Well, it's not really "sucking". It's more like not being able to kill people.
How many kills do you usually get per game? I have yet to see someone break 20 kills in a game. I average around 8 or 9.
i guess my usual kill count is 5. sometimes higher, sometimes lower.
what pisses me off is just the fact that I have to treat EVERY enemy I see, even people with their backs to me, as fatal encounters. It's the same as in other xbox games.Halo2,Halo3,Gears of War,GRAW 1+2, it doesn't matter. they are somehow more resistant to fire than I am and dish out more damage than i could ever hope to do.the only game where this doesn't happen is vegas.
On the pc, I see an enemy as a target and I know that I can kill him. On my console, I know i'll be dead whenever an enemy sees me. And not because of not hitting them or not being able to play with a controller but just because it seems like my bullets do nothing. or less than nothing.[/QUOTE]
i have the same problem. I find that i'm not necessarily a 'bad' player, i just rarely do enough to be up there with the best in my team. Each encounter i generally expect to die, and sometimes i'll win it. Generally though, i find in a 50/50 situation, i'll be the one killed. Most games (going from my most recent multiplayer activity, the Halo 3 beta), i'll average about 8-10 kills, and a similar amount of deaths. I'm an average team-player.
So instead, i'll just go all out for the flag cap or bomb drop.
Personally, I think this point made on Ars Technica sums up my feelings:
Shadowrun wasn't just a title of a series, it was a word assosiated with a concept that was central with the IP. So I will pose just two questions to you.
Based on the Shadowrun FPS, answer the following:
What is a Shadowrun?
What is a Shadowrunner?
If you cannot answer either question, based on the FPS, then you might start to get the idea of why people say that the game is nowhere near the IP.
I'm not an expert with the material, but I'll play devil's advocate here:
The game takes place before the events which shaped the Shadowrun universe. This is the first generation of metahumans, from what I understand. Megacorporations are still rising to power and, as such, local authorities still exist(the Lineage).
It fits well from that perspective. Elves and dwarves would be about 20. Goblinization has already occurred so there are trolls. The game isn't about AAA-corp sabotage operations, so why is it so important we know what a shadowrun is or what shadowrunners are? Is that all the Shadowrun IP has to offer?
I went through and added evryone to my friends list, I hope to get some rounds in tonight. I do pretty well as a troll. I just got my chaingun achivment and I think I am gonna work on rifle/shotty next. I can't play an elf worth a shit, but I manage to plug plenty of those pesky keeblers all the time.
I think I'm getting a hang for the tech/magic, but my biggest problem right now is figuring out a consistent mapping for the tech/magic. Do you guys have any recommendations? For example, do you always put Teleport on a certain button, or do you just somehow remember which buttons happens to map to what, even in the heat of the moment? There have been countless times where I meant to Resurrect but instead threw a grenade. (Owwie)
I'm on the PC, so the controls are even less intuitive (unless you have a mouse with buttons on the side). I usually map my most commonly used power to right mouse click. I usually play an elf with Katana, Smoke, Teleport and Wired reflexes. Teleport goes on the mouse button, since you need to do it quickly, while moving etc. Smoke is another one that would be something I'd have easily mapped, since you need to do it in a pinch. Things like glider you don't need to map, since you just double tap jump to activate it.
Something that's a weapon, like the grenade, I would map to either the right mouse or the left trigger on the 360 controller. It's more intuitive, and you can then map your powers to the keys or the bumpers. It's really all a matter of what makes sense mentally for you though. If you find yourself pulling the trigger when you mean to throw a grenade and teleporting instead, then map the grenade to that button.
It definitely takes practice, and the first time you play it's not intuitive at all, but once you develop a playstyle it'll be second nature.
Be really really careful with Smartlink. I'm trying to train myself not to use it, and use a bit of restraint. Basically, the laser will give you away every time. I used to pack enhanced vision from time to time, but with as many people using Smartlink, I don't have to. I'll always know where you are, and especially where you are going.
So, just a tip, turn that shit off if you are not in battle.
Yeah, now that I've been playing more, that REALLY bugs me when my team does that. Especially in the big open levels, it lights you up like a christmas tree. And it's so easy to turn on and off, costs nothing and works instantly. The moment you kill someone, turn it off, the moment you need to fight turn it on.
On second thought, if you see Jarlek on your team, do what I'm saying, otherwise keep it turned on.

