The jaggi thing went down like a bitch in like 2 minutes. The mizu jumps around solo much. I would get like 2 hits with the LS on it before it jumped halfway across the map. Didn't end up killing it since people kept getting hit with the water gun and dying. It felt like we were starting to kill it since parts were breaking, but it just wouldn't die.
With 4 people and 4 pets, there is a LOT of visual noise. But it was still easier to look at than world. Didnt really play too much with the wirebug because it was hard to remember to do it. But it seemed to have the same problems as the clutch claw. Getting knocked out of animations mid air just because a monster moved.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

So it's good and I KNOW this is entirely because I started in World, but that 30 fps is rough.

The servers must be getting hammered, the demo download hasn't even started for me. Time to hit the hay I guess and see if it's started when I wake up.

Lance feels good, definitely a bit snappier than MHW, you can do power guard without the MHW counter thrust/power guard hop.
Still wrapping my head around the wirebug and monster riding.
Got Mizutsune before bed with SA. Wirebug attacks are neat - really help the mobility, the super armor charge has decent damage. Downside, you're always in axe after them it seems, as something to be aware of. Phial explosions happening in axe mode too is a nice buff to axe. Not sure if it still has the impact slam buff from Iceborne.... stacking those could be silly!
DBs really don't seem to mesh with me ever. Lance is a maybe, since I haven't used them heavily since like... Tri? And counter+attack buff is a great wirelance button.
One of the DB ironsilks is straight up marking them to add more damage the more you hit them during the duration of the mark? That is a very appealing risk/reward button once you're charged up! But I'm a complete klutz with the weapon... I'm so used to weapons that can quickly get into guard/evasion and DB just... can't do that outside of demon/archdemon.
For some reason my surround does not work with this, the monster and hunter sounds are incredibly muted. I recorded some gameplay and it sounds fine on my phone, so I guess it's something with my switch settings.
Anyway here's something neat I did with the new recovery dodge:

It seems like it takes way more hits to charge up the sword mode. I like the silk gap closer, but I really don't like that there isn't a sword version of it.
Edit: it also feels like switching into sword mid combo doesn't really work anymore.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of how this series constantly iterates on mechanics like mounting or wall slams so it can improve and rebalance them.
Combing slinger slams, mounting, and all that jazz into one slick package is just fantastic

So, the 30 quests. Before I start really getting in to this demo, how limited is that?

You probably already tried this, but in case you haven't: there is an option to switch the audio type to Home Theater mode. That might enable surround. Haven't tried it myself.

Skeptical that surround ever "worked" with the built-in recorder, its very likely just grabbing stereo and if the game has important stuff elsewhere like center speaker, its probably just being ignored.
I enjoyed this demo. It definitely has a MHW vibe compared to MHGenU. The wirebugs will take some practice but I think it’s going to be super fun. The lance feels good, which is the only weapon I use.
I hate the voice that the character has. I hope there are better options when you create your character (I only played the lance man, I don’t know if the other weapons give you other voice options).

Dual Blade lady isn't much better I assure you.
But yes we will have options. Speaking of options you can dial down how often the PC speaks.
you can adjust how often the player character speaks (0-100%, defaults at 100%) and you can turn off hearing other players speaking (default hearing everyone)
That’s good to know you can turn down/turn off the voice. It’s not a dealbreaker or anything but I really didn’t like my character making quips when I’m trying to frantically use a whetstone.
Can you change it up to monster hunter simlish? Because that's the first thing I did when I fired up World and I have never once considered turning it off.

When I started the demo it had me choose between English, Japanese, and Monster Hunter Language voices.

Yeah, you can put it on MH language.
Did they swap some of the buttons around from World? I haven't played MH in a while but I didn't expect to be quite so rusty!

Yup, I tried several modes and even the "Switch speakers" mode, and it still sounds really muted. MHGenU doesn't have this issue and the surround works fine there, so I'm just going to attribute this to an issue in the demo.

I am a lance main as well, it felt pretty good and intuitive going back to controller after replaying MHW and then moving onto iceborne as m&kb on steam after originally being on ps4.
As for the voiceover, I can see it getting old but the first time my dude said "yoink" I smirked since that is typically what im saying in my head whenever I snatch materials.
Well for some reason my 5.1 no longer works with the Switch. I use an optical cable so the Switch normally doesn't support it, though I seem to remember having made it work before so I probably have to fiddle around with my TV settings. Switched to stereo and all is good again.

Yeah the Switch is really finicky about surround sound. I know a few people that have had trouble getting it to work with their setups because they had a soundbar instead of an AV receiver. I would try to connect it as directly as possible, avoiding anything like ARC or HDMI switches. Not sure if I've ever heard of an optical cable working with it.

I guess this is what happens when your console is dormant since April.

I believe it's 30 combined shots at both monster quests? The tutorial quests don't count against the 30.
Controls are gonna take some getting used to and/or customizing. Keeping camera lined up felt difficult.

Who was saying underpowered?
Mizu bodied me when I tried gunlance to goof off. The easy fight is a good way to get people's feet wet with how over the top your gear is.
Arzuros and Rathian are wandering around in the beginner and intermediate fights if you're looking for variety.
Tricky thing with mizu is deceptive active hitboxes as it's foaming?

I rode Azuros, launched it into the other thing, then rode that and launched it back into Azuros, who then left the area.

Great Izuchi and Mizutsune, priming the other monster for another round of it is... silly. Also, what happens when you have players controlling both

Otherwise it'd basically the same as any other monster hunter: go snack a monster. When is dead, that's a quest done.
I wouldn't stress. Test out the new mechanics, play with weapons, then put things down till the 23rd
