The real bizarritude is going to be the second week of December when they're probably going to try to halt California's certification.

I was trying to make a point that conservatives flee interacting with other people not like themselves so 538s point doesn’t strike me as particularly instructive about polling misses. Likewise, those that are in regular contact with people different than themselves (which is more likely to occur in high-population areas and mass transit) are more liberal. There are exceptions!

I was not making the point that people that are in rural areas are all antisocial Trumpers, nor was I making the point that people who are socially isolated are all rural Trumpers

Not really, because they couldn't read the Administrative Procedures Act. Virtually all of Obama's EPA regulations are still standing, just not being enforced due to drafting new regulations acting as a kind of injunction. As an example.

    Supposedly it has 10m users.

Which, some back of the envelope math: 27% (crazification factor) of Trump's vote total is ~20m people.

The whole 'if your neighborhood has sidewalks you are probably a Democrat' thing only really works because sidewalks are generally associated with population density, and that is also correlated to voting Democrat.

The isolation thing is wierd, but I kinda get it. By what metric are they using though? Still, in my experience yes, alot of the die hard Trump supporters are very socially isolated, or at least live in a very small social cocoon that's hard to see out of. Even my Mother, who is a goddamn dirty leftwing hippy spends too much time alone and ends up watching the poison that is Fox News, and repeating some of their lies. I think isolation combined with the complete saturation that right wing media has just created a really toxic environment of false narratives and this feedback loop, where lies turn into truths and down turns into up. It's a strange world.

People with zero social ties are generally people that are struggling with something. Mental or physical illness usually.

Suburbia is crazy isolating all by itself. I used to live in an apartment complex surrounded by those stupid housing developments where most of the streets are cul-de-sacs. It was quiet and safe and crushingly lonely.

Now I live in a pre-war neighborhood within walking distance of a downtown designed for foot traffic. My social circle has actually contracted because of the pandemic, and I still feel a lot less isolated than I did before I moved.

Yeah, this is basically the surge of folks after the election. I can't see it being all that active come March. For one, circular firing squads dampen enthusiasm, and this is the 'its all your fault' stage of election grief. For two, it's hard to own the libs when there are intentionally no libs. For three, most people don't go on Facebook for the political screeds, they go to see pictures of friends and family, organize/ invite people to events, and make memes. The whole point of it is the least favourite aspect of social media among normal folks. Self segregating yourself out of society is hard, and it's not like there is even anything interesting or birthright to keep people doing it like the Amish.

I agree. Being able to walk around and see other people does wonders for not feeling as isolated. Both of these things tend to be anathama to modern suburban development. It's tragic.

Speaking as someone who grew up in farm country, rural people can and do have social lives. Likewise, urban people can be socially isolated. There might be some correlation with population density, but it's not going to be high. And even if it were totally a function of local population density, you have to understand and control for that factor.

To make up some numbers, let's say that rural people are split 50/50 socially isolated/connected. Maybe the isolated people vote 80% Trump, and the connected people vote 60% Trump. If the connected people are more likely to answer polls, pollsters might think that rural people vote 65% Trump, and factor that number into their weightings. Then they're going to be surprised when rural people instead go 70% Trump on election day. To arrive at the correct number, pollsters would have to know that there's selection bias against the more Trumpy socially isolated people, and correct for that. You see a similar issue with education among white people, where white people with advanced degrees are more likely to be Dem than white high school dropouts, all else equal.

That's not to say that 538 is right, just that the theory could make sense.

The GOP is frantically waving their hands, jumping up and down, and shouting "Your honor, we have SEVERAL rats left we'd like to fuck!"

NEW: Only hours before the state is set to certify its election results, a bunch of Republicans have filed a lawsuit in the Minnesota Supreme Court to block it.

NEW: Republicans have filed a lawsuit in the Wisconsin Supreme Court to block certification of that state's election results.

Trump and his allies are 1-36 in court post-election.

NEW: Republicans are appealing their federal court loss in Georgia to the 11th Circuit.

Marc E. Elias is a lawyer very involved with voting rights, and while not a lawdog, does have a dog as a Twitter avatar.

Of course, all of this is so much sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I know a few things about the Minnesota election certification process, and this has no chance of succeeding.
