If we're going to talk about what feels gross, maybe its the woman helping to kill something so critical to women's rights as fixing worker poverty.
Disagreeing with her politics is not a blanket excuse to lob any sexist pejoratives you feel like her way.
Its not sexist or even strictly speaking a pejorative. Its a sarcastic criticism of her and corporate America's brand of class blind feminism in which we're supposed to celebrate the achievements of women who make it into the upper eselchons of society and when they get there keep perpetrating the same injustices all the people they left behind still face.
We could just call her a class traitor I suppose.
Better than being sexist!
Go with that!
Tbf, I don't know her upbringing / background well enough to know if her votes are in solidarity with her class or not so we might have to debate the accuracy of it being actual class treason.
I actually don't care about the optics so much as I don't think the senate deserves to eat cake
The Senators probably not.
But the clerks and staffers that have been working all night?
Sure why not.
No I wish them discomfort and bad days too
What exactly did the Assistant Legislative Clerk of the United States Senate do to merit your ire?
Work for the senate
Yes, good forbid they take a job they think will work to improve society instead of sitting on the sides whining about how everything isn't perfect therefore it is all evil.
doin' a lot of guesswork about people's intentions here, which don't actually matter anyway
If their intentions don't matter, then why are we wishing harm on the senate staffers? Based on what?
Can we all just agree to avoid the gendered terms in this thread for the sake of moving the hell on regardless of our opinions on them? GST if you need to have it out maybe? Also cake is funny regardless of actual context.
The part I care about is "people are voting against the interests of the people they legally represent."

No, it is a very relevant insult. The mockery is for the celebration of women who use their power to oppress others. For example, Marissa Mayer was the pejorative #girlboss when she was CEO of Yahoo
Do asshole bosses who happen to be men get their special gendered insult, too?
It doesn't matter, the context of doing something as a woman and as a man is completely different. This is like, "why don't we have a men's history month?" is a question that completely misses the point
I think it says a lot that you read this comment as disagreeing with you
This is not the first time recently that someone has tried to imply I'm a bad person with, like, this exact comment. What is it actually contributing to the thread? What value do you think you're adding here?
If the point of your post is "I have cleverly figured out you are sexist," just PM me next time.
Anyways
altlat was the one who first brought up "hey let's not be sexist." I assume their post I replied to was supposed to be interpreted in the same vein? Although I guess it could be read the opposite. So my post was a continuation of their point.
Sen Dan Sullivan left for Alaska on a family emergency so the Republicans are now down a vote. Unfortunately I guess that doesn't matter since it isn't enough if Manchin switches on issues.

yeah, they're called a dick
They might be a dick, but that's a generic word to describe any man who is an asshole. It doesn't mean an asshole boss who is a man, or an asshole guy who is in a position of power.

If Manchin's the only holdout wouldn't that mean it'd be Harris tiebreaking? I'm fuzzy on the margin.

It means Harris wouldn't be necessary. Also, they could try to lobby Murkowski or Romney or Collins to no avail.

Pretty sure that'd mean it's 50-49 rather than 51-49 if Sullivan was there.

If Manchin is the only Dem to abstain from voting, that would make it 49-49, and Harris tiebreaks.
If Manchin votes with the GOP, Dems lose regardless of Sen. Sullivan being there or not (51-49 or 50-49)

It would have been 50-50 with Harris tiebreaking. With Sullivan gone it would be 50-49 or 49-50 so no ties but ....

Only if he abstains. Then it would be 49-49 and Harris would be involved again.

Oh right. Sigh. So you'd need to be 2 down before 1 defector reestablishes a tie.
Hmm is working for the Senate worse than being a prison guard, missile engineer, or hedge fund broker? Arguing about it for several pages is the only way to be sure
Christ almighty, Manchin. Just fucking christ. I remain amazed that people can honestly belive that folks in need should suffer so much. Not even asking for more for his state, just being an intransigent asshole. Gotta prove how much of a hardnosed pragmatist he is by hurting people.
Manchin reneging on the extended unemployment insurance is some real stupid shit
Anyone know what's going on with this?
Last thing I can figure out from the news is they've basically stalled the vote-a-rama as they try to get Manchin's dumbass to stop trying to cut the unemployment payments even more. Manchin really wants them to only be $300 and not $400, so they negotiated the $300 but extending to september and with the tax ememption except now he's trying to go with a Republican plan to do $300 but now ending earlier in July. And then it seems like nothing is happening now. Is that it so far?
Supposedly Manchin is doing a thing with Portman that might have Republican support, which is just the stupidest of stupid things by the moderate dems here.
Compromises with the GOP tend to end up as the "Universal Healthcare and shooting immigrants on sight bill" because the GOP like to put stuff in that would cause half the Democrat base to hate them for passing it and the other half to hate them for not passing it.

I think it would in theory let him vote yes on Portman's measure which will fail, and then yes on caper's measure which would succeed? But I'm not a senate senatarian?
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
I'm curious what the White House response will be, considering with the announcement of the compromise they were pretty happy, and now it seems like Manchin simply lied to Biden's face.
"Sen. Maggie Hassan wouldn’t answer when I asked her why she voted against an effort to raise wage to $15. “I have long been supportive of increasing the minimum wage,” she said.
I asked her what was wrong with this one, and her aide interjected and said she’s late for a meeting"
"Hassan’s office sends me this statement from her. “People who work 40 hours a week should be able to get by and shouldn’t be living at or below poverty level. I’ve long supported raising the minimum wage to $12 an hour and I’m open to $15 an hour."
"“We need a path forward that is appropriate for workers and small businesses and could actually pass,” she said in a statement"

I was in the "I don't really give a shit whether you criticize Manchin or not cause at least we're getting extended UI" but if he actually does this and retrenches the UI then he can just as well fuck off
We will still get extended UI, just only until July.
Which is worse, except compared to the whole thing failing.
The more frustrating thing is why he changed his mind since this passed Feb 4.
I think they should just call the bluff to be honest. I want them to show that Ron Paul and Mike Lee and Tommy Tuberville will vote for a UI extension. If Manchin was swayable it seems like it would have happened by now
UI expires in 10 days so they'll almost have to pass as is unless its very egregious. Cutting a month and 100/week off sucks but better than not having it
An expiration in July means that, based on how long these bills are taking to pass, they'll need to start working on the next bill again the moment that this one passes.

Conference Committee is rare enough that there's no real meaningful average for how long it takes, but under a week seems conceivable given it's contours and the prohibition of amendments.
Manchin's theatrics are entirely because he finally has real, genuine power and very much wants that to be acknowledged, everyone and everything else be damned
He is an absolute shithead and Schumer should absolutely call his bluff and pull his committee seats after this
The rest of the Democrats need his vote on a host of other issues after this as well.
I mean sure but he's not going to give it to them so

Also, also, I haven't seen clear reporting on if the House will just pass this clean or if they're going to Conference Committee it.

It...Might be easier to get Romney on board at this point than Manchin.

can you elaborate on this, because it doesn't make any sense to me. what does "this one" mean, there's only one federal minimum wage
