Hitman 2 (PS4) (note that all this can be played in the Hitman 3 engine and get you unlocks for Hitman 3 if you download the Hitman 3 Starter Pack for free)
Predator: Hunting Grounds (PS4)
Not a good month for me. I own All You Can Eat already on the Switch. Probably my wife and I's favorite game to play together.
This lets you play all of Hitman 2 in the Hitman 3 engine, which 1. lets you start earning unlocks for Hitman 3, 2. gives you a free level to play every month including ones from 1 and 3, 3. looks nicer, 4. has full PSVR support so you can play the game in first-person, and 5. has a native PS5 version which makes it run and look even better, unlike Hitman 2.
I'm amused by this new trend of the big companies saying "we're not showing this off, so don't ask". They're finally getting a handle on managing expectations

Gave up on waiting for the PS5 and finally fired up Spider-Man. Good granola, this is a fun time! Absolutely great web-slinging, and I like that they're leaning into how Peter's personal life is a never-ending dumpster fire.
Though there's far more pigeon molesting than I was prepared for.

Excited for that Thursday show off. Hoping for some new IPs and reveals.
The pre-orders are full of the modern crap that drives me crazy about modern games. The super expensive versions only come with a digital version and no disc, but still the steelbook for some reason. You only get access to the PS5 version if you buy the digital deluxe or one of the TWO different super mega versions. Yikes.
I ended up just grabbing the PS5 Steelbook Edition. No need for statues and all that garbage. The Steelbook has wonderful art.
I don't understand how you could play Demon's Souls and still feel this way. Yeah the fat guys weren't perfect but that game is sumptuously good-looking even now, almost a year later.

There are many poor art decisions that jar. Eating an incredibly delicious meal with a teaspoon of sand mixed in it. Lots of grit.
Really not a fan sorry. Fromsoft story telling is also in the art! They show not tell constantly. Its not something you get to remake and optionally change!
Bb is Fromsofts most compelling game visually. It tells so much important shit visually. I dont trust them with it.
Please make your own sexy games bluepoint! Or at the very least on games where the visuals arent so important to the lore so you can go ham!

Guess my complaining worked as by PS5 should be here tomorrow.
First early adopter casualty, right trigger went super loose so the slightest touch started fucking up games. Bought another one while the current goes back into repair for up to 30 days because of covid.
It’s interesting I got my ps5 rma back today after a couple weeks which wasn’t as bad as I expected but.. according to their repair notes they replaced literally every internal component and sent it back in the same shell so uh… why take weeks to repair it and not just send me a refurb while you repair that one like every other console manufacturer Sony? It’s kinda baffling
Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.
Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.
I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
— Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment
I get that Sony wants to try their best to normalize the extra $10 on current gen games, but this would have gone over better if they only did it for actual current gen games like Returnal and Rift Apart.

HZD didn’t even have a PS4 version planned originally. I think they only made a PS4 port because they just haven’t been able to manufacture enough PS5s.

I’ve finally reached the point where I would like to purchase a PS5 but it’s still nearly impossible to find and I really don’t want to pay a scalper. I don’t really have the time to hit refresh a million times while waiting for a new stock drop. So not really sure what to do, but i’m sick of 2 min load times on assassin’s creed and my PC is older than Methuselah so my gaming options are starting to run low.

How long do you think the port took to make? You are assuredly wrong about this, just based on lead time.

Do you have any idea how long a port from a game designed for next generation hardware to current generation hardware takes? Like it is easier as the architecture hasn’t fundamentally changed, but it is non-trivial.

Is this statement meant to agree with me or not? I don't think there was enough time between witnessing the Ps5 short stock and then making the port from scratch. It was planned all along.

I just gave up and got a new laptop with HDMI out instead. Maybe next year PS5's will be available to buy alongside PSVR 2.

It's a huge pain in the ass but certainly not impossible, assuming you didn't make decisions that would preclude you from doing so (e.g., I bet porting R&C Rift Apart would be...challenging). I would be surprised if HZD2 wasn't always a dual-gen title, though.
Decisions like actually using the hardware? If they built it for the PS5 from the off, the data load requirements for the PS4 version would be insane.
Look at the pop-in CP2077 gets. That's what you get when you try to run something designed for an SSD on a HDD.
(Not the only reason CP was a dumpster fire by a long shot, but it's on there)
My completely un-sourced opinion is that Forbidden West was probably a ps4 title to start, got converted to PS5 when the dev timeline got long enough, then converted back to cross-gen when it became apparent they were supply constrained on the 5, and could still (hopefully) get the game to run like not-shit on a base ps4.
I would think that if it was a ps5 title only to start with there would be no easy way to go back down to the 4.
Really, really enjoying the Insomniac's first Spider-Man. Just loads of good stuff. But I'm about 70% through the game, and it seems weirdly light on Spider-baddies so far. I mean, Shocker? Screwball? The guy has a colorful rogues gallery and they went with them?
*gets to The Raft level*
...I stand corrected. Well played.

Don't you know that it is against the law to do a Spider-Man game and not make Shocker the first kinda joke/easy to take down villain. :P

It's a real clickbaity title, but the channel itself is some fantastic deep dives into game programming (specifically the crazy shit they did for the Genesis). And the actual video is more along the lines of the logistics of how it possibly could be done. With the conclusion being "I think you could pull off the same trick on a PS3, just obviously not as slick".
Rumor is that there were first-party PS4 games towards the end that were *pushed* to PS5 because PS4 that gen won so handily. Whether that meant the PS4 version would be dropped is still an open question. Just because it could run decently on PS4, doesn't mean that Sony would want it to show up. They have done practically zero cross-gen releases between PS3 and 4 even as many 3rd parties did. Presumably one main point of exclusives is to sell your new console and cross-gen doesn't do that so well.
I don't think Sony really wanted to be supporting PS4 this long, they likely did want to go all-in on PS5, witness how jacked their cross-gen support is compared to Microsoft. However the enormous pandemic demand means too many actively playing Sony fans are still stuck on PS4. On the other hand, they clearly don't think most of their exclusives are making them enough money, given all the PC ports, so maybe they would've released these on PS4 regardless.
