We got the first episode free on the Xbox syfy app. I liked it a lot. Tudyk is fantastic at playing a creature that is wearing someone else's skin and it looks slightly too big.

    I laughed pretty hard at

In the first 10 minutes I was pretty annoyed at the very dim stereotypical view of empathetic people (the mayor) and socially awkward people (the deputy).

But watching more the show seems to have a dim view of humans in general at first, and will slowly show their worth as more time is spent with them.

Almost like it might have a theme and ideas.

So I'll stick with it. It was amusing even with how frequently dark it goes, and it's nice to see Alan Tudyk again.

Looks pretty good, had fun with the first episode.

Can't wait for SyFy to just cancel it as it gains an audience.

Actually d/l the SyFy app on my streaming box just to watch it. I like the show (as a fan of the comic). Love watching Tudyk goofing. Also the opening sequences crack me up.

As a comic reader, some of the differences are a little jarring, but I’m am fine with making its own stamp on it. I think the physical humor works great for TV, where it wouldn’t come across as well in a book. I also like his murderous bent.

Hahahaha, $65 a fucking month? To watch a show from Syfy?

Hard fucking pass. I guess I'll get to enjoy the one season of this in a year or something, after they cancel it and nobody watched it because of the fucking moronic Hulu Live plan.

  • ColanutColanut Siedge WealdRegistered User regular
Hmm, the SyFy app hasn’t asked for a log in or purchase yet. It does have ads. I’ll have to look if there is a limit, or if they are going to cut off at some point.

Loving the show so far. Alan Tudyk has to sell it hard and I think he pulls it off.

Spoilers since I don't see an open spoilers tag
I love him wanting to murder the kid. Its fucking hilarious. Also that kid is tough as nails!

That poor hiker though. What a way to die.

Been watching the Youtube episodes and I definitely enjoy the show. I'm rather enjoying that all the vaunted intelligence of the alien seems to mean he's really more of an overconfident asshole who uses being smart to justify looking down on others. Plus, I appreciate that he isn't dismissive of humans because of the stupid trope that smarter sentients would consider humans worthless animals, but instead that he's
literally there to kill them all because they've been deemed too dangerous and has to protect his mission. He's not a sociopath who thinks nothing of murder, he genuinely tries to avoid violence where it isn't required by his mission.
I thought the part with the kid would be too dark, but it's legit hilarious watching Harry's "superior" intelligence get repeatedly foiled by this little kid and Harry's increasing outrage at the sitituation.

I also like the people that Harry deals with, for the most part. The police chief is an asshole, but he's supposed to be an asshole and you aren't supposed to like him. The mayor is bit of a weenie, but he really does seem to be trying to take care of his family and the town.

And of course Tudyk kills it as the alien-playing-human. Amazing work on the physical comedy side, from big overexaggerated physical moments to some extremely subtle and small facial expressions. But surprisingly, they've actually put in a fair bit of effort to show him in his alien form on a regular basis and make that form express nicely as well. They have a whole different actor for that, and generally do great with the effects to get him to emote properly. A little weird to think of the main character having two actors, but it meshes really well.

Basically, the show is a lot better than belongs on Syfy, I'm sort of bewildered they bothered to make something of any actual quality here.

    Episode Three
I'm guessing the man and woman investigating alien sightings are either a MIB type of government agent OR also aliens here to clean up Alan Tudyks mess?

I honestly cannot remember the characters name right now so I'm just going to call him Adam Tudyk.

That's because Harry Vanderspeigle is a stupid name. If they had just named him Alan Vanderspeigle instead, I think we'd all be happier.
Yeah, I'm definitely feeling them as Plan B aliens showing up after Tudyk clearly failed to kill humanity for months on end to figure out what's going on. MIBs wouldn't be that casual about leaving a trail of bodies behind them.
I'm betting it goes that Tudyk tries to advocate for Earth and Humanity's continued existence because emotions (and whiskey), while the other two just want to finish their mission and get home.

    Well in the comic
The MIB is chasing him but Harry is also completely harmless in that version so theyre less justified in doing so

The show has managed to throw me a few surprises already so I'm hoping I'm wrong.
I mean, the floating guy, I was expecting him to show up in town ranting about something amazing that happened to him in the mountains.
Having him mummified in midair like that was rather surprising.

After the fourth episode I'm prepared to call this show great. It's funny and charming and low stakes, for the most part.

Every character is well cast and I personally appreciate a character just being Muslim without having to like, make it a only point.

With all that said, I'm more convinced than ever that the show is just a little too expensive and it'll be cancelled.
The kid being perfectly fine with his parents getting divorced was really good. Also, Tudyks awe of his accurate solar system project was sweet.

I like it a lot. The writing is a little inconsistent, but you don't have to be brilliant to turn "Alan Tudyk acts like a weirdo with poor grasp of social convention and morality" into a goldmine.

I am slightly bummed that I feel like there can't be any stakes to Harry's antagonism with the kid. Nothing would crack me up more than a continued cartoonish, slapstick back and forth played straight until the season finale where one of Harry's murderous schemes just... works. That would be a hell of a swerve. Not many people have the macabre sense of humor that would be necessary to enjoy that, though.

I laughed pretty hard when Harry was asked to describe life in New York and he pulled out the Law and Order tagline then followed it up with "It has... women... who have sex in the city."

If there is a season 2 I foresee him and the kid working together. There will be some kind of revelation or common goal, and the kid will have to give Harry the finer points of being human that he can't glean from TV, the internet or random social interaction.

Seems like the two agents looking for Harry really are just MIB's of some sort, not his own species.

End of episode four cliffhanger: Two kids in duffle bags, and, just at that precise moment, his skin-suit's wife decides to show up... Awwwwkward...

I am getting some real whiplash between the cutesy fluff of Harry caving to the children holding their breath and the beautifully delivered dark lines like
Buddhist monks believe that suffering comes from the thinking mind. They can also train their minds not to feel pain. One of them lit himself on fire. I think that one felt pain.
Also I cracked the fuck up at him going for the bite of steak with Isabelle wrapped around him.
