I just want to pay my rent but I'm locked away from the drop box - Tenant rights?

Hey Friendos,

I have a pretty sweet apartment and for the most part the staff is great, I pay my rent every month on time without issue by dropping my check by the office. Lately due to covid the office has been closed for days at a time, this wasn't an issue until they decided to "increase security". The structure that houses my apartment actually consists of 2 connected buildings via garage. Building A, is a smaller set of studio apartments and houses the main office with rental drop box. Building B only has a front door and an elevator in to the garage and the upper apartment levels.

Building A is no longer accessible for the residents of building B, and the same the other direction, meaning I do not have access to the office to drop my rental check. When I emailed the office about this they asked me to just drop it off during business hours... and proceeded to limit the availability of the office to a couple hours a day a few times a week as they only have 1 person showing units across several buildings in the area. Needless to say they were never in the office when I had time to drop by, even after being told when they would be in the office for sure. It took me about 4 days and I managed to get another resident to let me in to drop my check off.

When I brought this up they let me know I can pay online, upon investigation that would be with an added "convenience fee."

This has also caused other issues, mainly the office has instructed all packages be dropped off in building A, where they sit in the lobby for sometimes days at a time before someone in the office brings them over to building B.
I have asked for a key to allow me access to pay rent and pick up my packages from the lobby and was denied, I even offered to pay for it.

Do I have any recourse here?

I'm not looking to start trouble I just want a key so I can pay my rent and pickup my stuff.

( I'm in Seattle)

    Residents of Building A do.

    Residents of Building A do.

Ask around and see if others living in Building B are also having issues with this. The more people who are willing to register a complaint, the more pressure there is to get something done about it.

You can mail in your rent check. It’s a bit old school but in most states they have to let you do that.

It’s likely buried in the leasing agreement where to mail the check too.
