On Friday afternoon, I hit Gold I up 1-0 in my promo series. Sure, weekends get pretty busy for me, but that seemed like a good window to finally make it back into Plat after a few years. (I will admit that I this point I'd also miscounted the days and thought I had until Tuesday, but disregard my inability to math for the purposes of this narrative.)
Saturdays are too busy for me, and I was quite tired by the time I got done with everything that night. Oh well.
On Sunday night at around 9:30 pm, my Internet blipped out as I started to finish this series, also with the realization that I only had two days after all(!). Well, there's still another, right? I went to my office to ensure a good connection
...3 losses in a row later, I'm hovering around 40 LP and hoping Monday will be better.
I basically blew off work yesterday to try to grind. By afternoon I was...all the way up to 52 LP, and I played another block last night after the kids went to bed. Total for that last day? Gold I, 55 LP.
So with promo series going away, maybe I would've made it Platinum after all, as surely 100 LP + 1 win would result in a promotion, right? Well, maybe not. LP will have to be recalculated under the hood for the new system, so maybe I wouldn't been at the same point. I could've played a lot more--I had a free Saturday a few weeks ago where I only got in one game due to spotty Internet, but I could've come to the office again. I honestly didn't even think I'd be so close to Platinum near the end of the season, but I went on a 9-game winning streak (as Miss Fortune, actually) to get me there and definitely deserved to lose a couple of those. (Thanks, Kindred who was flaming my build and my item choices and didn't want me to farm waves but also didn't want me dying instantly in teamfights to Rengar and LeBlanc but also wanted me to do damage from a gray screen! You did carry us to a victory and I appreciate that despite reporting you.) It hurts not getting there when I was so close, but the counterfactual "promo series is the only thing keeping me out" is just a complaint that obscures that I didn't win when I really needed to, and that happens sometimes in League of Legends.
And on the bright side, I had a lot of fun yesterday! Shyvana is still fun until you fall behind, and one game was just Lissandra clutching out some early fights and coordinating us to get a lead where we never looked back. I like Amumu and had a very much pop-off 10-kill Rammus game. My final "I'm really too tired but there's still a tiny shred of a chance so I'm going to queue up" game I accidentally took smite on Braum and stole the third drake to put us on soul point. (Next drake, we got the soul but lost the game!) Ultimately, League of Legends is supposed to be fun. Yes, the community is often terrible, and yes, I mostly play to be sociable with people these days (meaning with friends so not really ranked), but it's still a fun game.
If I'm being honest with myself, I'm probably mainly just fishing for commiseration over how close but also how trash I am for not finishing the job. (Maybe next split!)

hey i also am excited to get plat for the first time next season, pay no attention to my current gold 3 rank.
i honestly think i should have tried harder to grind for plat this season as well, but ranked anxiety is real and i don't enjoy playing it that much because it makes me feel bad, even when i'm doing well.

Yeah this. I really need a particular mindset to play ranked or a buddy to push me so I've ignored it mostly for the last couple of seasons
they put almost no effort into balancing it and it's entirely degenerate as humanly possible. i legit hate it and can't believe this is the only new mode we've gotten in 3 years after all the work they put in.
it absolutely cracks me up that they aren't allowing stats websites to show winrates of champs/augments because it's so obviously wildly broken and they are going to try and pretend it is fair for the 6 weeks it's in the game until it's taken out forever and thrown into the pit of all the other failed league game modes.

The #1 problem is the healing plants.
Why did you put objectives in TDM? It's TDM. And they're wildly strong, to the point of camping the plants as they spawn being the correct thing to do almost always.
I couldn't care less about the balance in funny silly side mode, but they completely messed up the gameplay loop imo.
I played three games with a friend last night who's given up League (we play a lot of TFT together, but he hasn't played actual Rift in like a year), and it was...pretty difficult, a bit obtuse, and I have some UI gripes. I think I agree that the plants aren't ideal: having something makes some sense, but they're really strong and you need to know where they spawn on each map. We finished 4/4/3, only winning like 4 rounds overall out of those 3 games, and it was hard to see how we could've improved our fate (okay, I took the "attach to your ally" augment on the last round and he had a battle sled and I got blown up instantly, but we weren't finishing ahead of 3 anyway XD). That last round was hilarious in a very "I can't believe how badly that went" kind of way. I'm not sure if I'd say it's fun at this point, but I'll probably play a decent number more just to see if I get a better feel for the mode. At least it's short, I guess?
Is there a way to see which augments you've taken? It was kind of hard to keep track, and also there were a couple of times where I seemed to have a different one from the one I meant to get?

my problem with the only thing being viable is degenerate nonsense is that it makes the mode have little replayability. we’ll see how they balance it but the thing that keeps you coming back to rift or aram is that literally every game is significantly different. i’ve played like 5 arena matches and they were *extremely* similar because it’s blind pick and people just pick the op stuff.
also yea the plants are way overpowered, it’s hilarious when you’re fighting someone and when you’re both in melee range with the plant the correct thing to do is to totally ignore the other person and hit the plant. the healing, the shielding, or the ult refresh would all be very very strong and instead you get all 3 lol
Oof, my new split placements were rough and went something like 1-4, placing into mid-Iron.
Thankfully Iron's a good place to farm mastery tokens, since I've gotten two Mastery 7 tokens for MF in the last two games, and I'm almost back into bronze.

