If youre far from people it legit doesn’t matter but I’ve found there’s a lot of variance in cultural expectations and norms. My sister in Australia laughs at the idea of anyone wearing a mask while cycling, but where I live masking up while cycling, hiking, or doing anything at all really outside your house, has been the norm since about April. I think only part of it is about safety - some of it, like b-0 says, is about just not having to fuck around if you round a corner and suddenly find yourself on top of people. And part of it is cultural signaling - it’s a visual indication that ‘yes I’m taking this seriously and I care about community safety and you can be reasonably confident I’m not gonna be an utter dickhead at you for no reason’.
if it doesn't bother you to keep it on, it saves you the trouble of fumbling with it when you pass people.
Yeah i live in a mask required zone so I've just gotten used to wearing a mask all the time, it's started to feel weird to be maskless outside.

And even if it's not actively protecting anyone, it normalizes mask wearing and communicates that someone in your neighborhood is serious about fighting a pandemic that a distressing number of people don't really believe in.

I also have the unique knowledge that I have been self-quarantining for 6 months and only go to the grocery store every 3 weeks, so I have human contact for about one hour every 21 days. But I think, maybe that's not the point. Maybe the whole point of it is if people see others not wearing masks, that idea proliferates ad infinitum.
wearing a mask all the time can also get random people to shout "jesus loves you" and "'masks don't work outside'" at you when they stop at an intersection near you
and then you get to flip them off as they drive away and shout insults at them...
The politics of my area are such that you're much more likely to get verbally harassed and harangued for not wearing a mask. Although generally it's more of a "glare and a cross to the other side of the street" situation.

Good god I wish the Valley were this way. Unfortunately people here are much more like Kadith's townsfolk. =/
I literally had some old guy, mask down around his chin, mask-free grandkids running around like banshees, reach into my goddamn grocery cart and start touching all of my stuff. Started asking me, "Oh hey, are you looking to do a bit of a barbeque? Man..." before I cut him off, told him to fuck off with touching my shit, holy fuck old guy you aren't wearing a mask, please go away. So he scootered off, telling me that I'm an asshole and how he doesn't need to wear a mask because, "I was just in the hospital for something else, and anyway masks don't protect you."
I swear to everything, if I'm still stuck in this town in five years I'm just done. There's no point to living here, it's literally being run by a the cult of plague, death, and racism.

Masks are a put them on before you leave the house and don't take them off until you're back inside situation for me
But I live in an area populous enough that I will be coming within six feet of someone else within a block, and I wear masks that tie behind the head rather than simple ear loops, which are both (in my experience) more comfortable and more time consuming to repeatedly don and doff as I approach people
I haven't needed to wear a mask in the suburbs because when I walk my dog I maybe see one or two people every kilometer at best, so it's pretty easy to just cross the road or make distance instead
People out here have been good about wearing masks but I see a lot of people jogging or riding bikes without them. I get that it's hot and they're getting all sweaty, but if you're breathing like a bellows isn't that a good reason to keep it on and wash it later?
Damn, my 2 year old niece tested positive for Coronavirus a couple of weeks ago, she was sick for a couple of days but has seemed fine since. Tonight my sister said my niece was breathing hard, I suggested she call the nurse line and they asked her to go to the children’s hospital. My niece vomited on the way there and they’re waiting on chest x-rays now.
I realized I used pronouns confusingly; my sister is fine, it’s my niece in the hospital. I really hope it’s a coincidence/unrelated and not a relapse from Coronavirus.
My sister also lives with us, and her boyfriend decided to isolate in our covid bubble instead of his side of the family (who are all very nice, but it's also bigger and easier to isolate from them since he doesn't live there)
Anyway, it's a good thing he only attended our Thanksgiving, because his sister and brother-in-law both just tested positive
Hoping it all turns out, but also kinda relieved that he kept to good bubble protocol and it didn't spread between households at least
oh well shit. in that case i hope your niece comes out okay, and there are plenty of situations where kids are actually much more resilient than adults so I've got every confidence she'll be fine

Should I be concerned that I still haven't received my test results? They said at the site 24 hours. It is now past 72 hours.

I'm sure it's stressing you out, but a lot of labs really slow down on weekends. The lab at the hospital where I work certainly does.
I'm not stressed because I'm 99% sure I'm fine as I had to get a test as a requirement from the district for all high school staff to get one before students return Monday.

Same here, in Denmark. Luckily the rabid anti-mask thing is very limited. We have morons who have to do a rebel without a clue thing on trains/buses, but most people are pretty decent about it.
The general vibe is ''this is fucking annoying, but we're in it together, so let's just do it''. Which is about as good as it gets here.
I did have an unpleasant experience when a guy just snapped in a supermarket the other day and went off on a women who was wearing a mask (not required, most don't) while standing in the queue. He got, like, in her face and started screaming about how masks were 'something something' and started clawing at her face to remove the mask.
That was completely out of the norm though, and I doubt I'll see anything like it again.

Yeah the vast majority in Ottawa have been very good about it since our mandatory mask mandate came into effect
There have been a few incidents in stores where people have been performatively maskless and it has been irritating that the police haven't actually followed through with charges on one or two of them (especially a recent one where two guys blocked the exit of an Asian grocery downtown and yelled about the pandemic being fake, etc)
Overall people have been great about it since, though; it isn't really politicized here, thankfully, aside from the few conspiracy folks

My baby nephew has a cold and just like last time he had a cold it's fucking with his breathing. He's wheezy and making this like gulping/coughing sound when he exhales. I wonder if he might have mild asthma. Doctors gave him an inhaler last time which his parents have been giving him and he hates it and screams. Holy crap is it stressful when a tiny small person is ill and you know he's probably fine but also what if he's just going to up and die because he's so small, how can anything that small cope with any kind of difficulty.
Anyway I'm not getting much sleep tonight. I would get up and do some gardening if doing it in the dark wouldn't make me look like a psychopath

I'm still not following "lawn hoover". I know what a lawn is, and I know "hoover" is vacuuming, but vacuuming a lawn would instantly fill a vacuum with dirt and fuck it up.
Well, "vacuum" in that its basically a big bag with a chute connected to the mower deck and the clippings and leaves are more or less caught by the bag instead of being shot onto the lawn.

Maybe it's code.
Maybe she sucks the dick of a satyr to ensure a good lawn.

She's pretty mental and really lovely. Works in IT and also models clothes of the cybergoth/industrial goth type
Quite the individual
Excuse me, why not use a broom and dustpan like a normal person? Or if you really feel like an overachiever you can mop your lawn.
Hoovering it though? Who does that?
I’ll hoover the shit out of it and not even think twice about it.
So, a lawnmower?
