So the difference in load speeds between the X1+SSD and the XS good, don't think it's massive though, just yet. Need to measure in more games.

One thing that is noticeable is the lighting differences.

If you're using a game with HDR, and it hasn't been updated, it may not work properly (brightness issues). Another thing I need to verify. Fortunately I have both boxes set up still so I can alternate between them kinda sorta.

So, the first Xbox 360 game I decided to try on Series X?

Killer is Dead, Suda51's famed cyborg-gigolo-assassin simulator.

    It does, in fact, work.

A pro-gamer move, to be sure. I merely have 60,000 MS Points.

I maxed out my allowed redemption limit by mid May, due to the COVID lockdown. Most major releases I've gotten this year I'd wait for the Rewards app to offer the 6000 bonus points on purchase and took advantage of pretty much every bonus point offer on TV and movies under $10 each.

So frustrating having my media feed be all “reasons to play this on your x, reasons to get the series x, etc”

And I’m like Im trying and literally can’t! stop yelling at me!

A lot of the “should you wait on getting a launch console” articles are especially hilarious cos it’s like, most people don’t have a choice!

omg Jay that is a Netflix documentary-type stare you got going on in that thumbnail. @[email protected]

"It was just a console, or so we thought? They wouldn't take it from him. Nobody would. He ate them."

I can see the camera just slowly panning the photo downward...

Just spent the past hour or so pouring over camera footage and omg I did not know how loud I was... or the weird things people do
Friday afternoon, minutes before I drove up, a neighbor dropped a bag in an alley, then proceeded to hide in said alley until I went into the house and crept out later. Then came back an hour later to get the bag.

There were flashlights on a balcony on an apartment... it's... so weird.

and so, having gone through the past few days of video that includes triggers off a bird across the street, people all the way up the block opening and closing their doors, someone turning their light on, someone turning their light off, and audio that was the game s I was playing... but not capturing someone walking up to the passenger side of my car, laying down and sawing at it... I think I am going to just have to not think about this anymore. The only time the car was ever fully obstructed was when the trash dudes came by, and that was obviously loud but the thought that they would have done it is just as absurd as how useless the recordings were.

bleh just... ugh. I guess it's good that I'm stuck in workathome purgatory so it's not like I need my car, but still. this is mildly annoying.

I was bummed my console hasn't shipped yet, so when I got an e-mail alert on my phone, I figured it wasn't it and to not get my hopes up. Then I saw it was from Amazon and I got excited until I noticed a ship date for February

Then I realized it was for the Transformers I just ordered two minutes prior and completely forgot about.

    The wait continues.

I should have said "a" haptic controller. I vastly prefer the Xbox controller to the playstation one (though I haven't used a PS controller since the PS3, so maybe the modern ones are more to my style.)

But seriously, I wish MS could just license that tech from Sony. If they both had it, it'd increase the chances of third parties implementing it, which is good for everyone.

It feels more like the 3DS to me. People will lose their shit over how good it is, it'll mostly be Sony that uses it, with third parties skipping it or doing poor implementations, and then it'll be done by the next generation. I have a strong suspicion you'll need a PS5 controller to play PS5 games on the PS6.

I am as sold on trigger haptics as I was the touch pad on controllers. That is, not at all.

That said the mic on the controller has always been a good idea for some easy voice commands. I get why Xbox didn’t do that tho —- trying sooo hard to distance themselves from Kinect and Cortana and Skype.

Ok, so before I left for work, I checked the delivery page for my Series X, and apparently it’s out for delivery again, latest update was 8am.

No card in the postbox, so it’s not been here yet.

I rang in, and my manager gave me another day off.

Or, in her own words - “Yeah sure, why the fuck not. Everyone else is off with Covid, so I don’t see the point in making you come in.”

She’s Irish, so you have to imagine it with accent.

So now it’s a repeat of yesterday, sitting on the back step, waiting.

At least I had some sleep last night, so don’t feel like absolute shite.

Its more that Microsoft are doing their best to make sure that haptics and gyro don't catch on, being the only major console platform that doesn't support them, thereby providing disincentives for multi-platform devs. They also basically control PC standards and could've easily slid such support into DX12U.

People seem to mention it as a legitimate game-changer... for the implementations that use it properly.
Gerstmann from Giant Bomb recently went out on their podcast to say that there have been instances of third party developers using it poorly to the point where it almost cheapens the experience.

I say that only time will tell, and patience for developers to figure out what works and what won't, and at the end of the day if developers accumulate enough experience to the point where the effect is transformative, it could very well translate across to other platforms in coming generations.

Microsoft's philosophy, as theorized within Digital Foundry's very cool interview on the Series S, is likely about ensuring that the next generations of gaming can be accessible across as many platforms as possible, thereby increasing the potential reach of accessibility of next-generation gaming to regions that may not necessarily have the income or interest to afford next-gen gaming otherwise. I think just like how the original Black Box XBO was designed in response to their experiences during the 360 era (ie. their phobia of billion-dollar overheating issues), the Series consoles are extremely conservative, gun-shy of extraneous gimmicks that may or may not pan out and add unnecessary cost to limit their potential market.

Been playing Battlefield 5 through EA Play via Game Pass and this seems...really good? I dunno if they improved it since launch, or my general inexperience with BF is showing, but this seems like a legit fun game so far. My buddy who was supposed to play with me bailed, but I'm having a decent time solo.

I remember people shitting over this game constantly while it was still early in its life cycle.

I don't know about BF5, but I imagine we are now in a time where any game, especially with some kind of significant online feature, will be shit on when it is released. Justified or not.

Being from EA only adds a candle to that cupcake.

The same was true of the early days of rumble. We remember early examples of it being used well - Star Fox 64, Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, all were transformative - and forget the bad implementations of it, of which there definitely were some (Duke Nukem 64 leaps to mind), as devs got used to incorporating it.

Having a few games that use HD rumble fairly well on the Switch, a Steam controller, and a phone with excellent haptics as well, I do feel it has the potential to be a meaningful step forward if used well. Doubtless Sony's first and second party PS5 releases will be fine examples of it, and then perhaps we'll see where it goes from there. MS demonstrated in the last gen that they were willing to update their controllers and add features (Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack), so it's possible it may eventually make its way to Xbox in due course.
