All joking aside, I'm glad to not have that level (twitter)of other people knowing that I am a real person who exists. I'm already overexposed just here, but I've been here so long it's kind of like, damage done, you know?

Imagine living through the events of the year 2020 and having the spare mental bandwidth to get angry about internet witches putting curses on the moon

If you’re getting mad at moon hexes you’re not worrying about various crushing things to worry about.

I assure you, I can get mad at plenty more things while also maintaining my many crippling anxieties for which medication can only help so much

According to Majora's Mask, moon hexes can be very crushing indeed!

I tried real hard to get into Wicca when I was a teen, but I'm too cynical. Turns out wanting to believe in rad nature magic spiritual bullshit doesn't make it happen. The same thing happened with Christianity a few years earlier.

The moon hex seems like a story someone made up and which (witch?) gained traction

When I was a teenager, there was a rumor that the government was building "a Cerebro" by the half-pipe

I think that's the one people are most optimistic about; they also started preparing for mass production of it presuming it works, for a Fall 2020 rollout in the UK

No idea how long it would take to produce for other countries, mind

I would hope the Oxford folks are, as an institution also slightly less vulnerable to an attempted American industrial capture, like we've already seen the current federal government attempt against private international companies

From what I've heard in Discord, Oxford isn't even really beholden to abide by many demands from anyone and are fairly likely to share everything they have with other researchers. Which should be what any of these establishments do with all breakthroughs. Treat it like a github to save humanity.

So obviously not on this scale, but it's really pretty wild to have seen from close up the split between the researchers who go "I have poured my life into this to make the world better, I'm going to do x and y so it stays in my name so I can give it away so no one can snap it up to profit from it before it can go generic" vs the (also pretty human and reasonable reaction) to be more like Bilbo. "I have poured my life into this, why shouldn't I profit? After all, I did make it, why shouldn't the rewards be mine?"

It's an everywhere thing, but working conditions in a lot of biomed research are also terrible, which makes the latter all the more appealing and seemingly justified once you get there. It's hard to overstate how much of a sprint these vaccine efforts have been. A sprint made all the more exhausting by everyone knowing what corners they had to cut to do it faster, this won't be anyone's ideal science because there is an obvious need to go with "good enough" vs "well let's test one more thing to see if it helps (which is never JUST one more).

LA is on the verge of another shutdown, I hear. Since the only thing I've done in the last 4 months is go get groceries, I guess I won't really notice the difference.

I did apply for a weekend position at my old job, just so I have something, anything to do on Saturdays/Sundays.

Quarantine thread, I just finished my first major quarantine project - a Smart Mirror!

    The mirror is able to:
    - show the date, time, and weather forecast
    - show my upcoming calendar events
    - Link to my Todoist account to show tasks in order of priority for the day
    - Show headlines from the CBC
    - Show drink recipes, movie listings, and upcoming events
    - Tell me the length of my commute and show a map with Google Traffic results
    - Show hockey schedules if the NHL ever plays again
    - Display ongoing Spotify music and album art
    - Display the status of Philips Hue smart light rooms
    - Screencast direct from YouTube
    - Use an inbuilt Google Assistant to answer questions or show videos when I say "Jarvis "
    - Turn the screen on or off when a PIR sensor detects movement (e.g. entering the room turns the screen on)
    - Transition between screens when I move my hand in certain directions in front of a hidden gesture sensor under the desk
    - Reflect my face and surroundings on the surface

    How I did the build:

I decided I wanted to retrofit it onto a JYSK vanity I had just bought, so I tossed out the original mirror after getting some measurements, got some mirrored acrylic (two way), and arranged with a laser cutter in town to get it done.

Mechanically, I tore a monitor to pieces (literally, I had to use snips for one circuit board which was glued into the bezel) and then made a very shitty prototype with electrical tape and construction paper to see how the light worked/if refraction was a concern, do initial programming, make sure I didn't need any intense mounting systems, etc. Then I designed a laser cut mounting plate that matched the laser cut mirrored acrylic I'd commissioned on the front, as well as little mounting boxes for the display boards. The mounting plate is two layers of 1/8in MDF, one cut with a rectangle the size of the monitor, and the other a solid back with a cutout for the display ribbon cable. The back needed to be solid with consistent pressure to block out light, press the display flush to the acrylic to reduce refraction, and not cause warping in the thin acrylic.

I mounted sensors with velcro for testing and then more securely with 3M tape and cable clips (though I am leaving the PIR velcroed to future proof against any future moves.) Tied up all the cables on the back and added a surge protector to clear up the cable mess. Last, I threw a Philips Hue Strip on to get the cool glow.

The software itself is an open source API called MagicMirror2. Third party modules can be customized to fit your requirements, but it does take some basic understanding of Python and programming in general to get it all to work together. It took me about a week to get the modules customized where I wanted them and totally functional (since many were developed and ditched with no support by their makers, so sometimes there was some real troubleshooting to do.)

If I did this again I'd take more care to select a monitor with truer black shades - the monitor does glow a bit when it's on and dark, and you can't really hide that given I went with a curved glass and not a rectangular one designed to fit. But otherwise I am really, really happy with how this turned out!

I wanted to make one of these since my last job essentially taught me how by paying me to make them, and I've finally had the money and time to get it done. Feels good!

    That's rad! Questions:

    1. Since you're living in the future, why did you choose to post this in 2020? Is this some kind of sick disaster tourism to you?
    2. Who is the fairest one of all? Is it me? It's probably Paul Rudd, isn't it?

Edit: 3. Since KetBra is apparently also living far enough in the future to steal my rad joke, why did you choose to steal my rad joke in 2002? Is this some kind of sick disaster tourism to you?
