srsly. Mine's not filthy or anything, just a little mineral buildup. Thing is, there's a lot of nooks and crannies in there, and it seems like sticking it in the sink and using some soap and a bottlebrush cleaner on it will only result in a week of soapy coffee :? is there some product available? Should I chuck in some bi-carb soda and boil it a couple of times?
For scale buildup, I found simply going out, buying a big jug of cheap vinegar, and letting it sit for a good few hours, works best. Swish it around a few times every 30 minutes or so, and after a few hours I find it gets rid of pretty much all the scale.
Just rinse it out really well, boil a few loads and toss the water out, and it's good as new with pretty much no vinegar taste or smell.
I Canada we've got CLR. Basically it's a cleaning agent that kicks mildew, rust, and mineral buildup in the ass. When I lived there I usually poured a bit in the kettle, swirled it around to make sure reached all the nooks and crannies, then dumped out the CLR, and did another run with Soap and water to clean out what remnants of CLR were left.
