I forgot how good Futurama is just right off the bat. I don't remember when it starts to tank but the first season or two at least are gold.

Finally watched season two of His Dark Materials. It had a slow start, but once it got going it held my attention. It was bugging me how I just couldn't pin down Lyra's mother's motivation, so I had to look up what happens to her in the book series.

    Turns out,
    she just straight up loco

And after reading abit more about the HDM universe, that's some wacky stuff coming up in the show.

Futurama did peter out when it got revived. Seasons one through four are still amazing. I can't think of a weak one off the top of my head. The later seasons got weird. They had a handful of gold episodes. But the final final finale was perfect.

I feel like there was a lot more actively trying to recapture things that people loved in the original run when they came back. a lot of it was still good but like it felt very clear that like the baby bender episode was going for a seymour reaction.

I honestly don't know if that's a fair thing to judge them or not. tons of things do that, but they just kind of felt more aware of their pedegree and working to recapture those bits than when we first got them, if that makes sense?

I think revived Futurama works because Futurama was always largely just about having fun, even though it has a few emotional cutting episodes that stand out, the vast majority is silliness. So even though it’s never amazing there’s a few episodes I still quote lines from and I’d say it was worth the revive

Unlike something which I felt actively ruined my feelings about the show like the arrested development revive

the futurama revival was more uneven than the original run but I do think the highs were a bit higher

    She's not very complicated.
She wants power and to be on the strongest, winning side. That's it.

Even her desire to get Lyra back is a lie. She just wants to possess what she thinks is hers.

I'm really looking forward to a certain speech describing her from the third book. I hope they keep it in verbatim.
Corruption and envy and lust for power. Cruelty and coldness. A vicious probing curiosity. Pure, poisonous toxic malice. You have never from your earliest years shown a shred of compassion or sympathy or kindness without calculating how it would return to your advantage. You have tortured and killed without regret or hesitation; you have betrayed and intrigued and gloried in your treachery. You are a cess-pit of moral filth.

I do not recommend Behind Her Eyes on Netflix. Strong writing almost all the way through, and then it faceplants when everyone decides to stop making sense.
I called the astral-projection body-swap twist about halfway through the second episode but I thought they were going to do something a lot more interesting with it. Rob just decides to start being a psychopath at the end of the flashbacks, Louise astral projects from the doorway of a burning house so that she can hover uselessly over Adele's body and get mind-merked, and David - a psychiatrist - is apparently completely oblivious to his 'girlfriend' suddenly changing personality and having memory lapses.

Carnivale needs an asterisk next to it, imo

partly because the show was cancelled; so there's no real conclusion. This particular case didn't bug me too much.

and partly because his plans for season 3 set off some warning bells in my head

I've started Legion and I'm 4 episodes in. It seems very cool.

They just actually described Cary/Kerry's thing, which is a weird cool mutant power that I hadn't seen before. I still don't really understand how it works.

They dig into it a little deeper as the series goes on, and every time they do the weirdness and coolness escalates.

Legion is very good. That managed to slip between the cracks of the larger comics media and get properly weird.

I finished my rewatch of The Good Place and was looking for a new show to get into.
I chose Alice In Borderland because a friend said it was good. I watched the whole season, but only grudgingly by the end. I’d describe it as a mix of Battle Royale, Black Mirror, and Saw. It just ended up being miserable but I wanted to see what happened at the end, not sure I’ll come back for future seasons.
After that, again on recommendations from friends, I started watching Space Force. It is not good. I can see the jokes they’re making and I know where I’m supposed to be laughing but it’s just not doing it for me. I think I watched five episodes and I don’t really feel compelled to watch the rest.

After two stinkers in a row, decided I’m just gonna rewatch Justified again.

Chernobyl is a great mini series that plays it a bit fast and loose with the detailed facts but gets the broad strokes correct. The production value is astounding.

I need to go back and try it again. During an early phase of the library reopening, I spent hours a day at a greeter desk talking to a few people an hour, and plowed through Midnight in Chernobyl in like three days. So I was primed to catch the factual errors and in no emotional state to deal with them gracefully when I tried to watch the show the following week.

the wildest thing about Chernobyl is that it was, to my mind, a pretty accurate and severe indictment of hierarchy and careerism, but everyone watched it and said "golly I'm sure glad I don't live in a communism"

then like six months later, covid!
