Looks like I won't be able to get it to work, but setting the switch to "Auto" on sound, makes the stereo play on both front and rear speakers, so at least it "feels" surround, so I'll take it.
If you sleep a monster, when you put down bombs your character will whisper the voice lines so they don't wake it up. Great detail!

Loaded it up and messed around a little. I'll probably end up sticking with SnS at least to start with, there is just a lot going on to figure out with all the widening and stuff. Otherwise it seemed really fun. Definitely enjoyed the monsters interacting with each other.
"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the color of their blood."
Well...it's been way too long since I played a Mon Hun game, and this Mizu wiped the floor with me more times than I'd like to admit.
I'm not sure what it is, but something about the glaive in this game feels...off compared to world. There's so much more maintenance necessary - it doesn't look like marking with a pheromone shot automatically makes the kinsect go and attack the monster, so I kept sitting with it on my arm more than I was used to from World. I'm also not sure exactly the Zl + A silkbind attack works. I get that it's a dodge, but also sometimes it healed me after the dodge, and I'm not sure what triggers that.
On the other hand, the ZL+X silkbind is pretty rad. I can zoom around the battlefield really easily, I feel like I never have to touch the ground. I wonder if they improved the aerial combos at all to make this a valid tactic.
The new riding mechanic is interesting, but finicky. Most of the time I just yeet the monster into a wall and then try and remount and do it again.

Doesn't help that the Kinsect they picked for the demo is slooooooooooooow.

I am trying to finally buckle down and learn the CB
It is not going well.
Smash all the buttons. Block and hit things until you put the sword in the shield. Then hit some other buttons so you change into axe mode. Now mash buttons until you spend 5 minutes charging up an attack, panic that you are about to blow all your phials on a burst the monster isn't even in range for, smash buttons until your character gives up on the hulk smash and does a twirl instead. Now do it all over again, but try not to cancel it at the end, and try and hit the monster...

when i learned CB i just did what it looked like the speedrunners did. charge the sword, fill the phials, charge the shield, and yolo super ultra discharge slam. eventually i would hit more than i missed.
@Arch the heal is if the kinsect hits the monster when you used the ZL+A slikbind. So basically when you're very close to the monster, it goes out a bit and then returns to you as part of an animation and if if connects it brings green extract.
Rise demo is neat. I absolutely love the new hunting horn style. I never got the hang of it in MHW because of all the different songs to learn, but now all I have to do is slam.buttons and it plays the songs? Like, okay yes this is a bit dumbed down, but goddamn in the best way. Now I can think about dodging and staying on target like I could with other weapons, and still be effective!
I downloaded it and gave it a try. Definitely feel like I'm in the minority, but after so much time in world the graphics are really paining me. Maybe I just need to put it in handheld mode, but docked on the big screen it is feeling really rough and I'm now on the fence on whether I'll actually buy this. Sucks, because I was pretty excited and I put hundreds of hours into MHW.
Also, I have no fucking clue how to get the monster in a ridable state. I did the damn tutorial and nothing seemed to work; I spent like 20 minutes with the game berating me to just do it. Related: apparently there is no way to just quit out of a hunt in progress? The upside of that is somehow eventually it managed to succeed and I could progress, but no idea how I did it. The only thing that seems to work for me outside of the tutorial (which to be fair I only tried once) is just find another monster to fight the one I want to ride.
On the positive side, when charge blade clicks, it clicks and wrecking face with it is awesome.
Rideable state is exactly the same as mounting from the previous game: You need to use attacks that inflict Riding damage. This is denoted by the damage numbers having a blue bar behind them.
Other monster's attacks do riding damage, Silkbind attacks do riding damage. The new spider you can grab off the ground does riding damage, enough to instantly put the monster in the rideable state. I have no idea if aerial attacks/sliding attacks do riding damage and i'm not even sure if they're still in the game - i couldn't do the charged sword plunge with greatsword when i tried, but i tried like... once.
Also, while i dont know this for sure it's very likely that Riding damage just like Mounting Damage before it is actually a status effect - every monster will have a hidden "Rideable" status bar that's filled up by inflicting riding attacks, and quite probably drains slowly. Hitting the threshold will trigger the Rideable threshold, empty the status, and increase the threshold for the next one.
hammer seems to have dropped power charge in favor of a toggle between regular and power charge movesets
i am unsure what regular mode is bringing to the table
When you switch from purple to yellow it puts you at full charge immediately and moves you forward a bit, pretty useful for doing the level 3 slam quickly and powering up the silkbind attacks.
Ok went into the options, found one that auto-focuses the camera on a locked target and also swapped Special Weapon Action from ZR to R so my muscle memory could enter Demon Mode. Killed auto-sheath.

I feel like this version is more for Japan and is meant to favor portability over shinyness.
But I'm sure they'll also planning a MHW2 for the next gen consoles
Well got a little more time to play and beat the mizu solo with LS. Still not very good at using the wirebug, but being able to dash around was helpful. It was also confusing which wirebug attacks would come out. Sometimes I did a downward slice, other times I would do the clutch claw weakness animation. One time I put a web of wires in front of me and locked me in place but I dunno wtf that did. Maybe it's a counter?
I did the tutorial mission and had the lbg equipped. It didn't feel like an lbg. It felt more like a blowgun, there wasn't the normal screen shake or meaty sounding hits. The wirebug attack that launches you forward then does a huge shotgun blast is cool though.
I imagine a lot of the feelings are due to the terrible sets and loadouts they give during demos though.
Huge fan of the dog though. Definitely grabbing that amiibo. Probably the cat too.
Ya it definitely feels more like monster hunter than world did. I like some of the qol from world like hotkeys and fast travel, but like the older games art style. I hope the in game multiplayer setup is better than the weird lobby thing they have right now though. World did a pretty good job there. And sos was a good system.

Aerial attacks and sliding attacks are both in and capable of building up Ride. Don't forget you can always use your wirebug charges to get yourself into the air for some basic aerial attacks.

The basic sheathed wirebug options will definitely make it easier for a lot of weapons to get mount/ride damage in.
On my last run I realized I can use Piercing Bind multiple times at once on a downed monster while in Archdemon Mode. That feels like a trick that will carry me through Low Rank.
Rise really feels like it puts together the best things of World and GenU together, and then some more. I'm really loving it and can't wait for release.
They really nerfed Gunlance hops, it seems like evade extender will be a must once again, I'm ok with this I guess.
I could try it a bit, did the Izuchi fight. The roll distance does seem to have been shortened, but man does it feel good to be back in my big goofy primary color armors.
I don't think I quite got how the wirebug moves worked for the CB, which is the weapon I tried. Like, okay, so ZR does wirebug stuff. When I'm sheathed, it's supposed to do basic movement - X for diagonal up, A for directly in front. Then, supposedly, while unsheathed these buttons should result in Ride damage attacks according to the game text. But far as I can tell with CB ZR+X just kind of does a forwards move not unlike sheathed ZR+A?

ZL initiates wirebugs, not ZR. ZR just fires them in the direction of your reticule when sheathed.

ZR mostly shields and does the special charge blade stuff, yes, I'm aware. I never actually call them ZR or ZL, they're just trigger buttons, so I wrote wrote the name wrong. Question stands.

Check the Hunters Notes, it describes the silkbind moves for each weapon. Not all of them are attacks.
ZL+X for Charge Blade is Morphing Advance: "Uses a wirebug to launch you forward while your charge blade switches to axe form. While in motion monster attacks won't kock you back or stun you."
