Anyone here got a mor constructive term for when one's daughter is being a complete pill?
I don't want to tell her she's bossy for all of the reasons you've already read about.
We tried (and still do try but they're 8 and 10 so the conversations have gotten more nuanced) to phrase things in terms of helpfulness and feelings, and also who gets to make decisions.
-"I need you to help me by doing X" if it's a thing they're trying not to do.
-"You're hurting my/someone else's feelings by saying X" or "you're making me/them sad" or "you're making me/them not want to play because you won't let me/them make any decisions/do what I/they want."
-"I know you want X but I'm your parent and I get to make that decision" and if the kid wants to talk more about it then explain why, which is where you'll usually lose a very young child but it can lead to some useful conversation down the road, and also drawing a hard line at that point where no tantrum or other emotional manipulation will work.
Abigail is 5 now, but was born in November, so she missed out on Kindergarten last year. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise because of COVID. That being said, are their specific things I need to do to get her enrolled? Not sure where to start outside of just googling something. I haven't gotten any paperwork in the mail, which might be because it's still February or weird COVID times.

The other day:
Wife: So I think Toby can read better than I think we thought he could. I was watching YouTube yesterday and he pointed to just the words "Hollow Knight" as one of the suggested categories, and then scanned the videos and picked one to watch.
Me: I think he just knows what the title "Hollow Knight" looks like, I don't think he's actually reading it.
Wife: No, there was no indication of what it was, it wasn't in the same font. My boy knows all 26 of his letters.
Son: *nods sagely in affirmation*
Me: . . . Well, I stand corrected.
Son: *Chesire Cat grin*
Me: You know, if you know the letters you could say them.
Son: *Runs off giggling*

Ellie found the cookbook section of the bookstore like that the other day.
We were just wandering around the children's reference books section (be still my heart!!) And she goes "mommy look! Cookbooks!" And points to the spine of a book that says "Best kids cookbook" and so .... Yeah.

I registered my almost-5 year old in a few months kid for Kindergarten starting in September, and I'm in Canada so maybe things are different here, but no one mails you here to enroll your kid. You're supposed to just know I guess. In non COVID times you go to the school and line up to register, but this year it was online.
There were quite a few pieces of ID and documentation required.
Yeah, I remember being surprised that I had to reach out and do the enrolling myself, and sometimes you have to search pretty deeply to find the deadlines!
Transferring Anya across states was interesting, I basically couldn’t do much until we had already moved! Even though I had an address and move date I couldn’t enroll her in advance. It was stressful moving then immediately trying to register her.
Oh yeah since you asked Janson (thanks by the way) my daughter is fine. She really just needed to take it easy for a day and she seems pretty much fine. We're trying to limit her high impact activities just in case but so far so good!
She does not appreciate jokes about brain damage, which is disappointing but what're you gonna do?
She was a great patient, but the nurse was worried about the hearing screening. Ripley wears these headphones and she points to the picture of whatever th recording says and she wouldn't do it every time.
I was like, lady, this kid pretends to not be able to do shit all the time. I've heard her count to thirty by herself when she doesn't think anyone is around then when you ask her to count to ten she just starts saying random numbers.
I am in the business of saving lives.

Honestly I’m not surprised, it’s mostly to stop people pretending to live in “better” school catchment areas so they require you to be physically there to enroll.
@MNC Dover check with the local district, it's different everywhere. Ours didn't even notify us it was this week, despite already having a kid in the district system. Good times. For us, it's some forms and verification of "I live here" via electric bill or similar. Later on, they ask for immunization records and other stuff.
Another device management with kids question: do any of you have Kindles for your kids, the e-reader type? If so a. have you tried using Free Time with them and how'd that go and B. how's doing stuff like getting them library books?

I've caught Toby whisper-counting on his fingers and the moment he knows I'm there, it stops.
Expecting kids to just do what you ask or expect them to is a hilarious concept.

Toby has a Kindle Fire, we use Free Time to keep him out of the rest of the pad (because by god he'd get everywhere otherwise), and he has two accounts: one with some basic learning games, and another specifically with Osmo games that has its own PIN to get in to, because that requires set-up to play with and a modicum of supervision, and focus, and he doesn't always have those.
I have no other real input. It works well, he learns amazingly through screens instead of from hooman beans, and I encourage him to engage with the games (to the point where he knows a game well enough that he'll make mistakes on purpose to watch the character on-screen despair. I'm sorry, Curious George, my son really does know what number does go there, but you throwing your arms up is just funnier.).

