I played a game exclusively with the d-pad recently!
I cant remember which one!
Edit: It was Pac-man championship edition 2!
IS there a preferred PC controller? I have a 360 wireless with working USB adapter, a dualshock 4, a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, and a couple Steam Controllers. Oh, and a pair of the 8bitdo SNES looking things for Switch with pro controller stuff minus the HD rumble I guess. Which should I PC Game with, or is there a better option?
Xbox One controller / 360 controller have the most universal support. Can't go wrong getting one of those. The Series X controller coming out later this year should be in the same boat since it's basically the same (except with a share button and slightly adjusted ergonomics). Steam's controller interface means most other controllers fit the bill, though. The touchpad and gyro in the PS4 controller can be used, too, if you go to the effort of setting them up for games.
I dunno, personally I think the Xbox One controller is the best, most ergonomic controller I've ever used. I'll get a Series X controller, too, just because I wanna see how the new ergonomics feel. And maybe an Elite controller down the line when I'm flush with cash.
Do they even make any of the XBox controllers wired anymore? I was looking at them and could only find Bluetooth, but would greatly prefer USB.
The bluetooth Xbox One controller will communicate via the USB cable if you connect it that way. I was looking that up earlier this morning.

I ended up having to get the dongle for mine, though, because the micro-USB connection got very finicky with staying connected unless I held the controller in a very specific position and distance from my PC.
I want to mention that although the XBone controller is sort of the universal standard now, the Dual Shock 4 has a front trackpad that functions as a mouse when it's plugged in to your PC.
This can be really handy if you're playing an older game that only has "partial" controller support (but still needs a mouse for menus or whatever).

Why not just use the mouse in conjunction with the game pad?

Sometimes the mouse is allllllllllllllll the way over there.
As part of the great and accidental Steam library purge of 2020, I reinstalled only 3 games. Yesterday I completed CSD3?! and today I got my first victory in Monster Train. The Hellhorned (I think that's what the standard red demon clan is called anyhow) are pretty cool - particularly when you spec into rage and find an artifact that makes it not degrade.
Very cool game, and I can see myself losing many, many hours to it.
I'll throw my recommendation in for the switch pro controller, especially if you're looking for a better dpad. I randomly found out that it would work from a Halo 3 review on the steam store, tried it out in H3 multiplayer and actually did well (playing Halo 3 on PC with a Nintendo controller, 2020 is weird). From there I've tried a couple other games and it makes a great alternative to a 360 or XBONE controller.
The switch pro controller does not have a good dpad, like at all.
I never said it was good, but it's worked fine for me, but please don't tell me you are trying to say that the Xbox controller has a better one?
But yes, the controller as a whole is really good.
No, the xbox 360 dpad is awful too.
The problem with the switch pro dpad is that it is far to easy to get an extra adjacent input (like getting up or down when you press left). Otherwise it is a great controller for ergonomics and battery life. I would recommend it for everything except if you are using it in a dpad focused game.

Over there with the balls.
I don't know about third party controllers, but I managed to bind some controls on the Steam controller and play CNS2018 with that and a wireless mouse. Works a treat.
But I'd never try and rely on the track pads. RLM was right. It doean't really do enough to replace either because it doesn't do anything well enough. It's trying to be all things and it can't come close. I don't regret it, but I'd prefer to natively bind controls on third party controllers.
The wife has gotten some interest from Valve for a job. Very early stages, so we aren't expecting anything to come of it.
BUT.....if she does get the job, I'm pretty sure she can hit a button and unlock all the games on Steam to someone's account*. I'll be getting one of you!
* please note that this is false and not possible.

CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.

And not in the loose modern vernacular definition of "literally." It's Diablo 1 pushed into a press that turned skills and equipment into cards. You select between a white male warrior, white female archer, and black male magic user. You identify enchanted cards by taking them to a rambling old man standing by the fountain in town. The first strata of dungeon you venture into is a haunted cathedral with a food services themed demon as a boss.
It's an entertaining time and well worth the price of $1.
I'm fondly reminded of a time before Diablo 3's writing happened. Also the rest of it, but mostly the writing.
Gosh, that was bad. It just got worse from start to finish. I hope the people responsible still feel bad and never stop feeling bad.
It was very nearly as bad as the writing in that last Red Faction game what wasn't about having a sledge hammer- thinking back to that makes me lose my will to live.
Genuinely the worst story I've ever suffered. It was so insultingly terrible that I will die cursing the plot.
I can't even hate the people responsible. All I have left is despair. Storytelling was a mistake.

Also just a reminder they're doing this exact same treatment to X-COM in Book of Aliens.
So I finally went and did something I've always been meaning to do, just because it looked kind of cool- I fired up my copy of AC: Odyssey, and took a few nights to do the educational tour. Honestly, there are worse ways to kill a few nights. It's actually not dry at all- granted, you do have to go around and find all the discovery points to see everything (and there are some seventy-six of the damn things in Attika- Athens and surrounding environs- alone). But at the same time, you can really gain an understanding of how much went into things back then.
I have to admit, my favorites were the guided tours, though- you walk from one point to another along a track and learn about things- and which are introduced and ended by several of the game's characters, speaking in-character. For example, Markos is the man to see about tours for how wine and dye were produced- and after each tour, there's an option to take a quick three-question quiz for fun- which they also answer, completely in character, and some of the wrong answers are still good for a chuckle.
In all honesty, though, it was nice to just explore and learn, for once.
Not Steam related, but apparently they're "end of life"-ing Forza Horizon 3, so if you want to pick up the DLC, now is the time.
This is the one with Hot Wheels DLC
Yes, this is the DLC I was looking at.
There are rumors they might be having some sort of sale between now and the middle of September when the licensed expire, so I guess you can wait a bit to see if that's true. Otherwise you have 44 days.
So I'm still without a Pc and the replacement power supply is in corona delivery limbo, but I'm here to tell ya'll to play Dreamscapers if you can handle early access games. Its a roguelike with really good writing (full disclosure I know the writer). I havent played the EA version since you know. The vile murder of my pc by the coward power supply, but the alpha demo that was put out during day of the devs, I think, was great and I enjoyed it a lot.

The game and DLC are on the best ever sale atm so I'd just pull the trigger tbh. It's weird playing it now after pouring so much wonderful time into FH4 - it's more stingy with cars and money than I recalled. FH4 drowns you in cash and cars while unlocking a new level of a horizon camp gives you a 20% discount for a small range of +$1m cars... not too tempting!

It's pretty lame that they're sunsetting the game when it's not even four years old yet.
I'm sure it's all wrapped up in some short sighted idea to only license the use of cars for four years coupled with manufacturers wanting too much mobey for the priviledge, but it still makes me not want to buy any Forza games knowing that major portions of the product have a fairly short expiration date.

Gee wiz, yes. I want this lady's trauma. She gets to fight whales and vandalize property. I usually use Bluetooth, but when the battery gets low and the controller tanks my FPS I hook it up till the batteries recharge.