I'm so glad I rented Shadowrun. I mean it's fun and all. But:
There's these huge gorgeous maps and only like 1 pathway is used. The one from the artifact to the capture point. Not really a chance to explore or anything.
And then there's the fact that you can get switched from one team to the other in the middle of the match. So my giant Troll with a minigun and tree of life who's been defending the artifact to a 4-0 lead... is now stuck on the team where we have to run in fast and grab and go. One game I was playing on Blue then I get switched to red halfway in. Ok, fine, I had just started, whatever. Then after the game before the next match I go back to blue. Ok that's annoying but at least I haven't picked a race or equipment for the new match. Well halfway through that I'm back on red. Bullshit.
Also, the other team can vote to kick your best players out and so far they've succeeded on all 3 times even though our whole team votes for our player to stay.
And there's no switching from offense to defense in the game. Like in Halo one team is offense, next round you're defense. Here, if you're on RNA, you're defense for all 11 rounds until the next match.
And there's supposedly 9 maps. I think I've played on 4.
And it does take like 5-10 minutes sometimes to connect to a server, but once you're on, you can play game after game for a while, so that's alright I guess.
DAMN! Is this shit true? That's really messed up, first I've heard of it. That's basically game breakingly lame bullshit about the vetoing players out and forced even teams- Conker had some of that same shit and it was a nightmare.

If you select a persons name the options are like Mute, Gamercard, Feedback, and Call for Vote which then has everyone vote to boot or not. And trust me, I've been switched teams in the middle of a match more than once.
that seems really.. stupid. I've been kicked around the park by good players on the opposition in plenty of games before, but, that's just a part of the game. It's harsh to boot someone out of a game for being better than you.
You can boot people 'cause they are better than you? Seriously? If I didn't hear about it from the horse's mouth, I wouldn't believe it, because that is just so retarded I don't have the words for it.

I think that is BS, I belive you can only boot people on your own team. I.E. team killers and fucktards. I have called boot votes before but it never gave me an option to select someone from the other team. I also have never been shuffled around durring a match.

I can attest to being shuffled around, but man did it give my ego a boost. Leading my team to 5-0, then being switched to the other team, and leading that team to 6-5 for the win. One other time it put me on a team with one other decent guy and 6 people who we guess were bots. No conversation, running in circles randomly, swinging katanas at guys 70 feet away.

I can atest that bots wouldn't do that. The bots would at least use communication (1 Dwarf at *location*) and ranged weapons.
I think its important to state that it will only switch the teams around when the teams are uneven. I know id rather move team than play in a boring uneven match. Also, it will put you back with your party as soon as theres a chance for it to do so. I think its a pretty good feature tbh.
I also read that theres some kind of karma function in the game when if one teams totally owning the other it will bend the rules a little for the losing team such as letting them be reserected more than once and making it take more shots for a body to be cleared. I never realised this till i read it but now i think about it there have been times where its taken me ages to clear a body and other times where it just took a couple of shots so it makes sense.

Actually this makes a lot of sense, considering I've been rezzed more than once on a non-attrition map before. That and when leading 5-0 it takes a whole lot of minigun ammo to clear a body (I just checked).
Edit: Btw, in case you were unaware of this, you do not need to kill your teammate and then rez them to stop them from bleeding out. Rezzing them while alive works. Please keep this in mind.

is anyone trying to pretend this game has anything to do with the IP? just get over that fact and try to play it as a cyberpunk FPS (influenced by the SR world), and it does just fine. i'm a huge SR fan and i'm just as bummed as anyone else that this game wasn't some sort of RPG - but that doesn't have to get in the way of trying a new game thats actually fun.
Y'know, I think they could've done a fine FPS in the SR world, they just needed to pick the right setting.
Chicago, f'erex, during the Bug Hunt. That would've been perfect. I mean, you could be playing the UCAS army as they fight to stop the insect spirit invasion. (And, hey, that could work for multiplayer as well, sorta AvPish with one of the teams playing the spirits...)
Or the Renraku Arcology. SHODAN would look like a first-year programmer's pong game in comparison to Deus.

