In an attempt to get better at the game, I joined an amateur league.

And I gotta say, actually having an ADC I can depend on? It's a weird feeling.

I'm an incredibly broken record about this, but it's impossible to quantify how much better team-based games like this are when you're in an organized group. full stack >>> anything else

clash was a good step to encourage that playstyle to the general playerbase, I think? but amateur leagues have always existed and will always exist as good ways to get that as well

He can't be expected to CS when some scrub could come by and take his kill at any moment. He's gotta be on high alert for that shit

I just won a game where our mid lane Ekko disconnected at level 3 and never returned. I was highly skeptical we could pull this out but all credit to the rest of the team.

Basically what I learned is that if you have a Kayle on your team you're essentially never out of the game. Our bottom lane was Nautilus/Veigar (who also did a heavy amount of carrying). So my Vi and Nautilus basically just CC'd the enemy team long enough for Kayle/Veigar to actually kill them. Our lowest point was when our mid/bot inhibitors were down and we were barely hanging on with no towers taken by us. Eventually we won two team fights, one around Baron, and trucked it straight up mid and won the game.

Naut/Veigar sounds like absolute hell on earth to lane against tbh

One thing I've been trying to work on is my initial clear speed, doing some practice mode games. My initial thought was that an initial clear is almost like working on your foul shooting in basketball. It's something that I can totally control myself without relying on my teammates. It will improve my overall game by letting me get on the map faster than the opposing jungler for ganks, counterjungling, scuttles, etc. And this will greatly improve my economy because my camps will respawn earlier. All good things.

This has turned out to be harder in practice. Like I cannot meaningfully improve my clear speeds it feels like. I have watched the Phylaris videos for clear, and they're MOSTLY helpful, but I feel like I need to find a way to picture in picture the clear alongside mine. It's hard to remember the individual things they're doing compared to mine, and clear speed seems to be like a thing where lots of little efficiencies turn into a big advantage. It's not so much a "do this one simple thing to shave 10 seconds." A large part of it seems to be knowing exactly how/when things will die. Walking away from camps knowing that your dot ticks will kill it before it leashes. Another part is the kiting, staying so healthy while they jungle lets them pretty safely do a double camp at the end to finish.

This is another thing where one tricking seems like a massive advantage since I'm pretty sure you'd understand pretty quickly the exact positioning of where to do your abilities, how many auto attacks you need. Like Ekko is so positioning based with his Q and you need to be able to land both halves on all the raptors/krugs/wolves otherwise you're losing a decent chunk of time.

I don't really have a point or a question for the thread, just kind of musing on my trials and tribulations.

Okay, now that I'm finally getting some Renata games in... GODDAMN is it satisfying to watch a fed enemy carry turn around and murder someone on their own team.

Like, I just saw a Yone just delete some poor sap. And it felt goooooooood.

Actually got a S- that last game, I assume due to picking up a Triple Kill.

I think my best champ is Ekko at this point. He's pretty strong once you hit six, and does good burst, has some decent teamfighting since he can do a lot of cc, and his ult makes him fairly forgiving despite his complexity. My favorite thing is when people are trying to duel me and I just drop the stun at my feet, and they say "this fucking noob Ekko I'm going to kill him before it triggers." NOPE! Rewind, now you get to eat a ton of damage and the stun! He's just pretty good for picking your team up and getting there as long as I take care of my business.

So, my question is, who is the AD Ekko if my team comp ends up being super AP heavy? My gut says someone like Graves or Viego but I wanted to see what the thread thinks. Maybe Kindred? Kindred's high skill floor has been kind of intimidating to me but I am much better holistically, so maybe it wouldn't be too overwhelming now.

Kayn or Viego or Khazix, I think--those feel closest in terms of matching mobility and burst damage.

My beef with Kayn is that he feels so bad pre form and sometimes shit will just be out of control by then. Ekko has solid ganks at 3 and ramps up after 6. Kayn really only farms aggressively and does some light harass before form.

I'm trying to think more of a "provides similar things to Ekko," so my short list would probably be Jarvan IV, Vi, Viego, and Xin Zhao. Ekko to me feels somewhat bruiser-y (though assassin works), so all of these have options for more durability or damage depending on what you want. Some CC (Viego is the worst here), pretty good dueling, and they can gank early or just farm a bunch. I'd consider all of them fairly forgiving, I think?

