I'd like a 5900x, but that seems unlikely to happen ever this year. I'm trying to decide if I want to just grab a 5800x next time they're in stock at Microcenter, or just grab a 3600x for now to build out the whole computer (without GPU) and grab a 58 or 5900x in the future sometime. With the console core/thread counts being what they are, I figure if I can match or exceed that I'm golden for a good long while.
Do I have to care about motherboard VRMs if I don't want to fuss around with overclocking? Is there a good resource for seeing if RAM will clear a Noctua
air cooler?
Spica enjoys the butt-warming features of the current machine and can often be found here when it's on:
One of our cats does this all the time now as well. I ordered a mesh filter for the top vent since I didn't want cat hair getting into the AIO radiator lol.
@expendable I have an NH-D15 noctua air cooler and with two fans I only had 32mm of clearance for RAM. This completely throws out any and all RGB RAM from being an option, and if I wanted my second fan I'd have to get a different kit than what I have.
Some people have been able to move the front fan up to provide more clearance, but this heavily depends on your case and how wide it is. You can also switch out the provided fan with a smaller one, but that'll still block the RGB on your memory kit from being viewable.
In the end I just skipped the front fan entirely and I've had no problem with thermals.

That helps a bunch, thanks!
I definitely am not planning on RGB RAM. I went with the windowless Meshify 2 as well, so it sounds like I'll be alright. I just want new, faster, quiet, and cool.
Having owned a 2600 and impulse upgraded to a 3800X last year, i can confidently say a 3600 will serve quite well for many people waiting for a higher end 5XXX.
Got most of it assembled, making a Win 10 USB install stick now, but I'll wait until tomorrow to move over the 3080, RAM and SSDs because I am le tired.

Heyya PC thread folks! I'm finally planning on retiring my workhorse gaming PC that was pretty hot back in, uh... 2013. I haven't really kept up to date on the state of hardware these days... can anyone take a look at this prebuilt system and point out any obvious warts I may be missing? I'm aware that I'd be paying a premium to have someone else put it together, but with vid card supply issues and all that I'm willing, and the price on this thing looks pretty good to me.
Processor :: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Processor (6x 3.6GHz/32MB L3 Cache)
Processor Cooling :: iBUYPOWER 120mm RGB Liquid Cooling System
Memory :: 16GB [8GB x 2] DDR4-3200MHz ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D41 RGB
Video Card :: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT - 6GB (VR-Ready)
Storage :: 512GB ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD
Motherboard :: ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS
Power Supply :: 600 Watt - Thermaltake 80 PLUS Gold
The only thing that really jumps out at me is the power supply, 600 watt seems low, easy to upgrade after the fact though and I'm comfortable with that.
I'm also super unfamiliar with liquid cooling. My only real experience was waaaay back in like 2010ish a buddy of mine had nothing but trouble with leaking and scale buildup, I can only assume that the tech has improved quite a lot since then. Do they use a special liquid, or distilled water or something? And how often do you need to change the liquid? That sort of thing.
Well, after browsing the last few pages I’m discouraged, but here we go.
I have a 5 year old PC that is mostly serving me well, but it’s starting to struggle a bit and I’m thinking about an upgrade. I have two goals/questions. What would it take to just upgrade this so that games like total war hammer would have faster turn times and not chug on big battles? Are there any prebuilt systems recommended? I don’t really mind paying a premium to not have to hunt for parts.
In the second option I’ll give my current machine to my son, so he’ll be happy. Maybe I’d consider up to $2k?

Since I don't have enough fans right now - it's better to suck air in so there's positive pressure than fans sucking air out, right?
Having at least 1 of each is preferable over neither of either.
After that, intake is always preferable.
As explanation: negative pressure (more in than out) means incoming airflow for the most part will be coming in where you direct it, ideally going through a dust filter so less dust gets in your setup.

I built a system very similar to that. Same cpu and gpu. just different mobo, ram and ssd brands. No liquid cooling though.
It's a solid foundation although you'll prob want to upgrade the psu when you decide to upgrade the gpu. As is, the 600w should be fine though.

Yeah, I read that somewhere. Is it worth trying to upgrade the CPU in this case? I actually tried overclocking it using intel’s tool, but the benchmark numbers were going down :bigfrown:

Depends on the motherboard/chipset. But from my experience with Intel, it's unlikely. You might be able to upgrade the CPU to something a few percent faster from 6 months to a year after that CPU came out. But it'll still be overpriced for what you get.
@Pemulis I think your only upgrade would be what a 7700k on that motherboard? That won't be hardly any improvement. I went from a 6700k to an AMD 3900x and it was like night and day when it came to CPU heavy games and applications.
Be patient and order parts when they come available. I wish I would have kept that extra 3900x that I accidently ordered last year. I could have helped out one of you or become a villian and sold it for $Texas.

16-32 GB of RAM

750-850 watt Gold PSU (don't cheap out here, plan to spend at least $100, likely more)
But above all, recognize that there ain't shit in stock anywhere, so don't break down and buy from ebay

@Pemulis You could get cheaper when building your own, but it does take some skill to put them together yourself.
I would suggest waiting for some parts to become available and read up on some building how tos on Youtube.

I had a 5900X in cart, all my payment details in place, and Best Buy kept saying "Please verify your account with a code", and every code they sent me "Sorry that code is expired"...by the time I got through they were all gone.
Once again all this "anti-bot" crap is doing is making it so real customers that can actually get one in cart can't actually get one, while the bots just waltz on through.

With tariffs coming down the pipe it's difficult to even say
5800X - $449
CPU Cooler - ??, let's say $100
RTX 3070 - $599
RAM - DDR4 3000 $140
ASUS Prime - $150
Corsair CM750 - $100
SSD - $110
If you include case and case fans it's about $300 markup
The 5600X might chop off a decent amount of that cost, and as such you may be able to further go down with a B550 motherboard instead of X570

I haven't seen a single purchase bot that can get through Best Buy's schtick; you had some back luck and that sucks =/

Was it a "log in to your account" code?
I was logged in to my account, so I have no idea what the code was for. First they texted it to me, then claimed it was expired less than 30s later. Than emailed me four different ones, all came back as "expired" despite getting them within 60 seconds. No idea why they even needed to verify. I was logged in and have bought things from them recently.

Theoretically you could build a system cheaper. But not today, definitely not tomorrow, and probably not for months unless you’re willing to put in a *lot* of time scrabbling for stock.

Thank you! I’ll weigh this and see if I can get spousal approval :biggrin:
I was logged in to my account, so I have no idea what the code was for. First they texted it to me, then claimed it was expired less than 30s later. Than emailed me four different ones, all came back as "expired" despite getting them within 60 seconds. No idea why they even needed to verify. I was logged in and have bought things from them recently.
Theoretically you could build a system cheaper. But not today, definitely not tomorrow, and probably not for months unless you’re willing to put in a *lot* of time scrabbling for stock.
And my time is worth more than that markup
