Go beyond sports movies and get into sports anime! You get strong character development, training arcs, game arcs, and tournament arcs! It's great!

Haikyuu's probably the best out there and is on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

Ping-Pong the Animation is also great, albiet a shorter and more focused show with some fantastic visuals and a really well done examination of hard work and effort, natural skill, and the implications of them.

Ok movie thread, here's something I've never seen brought up. I need a list of great sports movies. My gf hates sports, and I always try to show her the magic of them. There's great moments and inspirational stories. Like Rudy! I need some movies to show her. Right now I'm thinking

    Rudy
    The rocky series
Major league and maybe part 2
    Slapshot
    Bull durham
    Field of dreams

I'm trying to think of more and especially more emotional movies. I'm sure she'd enjoy any given sunday and the program, but I'm trying to look at movies that are more about the sport and inspiring, instead of the negative side of sports and side effects.

I wonder if she's ever seen the sandlot or mighty ducks, although I'm not sure those count.

Does it have to be a movie? Because Hajime No Ippo is good boxing shit but it’s no movie

Edit: also Creed is basically the best of all of these

    And Rudy is terrible

You sir, have no heart. Go and watch the grinch saves Christmas and have your heart grow 5 sizes

I'm afraid Tenet was wasted on me. It's definitely fine craftsmanship, but I found the story and characters to be hollow and unengaging, and IMO it's the worst-written Christopher Nolan film to date.

What am I missing about Rudy that makes it bad? It's a story of a walk on no talent normal person who makes it on notre dame back when they were good. He overcame all these odds and played in a game. What's bad about it?

It lionizes tribalistic sports culture and turns a story about a unqualified athlete with poor grades who only played about two minutes his whole career during times when it didn’t matter into a hagiography.

Also the real Rudy is a conman and grifter and a total piece of shit.

@RickRude Watch the new Kickboxer movies - Kickboxer: Vengeance and Kickboxer: Retaliation. Vengeance is a reboot that has Van Damme playing the old master who has to train someone out to avenge his brother, and Alain Moussi in JCVD's original role of Kurt Sloane. Alain Moussi is great, and they stack the cast with Dave Bautista as Tong Po in Vengeance and a ton of MMA folks like Georges St Pierre and Cain Velasquez among others. I streamed them for friends over the last couple of months and everyone loved them. Retaliation is its own thing that just follows on as a direct sequel from Vengeance.

They're both on Netflix and totally worth watching. Just go into the second one as blind as possible so you can be surprised by all of the changes to the cast. There will be some great "holy crap, he's in this?!" moments if you do.

Diggstown is more of a heist movie than a boxing movie, but it's still my favorite boxing movie.

But watching it involves supporting James Woods, which makes me feel uneasy these days.

Not only is it a great cheezy 80s monster mash that looks like a Sega Genesis game come to life but it's also an unofficial Babylon 5/Deep Space 9 crossover.

Jesus. I remember that movie. Because it came out while I worked at Blockbuster, and there was trivia on the trailer tapes played in store constantly about how they shot a scene where he catches a ball in reverse, including having him say his lines in reverse.

I said this before, but I feel the first time is just taking the ride, and understanding what is happening, and the second time you can focus more on the motivations of characters. Especially Neil's character gets way more interesting the second time around. Especially if you connect the dots.

I recall loving Best of Times when I was a kid, which stars Robin Williams as a guy who fucked up a key play in a football game in high school and has never lived it down, and Kurt Russell as the football star who had his promising career ended as a result. Williams tries to get together a redo of the critical game as an adult.

It's less a sports movie and more a sports adjacent movie, but it's fun and it has Kurt Fucking Russell in it.