Maybe even Hecarim would work here if you spec into more damage.

I'd kind of assumed / heard that from people, but the answer right now is...actually, not really. She loses a lot early game: these are basically surrenders, so the reasonable assumption is she's bad from behind, but it climbs pretty heavily to 25 minutes before dipping back down in medium-length games then climbing back again when it hits 40+. I would guess it's the strength of her ult late-game, where if she finds a solo carry they're just going to get picked and die, but it's hard to know just from looking at win-rate data.

Viego, on the other hand, has a slight but steady climb in win-rate to 40 minutes but dips down at 45. League of Graphs does have him spiking back up at 50+minute games, though.

(This is a kind of average picture from League of Graphs and Lolalytics.)

Got some more games in with Renata, and while I really do enjoy her... I don't think she's a low ELO champ. Since a lot of her power feels like it's tied up in Bailout, and you can't really rely on your team-mates to actually use it properly. Also *boy* does it suck when you get into a poke lane... or against a competent Soraka... and you just get bullied.

The ult is a real motherbusser, though. I've been thinking of it more like a wide and slow Sona ult projectile than trying to maximize carnage from berserk.

Probably going to go back to one-tricking Senna for a while, because gatdamn I forgot how much a Eclipse Q-Auto combo just deletes squishies. You still get heals/shield support things while also having access to Giant Cannon.

Well I guess I need to play only Nocturne. I am 3-0 with him and he has my best farm and kda stats by a huuuuge margin. He's just...very easy? Farms amazing, strong ganks, what's not to love?

My triad might be Ekko/Nocturne/Viego. Or Vi instead of Viego. The letters V and i will be involved somehow.

Someone I mentioned this to hadn't thought of it, so I figure I'd mention it here too just in case: if you land Q with Renata is should be pretty easy to line up an R into the Q reactivation, with the second Q stun guaranteeing it (or at least forcing a very tight a flash)

Man Nocturne basically does everything so well. His clearing/farming is so fast and easy, his ganks are really strong, especially post 6 (although not terrible if you can get that fear off without ulti). Takes objectives well, blah blah blah. Total package. I've had some heavy AP teams so I've been using him as my other pick a lot.

People just forget about the ult too. So many times I'll gank mid from brush, burn a flash, run to my raptors, they'll push up and OH NO THE SPOOKY GHOST IS HERE.

I might have to pick up some more meta champs to keep up. They seem to want to focus on my engage tanks and battle mages, though. It's humorous how many team comps my zac just slides into.

Yeah I have the same psychological thing, when I solo queue support I want to play damage carry and not play in a team-focused way at all, because I have no trust

If you can get the trust (or take a leap of faith in soloqueue, but it's so hard), you can get a taste of what it means to play supportive support, and how enjoyable it can be

I'm also, on a different topic, intrigued by the post they made about splitting queuing into ranked as only solo and flex as duo/trio. I'd like that a lot! (...because I'm jealous of people who have a duo partner...)

Just for clarity, I think 5s (well, and solo) would also remain as an option for flex unless I missed something, but yeah, I see no logical downsides to moving duos into flex. (This is admittedly dynamic queue all over again, so I hope Riot can get ahead of the rhetoric better this time around.)

Somewhat relatedly, had a couple of flex games a few nights ago in a 3-stack where we got to instantly queue thanks to a duo stack. We had them in back-to-back games, and the Pyke was cracked (so yes, the winning part was nice, too).

I think I have hit some kind of level of base jungle competence. I say this because I saw someone pick Shaco. I've been paired up against a lot of Shacos lately and normally I don't mind but I wanted to BURY him so I look up his counters. Amumu. Alright, I own him, I played him like five years ago, let's do this. I fucking smaaaaaashed him. Granted, Amumu is a super easy champ but still it requires some base level of competence in the actual mechanics to do it on a jungler I haven't played in...years.

I think I definitely didn't do myself any favors picking some fairly difficult champs to relearn the ropes with but whatever. They're cooler.

Like you just kill everyone. At one point my dumb team was down 4 kills to like 12 and I was ALL OF THE KILLS. I also had highest farm on the team for a vast majority of the game.

