Threads sometime mark unread pages as read

TofystedethTofystedeth Registered User regular
I'm not entirely certain what causes this, but sometimes, the latest unread post marker will be a page past what I've actually read, so when I pick click on a thread from my bookmarks, it will skip a page.
I think possibly it might have to do with browsing on 2 different devices simultaneously?
For instance, just now I went to my latest unread post in the D&D election thread on page 28, which is correct. There is a 29th page as well, though I haven't navigated to it.
I then hit the bookmarks popup on my mobile device, and it now shows no unread posts in that thread. I didn't browse to the thread on that device, but could it somehow still be causing it to update the pointer?

I am also experiencing this. If I navigate back a page in the Election thread, it ticks off 40 posts as read, even though I haven't gone forward and read those posts yet.

I think I've been seeing this today. I typically read a page and then back out to bookmarks or sub-forum and then back into the thread. When I've done that today any thread with, for example, ten new posts with half of them on a new page then backing out marks all of the new page posts as read.

On my phone using the latest Chrome.

Having a similar issue recently. The #Latest of a thread will skip a page on me. Usually I just refresh and it'll go to the next unread page but lately it marks the next page as read and goes one page beyond that.

    Chrome, PC.

Can also report this. I don't think it's every thread, but I haven't found a pattern yet. Just noticed it on the Trump Lame Duck thread, and tbh it's probably for the best to skip pages there :P , but could be annoying somewhere else.

    Chrome, Windows PC.

The Coup thread on D&D is doing it to me now. I've fully read all the posts but it keeps telling me there are 285 new posts.

Edit: Interesting development. If I post in the thread, it starts getting marked as read when I visit it.

You are describing a different issue. This is a known problem, if you bookmark a thread before reading all the posts, you get this bug. The only way to resolve a bugged thread is to post in it. So, be careful not to bookmark threads before you've read them :D

The issue in this thread is about too many posts getting marked as read.

I do this weird thing where I only check a thread when it has a whole pages worth of posts - eg, 40+ - and prior to the Holiday Forum, it was working normally (eg, start at the top of the New page every time).

Now it's starting me halfway down the page, and marking the next page read. Like: if there are 63 unread posts in a thread, and I click the thread, it's only showing me 40 but marking 60 as read. There will only be 3 "unread" posts at that point.

Maybe there's a mismatch between "displayed" and "read"? Note I'm not exactly sure on either of those numbers, but I'll try to test it.

I notice this issue on mobile (Chrome, Android), impacts basically every thread (haven't found a thread it doesn't anyway), but don't have the same problem if I'm accessing the forums through my laptop (Chrome, OSX).