Daughter has the tablet kind and I have an ereader. Getting books from the library is super easy.
It's probably through one of a few companies; I've had the best luck for her from Overdrive, but if course got to go with what your library has signed up for.
You need a library card, an Amazon account. You then tie those together when signing up for Overdrive or whatever.
You then just browse their selections, pick books or put them 'on hold' if all checked out. Then you say Get Kindle version, and it takes to to Amazon to sign in. Choose the device and they get downloaded. Not every book has a kindle version.
If the device is on your account, she may see any books you've checked out or bought as well. May not matter when they're young, but this year I created a separate Amazon account for her, so when getting books, it just goes to her Kindle and she doesn't see our stuff.
Comic/graphic novels like Dog Man don't always work or look great on the ereader models, if that matters.

That part makes sense, I was expecting to receive some pre-enrollment info/assistance/‘here’s what you do’
Like with preschool in the same district we had to sign up online first, before then submitting vaccination records/proof of address
Thanks! My kids already have the Fire Tablets with Free Time and it's really great, I've said it before and I'll say it again, but we restrict them to an hour on school days and an hour and a half on weekend days. Looking forward to the day when we can actually travel, I can see the Kindle e-readers being useful but I saw anecdotal evidence that getting Free Time to work on the e-readers was kind of a hassle. We'll see! Eventually!

Ellie's first transition visit to primary was this morning.
She did very well at drop off. I go get her in 30 minutes.
With our boy, also 3, he has some toys that will ask questions or “games” like “press the button that makes this sound” (sound of plane taking off)... and he actively presses a wrong button because he likes the Wrong Answer Sound better than the Right Answer Sound... and he’ll look at you and laugh and go “oops! Sorry!”
Listening to my daughter updating a friend of hers, who has been out of town for a while, about another friend of hers
" Bridget is Brid now. She.. hrm.. he. He is now Brid, ok?"
I was kind of nervous that my daughter was having a hard time with this, as it took her over a month to stop using the name Bridget for her friend, but I think she's got it now.
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Niko hasn't seen another child besides Anya in over a year.
But his teacher recently started a friendship club over Zoom.
Just received his report card today and he 'meets expectations' in every area except 'respects and cooperates with peers' for which he received 'exceeds expectations'.
I'm currently listening in on his zoom call and he:
- complimented other kids
- is waiting for his turn to speak
- sang happy birthday to a classmate
Apparently our property tax assessment and electricity bill weren't enough proof that I live where I do, and now I have to send another document to prove I live where I do to register my kid for kindergarten. :rotate:

Feel awful, my son fell off some play equipment as he stumbled and fell backwards.
I dived a caught him at the last second though he still hit the ground albeit very slowly.
He's got s grazed chin and a small bruise on his cheek but is alright. I dread to think what would've happened if I didn't catch him and I can't stop playing the whole thing through my head over and over again.

Welcome to the club. We have badges and novelty stress balls that will be sent out sometime in the next year.
I watched as my son knocked the side of his head against a kitchen surface. My partner was roughhousing with him and accidentally dropped him from shoulder height at a stupid spot in the room. It started bleeding immediately and we had to rush to go and see a doctor. They glued it together but he has a scar on his ear now. So yeah, every time I see his ear I think back to watching him falling down and bleeding.
No nap today, so she's crashing hard now. Not as much of an appetite as usual but she ate her applesauce just fine, so hopefully she feels better tomorrow.
Day 3 of Oh Crapping, taking advantage of the long weekend
Day 1: we learned her signs and learned both that she can hold it and it’s not that big of a deal to clean up, so we could relax watching a little bit
Day 2: able to regularly get her to the potty when recognizing her signs, but she was struggling to figure out how to do it sitting; we caught the standing turd in the potty before it hit the floor but there a few peeing accidents standing right next to the potty
Day 3: first sitting potty, followed 2 hours later with a sitting poop in the family room and oh god I need more candles
BAM
got a kid that knows *how* to use the potty with a rough understanding of *when*
We’ll practice naked the rest of today to try to get prompting down better, and then tomorrow we’ll do commando pants as practice for going to daycare Tuesday...
Ellie is meant to be starting primary school on next Monday. She's meant to be having a transition visit on this Thursday.
If we're still in lockdown, how do I get the materials she needs to be able to start. How do I do this teaching thing while also working.
Panicccccc
I'd start by saying that you're not gonna be alone. It's a pandemic and nothing is going to be "normal" for a while yet. Just deal with things as they come and explain everything to the teacher(s). I'm sure they'll be understanding and work with you.