The shaco did a good job early in the game. Too bad he does nothing later and I just murdered him and his whole team basically all at once. Amumu really just hard countered their whole shit. Hard for Leblanc to run away when she's stunned forever. Hard for Trist to hop away from the gank when I have a second bandage ready for her.

I am 7-3 in my last 10 games, bronze 1 with 46 LP so climbing out of this is in sight. It's really nice to not be going on say, five or more game losing streaks, much less decent win streaks. I'm really, REALLY tempted to go back to some of the other champions I played earlier to try to get some redemption on them but I don't really want to fuck with my Nocturne/Amumu momentum since I could be silver in...tenish games if they go well. I'd probably better at Kayn now though.

I also found out that smurf queue is a thing and that's probably why I had such an amazingly dreadful time early on. Apparently when you come back it leaves your mmr at some higher inflated level assuming you'll get back to where you were after the rust shakes off. I thought this was a myth that bad players used to make themselves feel better, but then I read that recent Riot post about matchmaking and the revival MMR. That's a super dumb system because looking back on it now I can see I had probably around 40 games where I was regularly being paired with high silver/low gold players and just getting PUNISHED. Like, I'm gonna guess a lot of returning players just quit because my win rate was around 25-33% for a while (and even now is only 41% for the whole season).

Yeah if you win above 60% or duo with someone around that range then you get plopped into smurf queue. The good news is that if you win in smurf queue, you get a shitton of LP.

Yes, that was really the only way I stayed afloat for so long despite my horrible, horrible win%. I would gain 25 LP on wins and lose 5, so I could go deeply negative and still hover around low bronze 1, high bronze 2.

It's very frustrating too because they don't TELL you anything. It's like if you wanted to play basketball and so you tried out and got put on the JV team (bronze) but then they tossed you into Varsity because fuck it we think you got it kid. You get crushed and you never find out why. In reality I probably wasn't as bad as my record seemed but there's no indication of "hey we're putting you in hard mode right now." So I'm sitting there like "Bronze is a fucking murderer's row and this is the intro tier I'm very fucked." I guess if I started tracking my games earlier I would have seen their ranks and understood this but like, I didn't until about halfway through and you shouldn't have to use a 3rd party tool to understand what's going on in the base tier.

Well I lost two last night. One was fine, losses happen, the second game was fucking awful from the jump. The bot lane Ezreal stands in top pixel brush for...a long time, long enough for laners to hit level 2, then tries to gank the mid Lux with our Ekko mid and does...nothing because Ezreal isn't really a good ganker, especially at level 1. So I guess he's just extremely behind, dumb risky play, he can lane and this isn't a loss right?

WRONG. He goes duo top with Pantheon, which, in a vacuum isn't terrible necessarily depending on the bottom support, but it's Lulu vs Nami and Caitlyn, she's fucked. And in the meantime he's joking about how this new duo lane is going to CRUSH RENEKTON in all chat.

I wish for honorable players there was the equivalent of a coach's challenge. I shouldn't be subjected to that game and be totally trapped with them once the situation proves to be losing, I should be allowed to leave and save myself the time and effort. So you get a SUPER REPORT and if the report is validated, no leaver penalty, maybe an LP refund is too much to ask for. If the report fails, well you lose your super report for the season or something, or until you accrue enough honor again.

I had someone very confidently tell me I was playing Nocturne wrong. You see, I'm not supposed to ult into the enemy backline, I'm just supposed to use it to pick off isolated targets.

I said no no, I use it to get on their back line and deal a lot of damage to their squishy targets, ideally killing them or getting them to use a disproportionate amount of resources stopping me that the rest of my team can follow up and kill them in the chaos.

Nope, I'm not supposed to use it in teamfights. When I asked, okay, what am I supposed to do in team fights without my most powerful ability? Should I just fuck off and split push until needed? No, I can teamfight, I just can't use my ultimate.

Yeah I'm gonna guess the real team is VERY SCARED of a Nocturne just confidently walking directly at their front line.

Apparently there’s a fun interaction if Renata and Pyke are on the same team. Renata uses her ult on some enemies, and if to follow up on it one of the enemy players was the last to damage the target of Pyke’s ult, they get A Cut.

Pyke isn’t greedy and pays what’s owed.
