Been listening to Black Sabbath's Ozzy Meets the Priest, a bootleg of one of their 1992 shows supporting Ozzy Osbourne at what were supposed to be his farewell shows in Costa Mesa, California; Ronnie James Dio, then on his second stint fronting Sabbath following the Dehumanizer album, had refused to do the shows and left, being subsequently replaced at short notice for the two shows by Sabbath's old mate Rob Halford. Halford's voice definitely seems to suit the Dio-era songs in the set better. I wonder if his excitement was getting the better of him or something, sometimes he sounds like he's trying a tad too hard, especially on the Ozzy-era songs. But it's an interesting historical curio.

It's also bolstered by a few tracks performed at the end of Ozzy's set, when he and Sabbath shared the stage for a four-song mini-reunion. (I'm sure some there guessed that this would happen as Sabbath had left a few staple Ozzy-era songs out of their set.) The energy palpably crackles on this bit; really it's no surprise after listening to this that they eventually reunited full-time, the only surprise is that it took so long. (Although, if it had, we wouldn't have got Cross Purposes, and I rather like that album.)

Incredible. Generally more like their old stuff but still with some of the fresh creativity of their later albums.

New Undeath, Demonical, Pallbearer and Armored Saint too.

Nice. Also, looks like it's part of an EP they're putting out in December which will include those other singles they've put out since their last album.

Undeath continues to rule, and "Archfiend Coercion Methods" is just such a great song title. I'm also partial to "Phantasmal Festering" and "Kicked in the Protruding Guts".

@autothrall, is your intention to keep those yearly lists you just worked on up-to-date? I don't want to bug you (like: auto, add a review link for and move up Bark at the Moon) if you're thinking about updating them periodically instead.

Architects kinda drop the whole metalcore thing on their new one. Kind of a sludgy industrial sound going on here.

The new Draconian album is decent if you're still into the whole beauty/beast Gothic Doom era. Also I've given the new Carcass EP a few spins and it's not that bad, I know a lot of folks are divisive about it. It's catchy enough.

Still checking out the new releases from Hypnos (the death metal one) and Svartsyn. To say nothing of the new Grafvitnir,Stalker and THEM.

And just got the CD/T-Shirt bundle for that one, it's dope.

Got an email via bandcamp from a band called Unto Others about leftover merch and I was scratching my head. I visited their link and apparently a month ago Idle Hands changed their name, presumably because of some trademark on the original name.

Picked up some albums by bands I never really tried to get into when I was younger recently:

Metal Church - The Human Factor - Pretty sure this was the album they were promoting when I saw a video by them on MTV back when I was first getting into metal, but it did nothing for me back then. This seems good, though! At first I thought the vocalist was doing a Dave Mustaine impression, but he quickly moves into his own style after the first verse or two. I know he's their second vocalist and the first one was a bit higher pitched; I'll probably pick up an album from that era eventually. I listened to some of The Dark on youtube recently.

Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver - I know I saw a few videos of theirs on MTV back in the day too and it never really connected with me back then, but I think I like it now. I actually saw them live in 1995 when they opened for Megadeth, but they were boring to me then.

Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian - Verdict's still out on this one for me. I know it's considered one of their best.

Also picked up 2wo's Voyeurs, which is Rob Halford's industrial metal thing he did after Fight. Eh. Kind of a fun novelty.

Awaken the Guardian is amazing, but The Spectre Within is my fave from Fates.

With Metal Church the s/t and The Dark are my go-tos! If you end up liking any of the Mike Howe fronted Metal Church records after that then definitely check out Breaking Point by Heretic, which is awesome power/thrash metal, and ironically David Wayne of Metal Church would form Reverend with the other members of Heretic when Mike Howe took his place there. The first Revered EP is killer too (at least the songs are, if not the mix). Also a power/thrash hybrid.

No Place for Disgrace is my fave Flotsam but the production doesn't hold up so well (and the re-recording doesn't work any better sadly).

Oh yeah. I did a 3 hour "masterclass" with him at a Guitar Center opening years ago. He's the best teacher I've ever had an actual session with at explaining high level theory to people raised on tab by showing it to them on the fretboard and not patronizing or talking down to them.

And seeing his picking up close was like staring into the sun. I also felt exceptionally proud of myself for doing a couple of sweep exercises a touch cleaner than him, course he was using his left hand.
