I got my AZ shot at a pharmacy here in BC, and I didn't even get a real vaccination card, just like, the kind of print out stickers you get with a standard prescription. However, socialized medicine and all, it's in my digital health records, that I can access on the web or by phone. It's a minor miracle that it works, given health IT in our province seems to be a complete shit show.

Huh, sweet, I just checked and I can log in to my health records and download/print a PDF of my vaccination card.

Already done. The pharmacy that sponsored the vaccine events is being kind enough to mail us the replacement cards because their nearest location is an hour away.

My grandparents have been fully vaccinated since mid-March, I've been fully vaccinated for over a week and now, finally, my sister and mother have gotten vaccinated as well.

My sister was just procrastinating, by my mother? I was convinced she would never get vaccinated. She kept making excuses, listens to right-wing media all the time and so my assumption was that there would be an endless series of new excuses until she caught it. But nope, she's vaccinated now!

People are often unwilling to risk their lives when they want others to risk theirs. It’s like how people who have gotten the MMR vaccine try to convince other people not to vaccinate their children.

Went to the grocery store today and our Meijer had prominent signs at the entrance 'masks are not required for fully vaccinated customers'. I was masked of course.

It made me very proud of my area, probably 95% of the people I saw were wearing masks. I'm sure it will drop as time goes on, and our area was hit pretty hard, but seeing people - most likely vaccinated - still masking up made me feel pretty good.

We can't do anything different until either the vaccine is released for under 12 or next February when our kid turns 12. Most likely this will be resolved by the end of summer, but we aren't doing anything different because of that.

I think it's more helpful if you try to only have adverse reactions while still in the monitoring period. Otherwise, like, what's the point?

So, about that idea that letting vaccinated people go maskless might encourage people to get vaccinated:
    https://morningconsult.com/2021/05/18/cdc-mask-guidance-comfort-poll/
Unvaccinated adults are roughly twice as likely as their vaccinated peers to say they’re OK going maskless at school, a religious gathering, sports game, concert, work conference, shopping mall or gym.

    Oops.

    The good news:
Fifty-one percent of unvaccinated adults, for example, are comfortable resuming their normal routines without donning a mask, compared with 34 percent of vaccinated adults.

So the actual impact will be blunted.

We're working on getting back to more normal. My sister is visiting from DC and we went to several stores and lunch and everywhere we went was mask optional.

Nine members of the New York Yankees have tested positive for COVID. They were all fully vaccinated at the time of receiving a positive test.
Nine members of MLB’s New York Yankees who are vaccinated have tested positive for Covid with “breakthrough” infections.

The people who have tested positive include second baseman Gleyber Torres, pitching coach Matt Blake, third base coach Phil Nevin, first base coach Reggie Willits and five members of the Yankees’ traveling staff, the team said in a release.

“Fortunately, they’re all you know doing quite well,” Aaron Boone, Yankees manager, said Sunday.

Seven of the infected members are asymptomatic and two have mild symptoms.
And while the Yankees situation seems like a higher percentage than the general population, it’s actually likely that the CDC’s numbers are missing a lot of breakthrough cases happening in the country. That’s because testing is way down, especially for vaccinated people, says Zach Binney, an epidemiologist at Oxford College of Emory University. The CDC says that fully vaccinated people do not need to get tested following a known exposure.

The Yankees, on the other hand, “are a bit of a unique atmosphere, because all of their personnel were still being tested regularly, so that’s why we uncovered each and every case that occurred, whereas in another environment we probably wouldn’t have done that,” Binney says. (All the cases were discovered during routine daily testing.)

This is interesting for a number of reasons:
    1. The fact that they are infected but mostly asymptomatic means that the vaccines are really kicking ass and doing exactly what they're supposed to.
    2. The fact that they got infected at all, though, when the team is over 85% vaccinated, means that there's a good possibility the infections were passed among individuals who are infected AND vaccinated. There might've been an unvaccinated super spreader, so it's hard to say. But there's a chance here that the virus is spreading between individuals despite vaccination.
    3. There's a good point being made about how most vaccinated people aren't being tested, and that the Yankees are a very special case. Otherwise it might never have been caught at all.

All of that adds up to: Bad news if you're not vaccinated. Hardly news if you are vaccinated. Here's to hoping the stragglers get their jabs soon.

I've got two five and under, and I'm just trying to keep in mind the falling case rates in my area and larger number of people being vaccinated, including starting with kids down to 12 soon here, which will mean way less covid circulating.

Nothing we can really do until the trials for vaccines for little kids finish up. Moderna has a trial in six month old plus that started in March, and there are a range of trials at other age ranges from five to six years up going on.

I think niblings is the more common variation of the word for nieces and nephews.

Anyhow, we're at 50% total population with one dose now in BC, and kids down to 12 are going to start getting shots, and can get shots when a parent does, or you can take all your kids to one appointment. Pretty nice system it seems.

    Edit: This part is interesting:

Information for youth 12 to 17
Getting vaccinated is easy. You can go to your appointment by yourself, make plans with friends to get appointments at the same time or ask a parent or trusted adult to help you.

Under the Infants Act, you can give consent as a mature minor to receive health care, like getting a vaccine.

Basically, kids can get vaccinated regardless of what their parents might think.

On May 13, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced the Buckeye State’s lottery, in which residents ages 18 and up who receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine can enter to win a $1 million cash prize in one of five weekly drawings. Vaccinated residents ages 12 to 17, meanwhile, can enter a lottery to win one of five full-ride college scholarships, which would cover a full four-years’ worth of tuition, room and board, and books to any Ohio state college or university.

Since the announcement, the rate of vaccination in Ohio has increased 28 percent, the state’s department of health announced Thursday. The department also noted that week-to-week vaccination counts jumped 53 percent. About 113,000 residents were vaccinated between May 13 and May 18 after the lottery began, compared with just 74,000 residents vaccinated between May 6 and May 11.

A sizable chunk of the increase is from adolescents ages 12 to 15, who became eligible to receive a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine around the time the lottery was announced. But the health department notes that vaccinations among adults appeared to be in a free fall prior to May 13, with a 25 percent drop in vaccinations just in the weekend starting May 7, compared with the previous weekend.
On Thursday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan stood next to a person dressed as a lottery ball as he announced his state’s $2 million “VaxCash” promotion. Starting May 25, the state will randomly select one vaccinated resident to win a $40,000 cash prize every day for 41 days, ending on July 4. Residents need not register; any Marylander vaccinated in the state will be automatically entered into the lottery.

    (snip)

Meanwhile, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the state’s “Vax & Scratch” promotion. Residents ages 18 and up who get vaccinated at one of 10 state-run mass vaccination sites will be given a $20 state lottery scratch-off ticket for a chance to win up to $5 million.

This is also pretty ridiculous (from the article):

Agreed, many (all?) sports teams are doing fairly constant surveillance testing so if this was a widespread phenomena I feel like we should have known already, but if it is legit and new there should be confirmation from other sports teams soon enough.
