I remember my mom talking with me in the car as a youth (also circa Jr high) about body image and Hollywood

She was like--when I was young, we had heartthrobs. And they were definitely really cute--Robert Redford, James Dean, Henry Fonda. But you know, they took off their shirt and they weren't chubby or anything but they looked like real people. Like, they were just cute guys, like maybe you would know.

And yeah, when you look back, something was happening around then. Like in the 80s and 90s we started shifting, and by the 2000s we had fully transitioned, into a new regime where male body standards caught up (all the way? much of the way?) to female ones in terms of physiological near-impossibility.

I will never stop being mad at how hard the stigma against women with muscles clamped down after the 80s.

I wonder if the health effects are measurable

since it clamped down so hard that a significant number were seemingly afraid of doing any strength exercise, imagining muscles would just start ballooning at once

Male body image is a mixed bag because on one hand the penalty for not being adherent is way more lax and slightly chubby dudes get treated well and even bigger guys, like maybe up to 280 lbs get treated like human beings, which is a huge plus. The majority of men don't experience the dehumanization that like 2/3rds of women get.

But on the other hand the "ideal" male physique is basically a barbie doll like missing ribs myth. It's preposterous. It requires this insane combo of big muscles and no fat that isn't just burdensome in terms of willpower, it's legitimately difficult to achieve at all because the aesthetic goals are diametrically opposed biologically.

It never seemed really outrageous to me, but I'm dutch and we are apparently weird about sex and nudity according to other countries.

Ive come across like 6 different "the dutch are perverts" jokes this week. Is this a thing?

The Dutch are much more pragmatic about sex - my understanding is parents often allow their teenage kids to have sex at home and as a result are more likely to use birth control and less likely to end in something bad

Americans pretend sex doesn’t exist for young people, so we would absolutely see that as pervy

My parents said we were allowed to have sex with partners at home when I was a teenager and boy oh boy did I take them up on that

Is this really a thing that parents bring up and say?

I figured it was just something kids did and parents pretended not to notice.

American parents mostly strictly forbid kids from having sex at home, less so after they turn 18 (but still sometimes!)

For example, if you as a boy had a lady friend over you would not be allowed to close your door with her over, she couldn’t spend the night, she couldn’t be in the house with you if parents weren’t home

My parents had a policy that if they could be plausibly ignorant of what we got up to with who we were dating they'd choose to stay that way.

Also when my girlfriend would stay with us while on summer break my grandparents were not to be made aware of this.

that one seems kind of hard to enforce

our parents basically just hoped that the inevitable party wouldn't cause too much property damage, rather than really attempting to keep a party from happening

let alone somehow keeping just one person out

I also remember reading a guide that strongly suggested drastically reducing fluid intake to dehydration levels for a couple days and doing a quick workout right before you want to show off your abs / biceps / lats / etc so that the muscles are further exposed due to the reduced body moisture and the "pump" from the workout.
