I was always kind of meh about Vader until Rebels. Everyone would go on about what a terrifying villain he is but the books and comics always failed to capture it for me.
Seeing him in motion, fighting a Jedi and padawan single handedly, helped a lot.

    Even "Vader Down" comic?

Vader down is too cartoonishly over the top with Vader and his silly new droids for me really take him seriously in it. Just too much.

There's been some real good Vader-as-horror-villain stuff

every little detail about The Hallway Scene is fantastic
    The ending of Fallen Order
His appearances in Rebels, both dunking on the main crew and also his fight with Ahsoka

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

I could never get into Clone Wars, so Ashoka's still this annoying insert character that Filoni drops into his shows to show off how badass she is then whisks her away before anything bad can happen.

    Rebels spoilers
I respected the character a hell of a lot more when Filoni killed her off against Darth Vader. The time_travel!retcon was weak sauce.

...I should add that I'm excited to see her again if/when she shows up in any future Star Wars media, because 1) lots of people like her, which will make them excited/happy and 2) the Filoni-verse is probably the best thing that's happened to Star Wars since the OT.

The thing is that Filoni very clearly had Ashoka’s fate figured out when he wrote season 2 so even if that particular trope is an asspull, it is an asspull that was planned and not a retcon.

    Ashoka is no Jedi.

According to Order 66 she is, and that order comes straight from the emperor.

And that dude's killed a lot of jedi, so if anyone's an authority on that subject it should be him!

Order 66 including Maul and Ahsoka is totally due to what he knew and how she could have redeemed Anakin if they meet up early enough after his fall.

Ahsoka is not a Jedi, by her own definition.

However, her definition is based on prequel-era Jedi, who were pretty garbo, which is why she left.

In other eras she might have been considered exemplary.

Rebels similarly starts with an annoying kid character, but he grows up fast. If you can make it through the first half of season 1 you're golden. The animation style also takes a bit getting used to. Everything bin space looks great from the beginning but the character models always feel a bit awkward. Maybe it's just because (almost) no-one in Rebels wears any kind of robes, dresses or any flowy clothes at all.

In fairness for Rebels, I've already seen the bit where Ezra force chokes someone and then when asked "Did Kanan teach you that" he just gives this look of "Don't ask about what you don't want answers to". So I'm aware where this series goes after a while and I'm keen to see if these people will turn up in say, Mandalorian at some point.

What he does is actually more messed-up.
He mind tricks a walker pilot into fighting a squad of troopers, then when they've won, he has them walk off a cliff.

Am I surprised by a guy who trained at the hand of a flawed master who was completely focused in vision rather than popular appeal has a better handle on epic filmmaking then a guy whose contribution to filmmaking is "I wonder what this is about"?
    No I am not.

2 things that Thanksgiving drunk me is thinking
The first is that no matter how good the mando is , Dave.filoni already won star wars with the siege of mandalor and I cant believe that it was only this year this dropped
I am continually amazed by how good the mando is, and how good jon faveraus writing is on it, considering how absolutely soulless lion king was.

Part of me is upset theres no new star.wars this year but another part of me is onboard with taking years to.make those flicks
    Make them special.

I need Ezra and Thrawn forced to team up out in the middle of nowhere holding off the Yuuzhan Vong or that AI army from the EU or whoever with whatever they can scrape together. Maybe some other EU Jedi that're not dead like, uh, Quinlan Vos is still alive right?

Bonus points for serious "Thrawn is learning about how Jedi and the Force work and that's like his only weakness in the past this might be a bad idea" energy.

Not getting the Force was basically half of OG Thrawns weakness. His other was attributing none of his enemies success to luck, versus skill.

Which in theory sounds like an actual sound strategy for running a galaxy wide war, but when you have verifiable and demonstratable proof there is an incredibly powerful mystical energy out there, when random shit keeps going wrong in a few very specific goals - no matter how sound your planning and strategy - maybe it's time to step back and consider that maybe the universe itself doesn't want you to succeed.

It pays off in later seasons, and there are some gems like when the Grand Inquisitor shows up and when

    S1 End Spoilers
Tarkin shows up and has at least 2 recurring villains executed for gross incompetence and generally doesn't play games with the crew of the Ghost. And he sets up
Vader coming in to clean house in the Season 2 opener, which was our first stop on the 'No Vader is not just Mickey Mouse with a lightsaber' rehabilitation tour.

Before I wrote my comment above, I hadn't got to the point where Tarkin turned up.

When he executed the Hogan's heroes Imperial stand ins, I knew they were changing the tune of the show from that point.

Edit: And please tell me I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Klink and the Sergeant with those two guys.
