Dang, how does that list (of sequels better than the original) not have Ocean's 11? The remake is such a fantastic film and the original is a mostly forgettable film that's only really relevant because it was a rat pack thing.

So, my gf has never seen vanilla sky. How to describe it to her without giving anything away?
And is this a good movie? I remember liking it but I've only seen it once. Wondering if I should have her watch it or just tell her what it's about.

Last night we watched Ronin, the first time since seeing it at the cinema when it came out originally. It's definitely well-crafted, but like the first time I found myself caring very little about anything going on in the story. The characters are thin by design, and while I appreciate this over more dramatic but badly written characters, I found myself thinking I'd rather be watching Heat. Similarly, while the car chases are competent, I didn't find them particularly exciting, because I didn't much care about the outcomes. And the less said about the flimsy sort-of-romance between De Niro and McElhone, the better. (There's more chemistry between De Niro and Jean Reno.)
I like John Frankenheimer's films from 30-40 years earlier, but I'll take one of those over Ronin any time. I'm kinda sad that the film isn't doing much for me, because I seem to remember that people here like it quite a bit.
One thing I did like, though: watching an action film where pretty much all of the main characters are middle-aged and far from the buff Adonises you get in so many action movies.

I love that the briefcase in Ronin is one of the most MacGuffiny MacGuffins ever. It's never used like the Ark in Raiders, it's not even opened like the one in Pulp Fiction, and when De Niro's character asks for details about the only thing that McElhone commits to is that it probably isn't full of nitroglycerin. It limits the scope of the action and I found it kept me a bit more focused on the back and forth of trying to get the briefcase, instead of having to consider the ramifications of what would happen if the nuclear codes/bio weapon/risotto recipe ended up in the wrong hands.
Predator 2 does reference characters and events from the first movie. It's not a super tightly tied in sequel, but it's certainly closer to P1 than P3 and 4.
Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

I remember Law Abiding Citizen as "We really want you to root for this crazy revenge guy, but at the 11th hour, we had second thoughts."
Also, Soldier isn't a sequel to anything, it just mentions a couple Blade Runner things as an easter egg. But yeah, Halloween 3 was just "What is even going on here?" and while I heard Port of Call... was a decent enough flick, the decision to slap that name on there was utterly confusing to everyone, including the guy who directed the first one. I mean seriously, did Nic Cage even jack off on some teenagers in the so called sequel?!?!
Wound up going to the wikipedia just to flick through the Soldier entry and they even have a little Blade Runner blurb at the bottom:
"Soldier was written by David Peoples, who co-wrote the script for Blade Runner. Soldier is considered to be a "spin-off sidequel"-spiritual successor to Blade Runner, seeing both films as existing in a shared fictional universe."
Even though he co wrote the Blade Runner script, considering a shitty one off popcorn action flick like Soldier in anyway related feels pretty fucking ballsy.
Dude wrote Unforgiven as an original screenplay as well. Now that said, he had something to start with for Blade Runner, but Soldier was also an original screenplay. Also did Blood of Heroes which I remember being....terrible.
I don't remember Event Horizon being overly scary so much as it was gory? And they toned it down too. That said, I would have seen it in my 20s I think.

I always thought the "visions of hell" in the movie were remarkably well-done goresploitation, and apparently there was a lot more to it that got cut.

I remember watching it, being completely blown away/shocked by the chances it took with the budget and star power it had. And never watched it again. Is it a good movie? I can't tell you because I watched it like 20 years ago. Is it worth seeing once? Absolutely. I don't know how much context of when it dropped, matters to that film. Its just so weird.
It reminds me a bit about thrillers from that period. 13th floor Was pretty good. Completely had its lunch eaten because it released 2 months after the matrix, and look at the description: neo-noir science fiction crime thriller film. look at how this film got fucking advertised:
the tagline was 'question reality'
A crime worse than Armageddon and deep impact coming out in the same summer. Because noone remembers this movie. Noone was ever going to notice this movie.
The Game with Douglas in it really gets re-contextualized pretty hard into 'eat the fucking rich' with how that ending goes, and everything that clearly happened in the public around the characters in that movie.

I remember it!
Man, the triple whammy of Dark City, 13th Floor and The Matrix was amazing for the 16-year-old me.
I went into the navy right as the matrix was coming out. Saw phantom menace twice instead ..... Actually bit even sure if matrix came out before or after my boot camp date. All I know is I got out of boot camp hearing about 2 movies, the matrix, and the blair witch. Matrix was one of my first dvd along with days of thunder.
And maybe eyes wide shut. Can't remember if that was the third but it was an early one. Made me feel like an adult watching it but still feel like it's just a wtf movie

What predator 2 totally connected to Predator 1!
You forgot Die Hard
pleasepaypreacher.net
The die hard series has a continuity of characters and locations
The original Die Hard is a sequel to a sinatra film. Or the story its based off of was.
pleasepaypreacher.net
Oh shit yes I forgot that!
If the original wasn't Nicolas Cage directed by Werner Herzog then the sequel is only enhanced by having no connection to it.
It’s a naked Harvey Keitel on cocaine directed by Abel Ferrera
win-win really
And is this a good movie? I remember liking it but I've only seen it once. Wondering if I should have her watch it or just tell her what it's about.
It's not a good movie imo, it's only notable for one scene and the fact that the director had such a fuckin hardon for that name.
Was it die hard or another movie that sinatra was contractrually obligated to be asked if he wanted to be in a sequel?
I think you're right. It's always been a little piece of movie trivia I loved.

Ah! It’s been a while since I saw it
It scared the ever living shit out of me as a kid and I’m trying to watch more horror in oct
I watched last train to busan which was an excellent zombie movie, and last cut of the dead which was delightful but was
Also need to watch haunting of bly manor which is admittedly not a movie
I always thought the "visions of hell" in the movie were remarkably well-done goresploitation, and apparently there was a lot more to it that got cut.
