I'm inclined to think the one thing sucking the fun out of the isekai genre right now, is that everything isn't just so formulaic. It's that it's the same formula for so many series. MC ends up being OP as fuck and then they either go one of two rights. MC is just there being almost as dense as a blackhole or the MC is the "underdog," climbing to the top. Problem with the later one is that the MC being OP means you don't really see anything good done with the underdog story. IMO this is probably why Overlord and Slime did so way because they were like "fuck the underdog tale, the MCs are OP, no fucking point. Also they are more than just there being almost a blackhole that sucks anything interesting out of the series.

Anyways to take this back to Irregular At Magic School. IIRC that one also tried MC as underdog tale, but MC was really OP. It's not the only non-Isekai series with this half-assed setup, there are plenty and frankly it's a setup that doesn't work. Underdog only really works if the MC isn't OP in my opinion. Sure there are a ton with the whole "but society hates them!" but are they really underdogs when they can pretty much kick society's ass? Society being run by elitist pricks that have it out for the MC for really dumb fucking shit, can be an interesting story with or without the true underdog MC. It's just most series don't seem to run well with that either.

If you boil it down to just "protagonist must always win", yeah. There's no struggle in this though; no odds to overcome, no "in over their head" to deal with, it's just "this guy is awesome, will always be awesome, and we're lucky to be around him being awesome" and played completely straight. It's boring and bad, and then there's the incesty stuff on top of it.

The above leads to: A very common failure of Shonen manga is to introduce a battle system just to have their protagonist break the rules of it.

People want to write the next JoJo or Hunter x Hunter, but what they don't get is that those manga worked because nobody went outside the rules of the system, so readers had a reason to give a damn about it. Sure, you could get very powerful outliers, but the system itself stayed in place. Also, if you aren't skilled enough to write battles inside a complex system, maybe you should use a more simple one? RWBY has many, many other problems, but their rule system is a vastly oversimplified version of the Hunter x Hunter system and it works well enough.

Like, even Oda uses the japanese One Piece Wiki to keep his entire setting working.

Jojo doesn't give a fuck about going outside the rules it's established for powers, Araki's notorious for inventing powers to suit a single story and then discarding them immediately. It's as bad as anything about that. I don't think being a stickler for internal consistency is actually that big of a deal. People only start pulling on those loose threads when they're not suspending their disbelief and getting invested in the story for other reasons, like the story and character writing being boring or predictable.

I'm not sure if stands are really a ruleset, because the rule with stands is that stands can do basically anything. It's more like each stand is its own individual ruleset, and those rulesets are usually followed.

Yeah, JoJo is maybe not a good example since the ruleset itself is super simple to just not deal with that.

Oh, god I forgot about the incest. Christ, could I do with like none of that, but not like that ruined the series, given that it was already bad.

Yeah, that's probably huge issue with a ton of OP MC characters in many animes. We the audience don't see a clear system for how the rules work. Which means if they go for the underdog route, it just doesn't really work because there are no rules and it's just whatever the author says. So we can't really get invested in the story. It's just the MC always wins because of plot armor and plot cannon. It's also gets down to the MC loses or refuses to fight X because reasons. A define system that even the MC is bound to lets' the audience get why X isn't confronted or why X won. Also means that certain victories will seem more significant. For example, MC blessed with water power beats lightning blessed antagonist, where lightning trumps water. So either villain was really weak or MC had to pull at some creative tricks to bridge the gap. Plus, why MC is nearly on deaths door despite winning. It really does prevent some things from being so cheap, which is why Hunter X Hunter did so well. Yes, there are some cheap powers, but there that way for a reason and it's very satisfying when the MCs win despite an opponent having the edge because of their cheap power. Other stuff fails because the MC just seems cheap altogether and they win or lose an engagement based on what the author wants, while the actually game pieces each side have don't matter. Like the MC could be a literal chess pawn that moves straight to the opposing pawn in front of the king, takes it out and instantly checkmates the other side turn one, despite the fact that pawns can't do that and the opposing player could remove them with a few different plays.

I feel like One Piece generally does a pretty good job of having Luffy win because he is creative with his powers and good at coming up with new ways to use them.

Even when they brought Haki into the story as a more generic, normalized kind of power-up system, they still more or less use it as a way to enhance the already established power systems instead of overshadowing them.

And then we have fun moments like Luffy vs Eneru or Usopp vs Perona where the hero just bumblefucks his way into being the right person for the job and it manages to be satisfying in its own way despite being contrived/convenient.

Pretty much. There are some other examples of the genre, but none is as interesting and subversive as it is (even though Re:Zero is not an ideal in itself, it still has some flaws that I feel could have been fixed).

I really wish Mangaplus would sort its shit out. There are plenty of series that properly display two page spreads in their vertical viewer, which has larger image sizes compared to their horizontal reader, but for some reason some of the series split up two page spreads, which makes it useless.
