    Yeah, maybe they added microtransactions!
(Just a reminder that change isn't always a good thing)

There already were microtransactions in the old trilogy (mostly in ME3).

Yeah, but they've learned so much since then. There's so much potential to add.

Now most squadmates are only temporarily in your party. If you want them to stay on your ship or join you in fights after their part of the story, you'll need to invest in the Gacha system! For $5, you have a 33% chance of unlocking a new character! And a 66% chance of unlocking a new skin for whoever you let die in Virmire.

I've only ever really seen Japanese companies do interesting things with Remakes/Remasters.

Usually the West just slaps on some new shaders, bundles all the DLC and calls it a day.

Well, Mafia Definitive Edition just came out, so that would be at least one Western example.

I haven't really noticed much of an overall difference in how studios approach them, TBH. Most Japanese remasters are also the same thing as before, just slightly prettier.

And given how awful Bioware is about DLC, just having all that nicely bundled for the ME games would be great.

Those rates are way too generous. Bump it down to 1% or lower for the new character.

There are quite a JP remakes/remasters that are complete overhauls. Usually for older PS1 era games but still.

And even in their smaller efforts there have been ones that make gameplay tweaks just to smooth everything out or add new elements.

Of course most remasters are pretty standard but I wouldn't say its 1 for 1.

Though I will say the West has been putting in more effort lately.

Stuff like Tony Hawk for example. But that was a PS1 game too and most of them aged terribly.

According to steam I've played 134.5 hours of the Command and Conquer remaster!

It's a ridiculous overstatement to say Western remasters are low quality and Japanese ones are great. The Silent Hill remasters on 360/Ps3 were basically fraudulently bad. Halo Anniversary has some pretty wonderful remaster features, like the original graphics that you can switch back to at the touch of a button. As with everything in game dev, it's very much a case by base basis. For every Spyro trilogy remaster, there's a barely functional upport of something like the Jak trilogy.

  • DarkPrimusDarkPrimus Registered User regular
*pushes glasses up bridge of nose* Ah, but you see, the Silent Hill remasters were done by a Western company- [crushed to death by mountain of evidence of Western studios doing good remasters of Japanese-developed games]

  • DragkoniasDragkonias That Guy Who Does Stuff You Know, There. Registered User regular
I don't remember saying they're low quality just on average I don't see much done with them outside of industry standard which is usually graphical tweaks and DLC packages.

I mean I haven't played every one so I might be wrong, so you can give me some examples.

Honestly it doesn't matter if they announce an HD trilogy remaster or Mass Effect 5 or whatever. This alone is going to make it awesome.

I just noticed that in my Xbox One's library, Mass Effect 2 and 3 are listed as "coming soon". (They're installed via my physical 360 copies.) I wonder if that's remaster related, or just that they'll be added to Game Pass when EA Play becomes a perk of GP in a few days? Probably the latter, but still worthy of note.

I feel like blurring the hell out of the picture as a tease before N7 day is a bit of a buzzkill, because you can clearly see that it's Mass Effect's logo, N7 helmet, Garrus and Liara, and some other assorted figures (four of 'em, so presumably ME1 squaddies though I can't pick em out) + the Normandy, but you can't make any detail out so it's just frustrating to look at, and even though the color scheme looks cool, it would be cooler to see the clear image for the first time rather than the glaucoma version.

    So...here are my overriding question(s):

Who's Jeff Grubb and what's significant about a tweet of his that's a blurry-but-obvious-what-it-is picture of Mass Effect stuff? For all we know (from what a quick Googling about the guy could show me), it could be a new comic series or an official table-top RPG system set in the Mass Effect universe.

Well, a tease of a cover of a not-ME remaster would be even more disappointing, but he apparently writes for VentureBeat and in an article all but said that the Legendary Edition is going to be announced tomorrow, and another game writer tweeted that Mass Effect fans should check out tomorrow because "it's going to be Legendary." So yeah it's the trilogy remaster.

With that in mind, I'm going to guess the four other squadmates are Tali, Mordin, Miranda, and Grunt, even though I still can't make anything out from those vague blurry shapes that presage how I'll see grandchildren 70 years from now.

I do have to say that the framing and color pattern (while, yes, is very Paragon/Renegade) just makes me think of the Rise of Skywalker posters. In fact, when I was skimming through the thread and that tweet came up, I thought it was a Star Wars thing until I looked closer.

It's a combination of "those damn SJWs made it political" and graphical glitches made the typical people very angry.

A bunch of misogynist trolls hated on the game at launch and made fun of it for being a buggy mess. That gave the game a sour reputation straight out of the gate.

But Mass Effect Andromeda is a thoroughly mediocre game on its own merits. And the high pedigree of the franchise further exacerbates the disappointment.
