent, the world is thoroughly fleshed out to the point where it feels real in its depth and complexity, and the entire arc was designed very clearly to be a trilogy. Another really neat thing about the story is that it's not force-fed to you. Obviously, the major plot elements happen in sequence and there are cutscenes between missions and all that, but the major elements are just one storyline. There are dozens of smaller storylines in each game, even little mysteries you can piece together from clues collected in different missions. Because they don't affect the gameplay, they make the world feel more real; they only exist to add to the immersion.

As a quick example, on the first mission, you'll break into a nobleman's mansion to steal an antique for one of your black-market contacts. If you root around in the back areas of the mansion, you'll find the nobleman's accountant's desk and you can read his logbook. Keep looking and you can find evidence that the master of the house knows that the accountant's been doing some funny shit with the books. You can also find out that the nobleman apparently has some kind of deal going with a local crime boss involving illegal gambling operations. In a later mission, you'll find yourself in that crime boss' house, and you can see the other side of the story in there. Little connections like that that don't affect the overall storyline are what make this game so cool. There's much more going on in the world than what your character is directly interested in knowing; it's not like a normal game where your character is constantly involved in the most important shit ever, like saving the world from Metal Gear or Kefka or Lavos. Through most of the game, your character is motivated not by world-shaking goals, but by things like paying off his landlord, blackmailing the sheriff to get the cops off his ass, or busting his contacts out of prison so he can cash in on the shit he stole that can't just be offloaded to any old pawn shop.

    Gay innuendo ftw?

Then just make a sword. And have the guy using the sword not a complete dick like Squall. Then FF8 would be more tolerable. Also, Selphie would have to be removed completely. And the junction system would need an overhaul. And GF system. See why I'm not happy with this game?
