    Oh god

I just watched a clip of Schumer announcing the trial and he says the Senate will need to decide if Donald Trump “incited the erection...insurrection [quick “yeesh” look] against the United States.”
I regret to inform you that Chuck Schumer just said ‘erection’ instead of ‘insurrection’ on the Senate floor

Looking at this list of LGBT congresspersons, it is very notable that there aren't any recent openly out Republicans

So maybe Graham does have reason to fear outing.

ever since the LCR went full Trump, I think serious LGBT conservatives have abandoned the party entirely. Very few gay Republicans remain.

Sarah Longwell is the most prominent (non-elected) out Republican I can think of.

She fled the party screaming and is one of the founders of the Lincoln Project.

Correction. It’s now February 9th so that Biden can have his full cabinet before it begins.

The capitulation begins. I fail to see how one impacts the other outside of Mitch using this as a stalling tactic.

My only hope here is that the extra two weeks gives us ample time to tie the actions of Flynn, Jones and other asshats to Trump and create an uncontroversial narrative for removal and barring from office.

And it would impact scheduling committee meetings to provide oversight of appointees before their full vote.

I don't see what the GOP really got from the delay, like the initial delay on impeachment granted us corporations pulling out and more damaging information coming forward. I imagine something similar will happen here.

Ehh. I feel that nothing is gained by delaying it to February 8th. Mitch asked for February, Schumer said Tuesday... now it’s February.

Without context, it looks like Mitch won this round.

Mitch also said he wanted to shut down the senate which he's not getting to do and we're still holding the impeachment trial earlier than he wanted. Stop buying into McConnels own fucking spin.

Well you could read the linked article before dropping a hot take.

The main issue seems to be that splitting time between Trial and other things would require unanimous consent from all senators, which you sure as hell aren't getting from the GoP. Given that situation a ton of dems signaled concern about derailing cabinet stuff and covid relief stuff. I'm not even convinced they can get a covid bill past republicans in time, as they need to at minimum make a show of trying to negotiate before blowing up the filibuster.

i also think focusing on getting elements of Biden's agenda in motion before getting bogged down in a trial that is still entirely unlikely to accomplish anything is good optics

they could split their time between both but if anyone thinks the media will cover anything other than the trial they're dreaming and it is vitally important Democrats be shown to be actually governing and addressing problems

the fact of the matter is the impeachment trial at this point is pure theater, and really it always was but i got yelled at for suggesting that three weeks ago

    Allegedly a voice of reason.

The Senate is not going to successfully convict, whether the trial starts Tuesday or starts in June, no matter how much evidence you dig up. There are not 17 Republican Senators with the stones to do the right thing and weather the hatred of the new GOP base. So if that's the case, why wait?

the only way we get there is if something more damning than we already know comes out. it's pretty hard to imagine what that might be given nothing so far has been enough to overcome their cowardice

the only reason to do the trial quickly is to fail as soon as possible and move on from it, which is not the worst idea either

unless there is enough of a consensus on the idea you can still disqualify on a majority vote without a successful conviction

    Allegedly a voice of reason.