taric kayn heimer teemo shaco are imo the most permabannable champs

shaco is statistically the worst of the champs being permabanned
remember you and your partner both have a sweeper, so take out the boxes around his teammate and kill them while he can't do anything because he's a shaco
(I have a shaco main friend and this happened to me over and over)
a lot of what shaco does played correctly in my experience is the poppy/alistar strategy of running away and then relying on the fire since his clone doesn’t take damage from the fire
@credeiki senna is pretty decent since you’re not constrained by support budget and can go full carry. Double bruiser or assassin is still rough, but her move speed, ghost thing, and bind make her tough to pin down. Her q can hit two enemies and heal ur friend pretty easily, and her long, scaling range means she can often shoot over walls and water. Also, her q hits the plants so despite having slow attack speed she can hit q hit a plant very fast
I’ve been playing with a friend of mine who’s new to league and he also appreciated the arena for learning fundamentals of how a champ works, positioning, etc
You’re not learning last hitting but you’re also figuring out the capabilities of other champs and who needs to die first
I’m really enjoying the new game mode cause I’ve been too tired to play a full rift game and it’s fun for me and my partner to load in and play whatever and brawl
The attempt to keep wrs off of stats websites (which is failing, sadly) is not to “hide how broken it is” but to try and keep the meta from calcifying and to try and keep people from tunneling in on who is op and exploding mentally if they are picked or at the concept that any sort of champion might have a higher winrate than any other
the only genuinely unfun matchup I had over 5(?) games was into heimerdinger so now I just ban that (and frankly those were over in about 3 secs so who cares). Doesn’t mean I win everything else but everything else has felt fine.
lfx and I have only really had success playing two bruisers because we are not capable of more sophisticated strategies and that’s fine (I thought Lucian/Braum could work but idk it did not really). We had a lot of fun as Kled/Sylas and he ulted us in at the beginning of every fight and then we just buttonmash until the other guys died
the meta is already calcified. i had a game earlier where nobody banned taric and there were 4 taric + melee fighter teams.
damn man, sounds like you should have banned Taric...

(I thought Lucian/Braum could work but idk it did not really)
reports from our ADC/support duo were that enchanters are by far the best thing to do with an ADC, with bruisers coming second and tanks basically being nonviable alongside an ADC; so might be worth a try if y'all got some fav enchanters

honestly I'm kinda enjoying playing as other stuff--I play so much tryhard adc that it's kinda fun to play something completely different. I do feel like Karma should be strong in this mode since she's so good in a 2v2, but probably doesn't do enough damage--dunno, honestly haven't tried it because I am now a pro Sylas player (...note, this is after the first time I played him where I spent half the game not remembering you have to recast his E and wondering why no one was getting stunned...)
In the 'I hate it, ban forever' column, I saw a mordekaiser with some amazing augments that let him heal back to full if he hit you once and that was sort of tragic and we could not kill him. I wouldn't play it though because I like feeling like I can chase people around with movement skills.
Morg is pretty strong since her ult can lock down the entire team and you can zhonyas through it. She can also stack an absurd amount of CDR and almost perma bind someone with her q. And of course stopping CC on a hard carry team mate is strong
I also fought against a jhin that could 2 shot me by the end of the game 😭

oh man I'm so scared of playing jhin in that mode but obviously I want to
also so far I went 5-0 in my flex placements and 0-3 in my solo q placements
idk man what do you even do with a toplane that has 97 cs at 40 minutes
i really think people who play this game are straight up not alright sometimes. i honest to god only think jungle exists to be the place laners can offload the blame of why they lost. without jungle they would have to confront the fact that maybe they also make mistakes and don't play perfect and would probably quit the game.
just an absolutely horrible role to play at times, if you brutally win topside, bot lane has a meltdown from minute 3 and ints on purpose. if you win bot, top is sprinting it down under tower the instant the enemy gets a rift herald no matter how many dragons you get. i don't get it man.

Hey, let me top lane and you can experiment with solutions
thank you so much for filling in clash! you were good; it was not on you.
Also sorry for bailing at 20 min during the last game, I suddenly almost had a panic attack bc of work stress I think and suddenly really needed to not be in front of my pc? it was not amazing; thank you for being flexible ;_; (…and let’s be real we were fairly unlikely to turn it around although mayyybe if I had been focused I could have carried with kaisa with more items. I really fucked up by not going cleanse there)
Post-reset people seem to be much more emo than usual in ranked. Had a yasuo ragequit because jungle took plates in his lane while he was dead. “Hey riven, do some neck pull-ups” and boom he’s gone.
i really hate that they added a rank to arena because i think it's a mode that *could* be fun and the rank isn't even a real thing as it has functionally no mmr and you can't lose ranks, but the rank makes people take it seriously and it sucks

You can lose rank points.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
in theory but it’s not based on mmr and you gain way more than you lose. the system is designed to push anyone who plays enough to gladiator. my 4th place finishes are like -30 and first place is +250
every single game of summoners rift i have played this split has either been decided by bot lane dying 6 times before 5 minutes or a smurf takes over the game and makes it impossible to play.
it's been so fucking terrible, i just am trying to finish the pass and i am having absolutely zero fun this split.
