While giving a presentation in class last year, this one guy interrupts me with something about how there's no native Arabic word for "democracy", it's just "democracy" and that that somehow proves that democracy can't work with Arabs (and Muslims in general, I believe, was the point he was trying to make). Taken off guard I just mumbled something like "oh, okay . . . uh, that's an interesting point . . ."
Ten minutes later when I'm finished it hits me - "that fucker, English doesn't have a native word for democracy either".