Yeah, but see that happens pretty later on in the timeline when most things are pretty well accepted (magic and tech-wise). I kinda see how they went with the dawn of the Awakening to start things. I just hope that the next game at least introduces ASIST (decking/hacking) technology.
If Kharma is indeed true (which, as my above post seems to indicate), it's ridiculous now that I think about it. You're being punished for winning. If you really wanted to stop the momentum, they could make it so weapons are lost at end of round (and reduce their prices commiserately), not make it so an elf survives point impact from a rocket launcher that kills a full health troll next to them.
Anyway, I dont know anything about the Shadowrun setting. Where would be a good place to start, any books around? Did they make any novels or was everything in the Pnp rule books.
I dont want to upset anyone here, but which came first Shadowrun or Rifts? It seems like they may be similar.

SR's a lot simpler, in my opinion. There are novels, in fact about 6 just got released (a trillogy and 3 stand alones) and while not steller, they are a decent read and a good introduction to the world.
SR4 was a big revamp to the rules (the trillogy take place during SR3 timeline) and a major change to the setting.

Yeah, I was the troll. Then again we were getting a lot of weird things going on. Shotguns that killed from across level (I shot the shotty in a last ditch attempt to kill the flag carrier), stand up fight between SMG Elf and Minigun toting Troll, elf won, our flag carrier got the flag in the evac point one time and ended up dying after about 3 seconds of 'why in the world isn't it ending the round?' Really, really weird games today.
Also, is it just my imagination, or was there a tooltip that said dwarves can't be mortally wounded? Because yeah, that's wrong.
In order to allow Xbox 360 players and PC Vista Gamers owners to play together they have adjusted PC controls and given Xbox 360 players aim assist technology (basically it interpolates your movement to go towards the enemy player).
How noticeable is this for the players? Is it a lot like Halo's circle of vagueness?
The best thing about the game is NO leader boards. The game offers only fun, so no stat whores kicking newbies out like assholes. I hate ranked games for this reason.

I thought I was resurrected twice tonight. Hmmm.
Also, quit hatin on Ninja elves. I had my best games tonight. Katana, shotgun, and teleport, gust, and enhanced vision. They never expect the shotgun.
EDIT
What about BOTS? Don't they have generic Bot 1, Bot 2, names? I'm gonna be disappointed if I've been playing half bots and half humans.
Just played for a good 3 and a half hours tonight. Definetly some of the most fun I've had on the Xbox in a long time. I played as a troll almost the entire time. Minigun + Smartlink + Tree of Life + Narrow Hallway = Carnage. Threw in Gust as well because you know the other team was made up entirely of katana wielding elf ninjas. Use Gust to blow those fuckers away from me. I got about 20 kills that map. I personally don't mind playing a team full of elves. They're easier to kill. Just gotta watch my back.
There was one time when my teammate gusted 2 enemies, an elf and a human, into a corner while I wasted them with the minigun. The highlight of my evening of gaming, I must say. 8-)
On a side note, does anyone else love gusting artifact flag runners away from the evac point right before they cap it?
Holy moly, once you get the hang of things, and you happen to be on a good team, this is one fun game. I also agree with the Troll + Minigun + Smartlink goodness. Instant carnage. But hey, I'm friendly enough to toss out a rez to those who need it too.
The only downside is that we ran into a bunch of lag. (Despite that, we still had fun) It's weird because I thought this was on dedicated servers. Anyone else run into this Monday night?
On a side note, does anyone else love gusting artifact flag runners away from the evac point right before they cap it?
Damn, I knew I was forgetting something from my dwarf defense build. Tree, Summon, SMG, Rez and Gust should work out ok. Now I just have to get onto a server that isn't full of muppets...
Anyone else having issues with server disconnects? The last couple of games I've played I've been disconnected from the server in the middle of a match.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. It's a game that doesn't attempt to do anything with the license, and uses the name simply as a basis.
I mean, it pretty much comes off as a slightly less cohesive Mario Kart. Mario Kart could have easily been done without using the Mario Brothers universe, and the game plays nothing like the traditional Mario Brothers games, but Mario Kart uses the Mario Brothers setting and items to bolster it's own gameplay and give it a unique identity.
At least, that's how I see it.
I don't really care. It's fun as hell, and I really dig the table top game.
but that is rather flimsy reasoning.
The people who care about Shadowrun already know the answer to those questions anyway. Shadowrun 360 could even be a springboard for those unfamiliar with the license and encourage them to check out the games real history.
I can see your point (and I am enjoying the game), but imagine how Mario fans would feel if there hadn't been a Mario game in a decade, and then when one came, it was Mario Kart, instead of a "real" Mario game...and there was the very real danger of never seeing another proper Mario game.
