I was wondering if anyone had some advice on dealing with a short attention span. As a kid I had been tested for ADD and all those other disorders and it turns out I just have a (sometimes comically) short attention span.
I managed to make it through high school with pretty good grades by working on multiple projects at a time, switching between them at random intervals. My notes were always an illegible mess of doodles and drawings. I just finished 2 years of community college as an animator, though it was a bit harder to keep focused and I ended up spending a lot of extra time getting things done because I couldn't work the whole day in class on my assignments. Now I'm trying to build my portfolio and looking for contract work and my attention span is killing me. Sitting at home with my computer I can barely concentrate on what I am supposed to be doing for 15 minutes before I need to get up and do something else.
On my PC right now I have open 13 firefox tabs, FFXI in a windower, Maya, Winamp, Photoshop, msn and flash. Switching between them all as I get bored. I have a wallpaper changer with at least 50 different ones, set to rotate every 5 mins because I get bored of them. Also the internet is the bane of my existence! This diagram pretty much sums it up.
I've heard of people going so far as to delete all their games and movies/music off their PC, though I don't think this would make much difference to me (I can count the number of games I have completed on 2 hands). I'd just start doodling in flash or go play with my pet mouse. It's like anything else is infinitely more interesting than what I'm doing right now. As I type this I'm supposed to be finishing a scene of animation in maya. So tell me, what helps you guys concentrate?
