Here's an example of a black and white superhero done with purpose:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI4sCz20Lak

It's also used as something to help set contrast between him and the other characters; like without ever saying a single word we know that SMN is a throwback to 1930's detective films and are thus already prepped mentally for the mannerisms and attitude the character will exhibit. Frankly it was brilliant as a decision to include him when the development team could have run with any of a dozen other iterations of the character.

The other good example of using black and white for effect is of course this: The instant the door opens we know that we are in a fundamentally different place and film then we were in the first 15 minutes.

It's more than that. The decision to shoot noir in black in white is too depict a world devoted of nuance and subtlety. It means emphasizing the contrast between light and dark. Which also means planning a lot for lighting and composition. That's why black and white also worked for the movie "Sin City".

Wonder woman's costume does not look good in muted tones, because the red and blue look too similar when you convert to black and white.

The Flash is all red. Why? Well, probably because it's hard to track a character who's running quickly, but the red stands out in most situations so that you can follow along. This is bad when dealing with villains, but good for reassuring the public. So Flash values helping the public feel safe over his own safety. But take away color, and his character is just a grey blur.

Aquaman's costume is designed to stand out in the middle of blue water. But now it doesn't.

Cyborg has had red lights to emphasize his machine nature. Gone.

It's pretty telling for how compelling the movie is that you barely notice Sin City is even in black and white.

I think a big part of why I don't particularly like DCEU in general is I feel like DC's characters and world, more than Marvel, are intended to be bright and colorful (outside of Batman). DCEU just drops all of that and black & white would make it even worse.

I also have problems DC shoving Batman in everywhere (despite Batman being my favorite part of DC) because his vibe just doesn't really work with the rest of their properties. Batman works best in DC when you either let his / Gotham's darkness stand alone or bring him up to the rest of the comics, rather than bringing everything else down. It can be done! The Arrowverse seems to do a fairly good job of it (with Green Arrow being "Batman" in this scenario).

It also makes most of DCEU just feel depressing, all the time.

Putting Batman at the center of the DCU ahead of Superman really doesn't hold up well in a post ACAB world, not that I expect a right wing hack like Snyder or the people who hired him to care.

First season of Arrow was great because the focus was on white collar criminals.

Eh Batman is still maybe tied with Spidey for most popular hero in the world. It makes sense because people love Batman and there hasn't been a good Superman movie in over 50 years

There is room for grimdark DC stuff, but I think everyone is tired of it for now, for understandable reasons. Superman should be getting movies like Wonder Woman (well maybe not 1984)

Superman II came out in 1980, so the clock officially stands at 40 (or 41).

(Heck, I liked Returns, but I understand that opinions vary.)

Comics on the internet is important stuff! You have to be exact when you're throwing those kind of numbers around!

    Also, 1978. It's practically the '80s.

EDIT: Also, Superman III is at best okay, but has its moments. That knock-off Braniac transformation was terrifying and the showdown between Clark and his Red Kryptonite ganger was campy, but kind of unsettling to a young Schadenfreude.

The other thing to remember about color temperature is that the cooler the scene is, the more we as an audience focus on things other then the visual aspects of the film; things like the emotions of the characters, the tone of their voice, narrative sequences etc, etc etc... which is fine if all the other elements of your film are on point.

But again, this is a superhero film where the spectacle is like half the god damn point.

The problem is that WB is run by right-wing hacks who are ideology aligned with Snyder and who fundamentally do not understand their own property. They don't know how to sell Superman, because they don't know who Superman is.

In "Batman Begins", Batman's main focus is reforming a corrupt police department. Which is definitely relatable. Then he unravels a conspiracy where the real reason his dad was killed is because his dad tried to fix the underlying socioeconomic problems of Gotham. Which also means that there's literally nothing that Bruce could have done to help his dad, because the League of Assassins would have made it happen period. The second movie is about his war with the nihilism that drives people into doing evil in the first place, and carries a critique that Batman's vigilantism is what Gotham deserves, but not what Gotham needs. The third movie... well, I don't remember that movie as well.

Meanwhile, Zack Snyder just has Batman straight up murdering a bunch of bad guys. There's no real nuance or deeper social critique. "These people did something bad, so now they need to die." To Snyder, these criminals are no different from the zombies from "Dawn of the Dead." They're not real people, they're fodder.

And this is even worse with Superman, where even the people aren't real people. Superman makes no attempt to connect with civilians, and the only people he cares about are his parents and Lois. Metropolis isn't a real city, and so he has no problem destroying building after building in his fight with Zod.

I have no problem believing that the people in charge of the DCU movies are the type of people who shout "Back the Blue" and "All Lives Matter."

How does the "Black and Chrome" version of Fury Road hold up? I seem to remember that they did a few things specifically for it, but had assumed it was relatively minor stuff in a scene or two as a 'just in case'.
I'd say that is the closest analogue here (if not the inspiration...)

    Not really.

Like, the thing I took away from a lot of the BB characters was how sleek they were; the costumes, the physicallity, the colors... almost all of them were lacking in the sort of mass that defined the preceding series (which also made a lot of sense given how tech made a lot of bulk essentially meaningless. And beyond that there was that Terry was a fundamentally different person then bruce so being batman meant something completely different for him.

The Pattinson batman just seems like yet another bruce. It might be good or even great. Hell I might even love it if I watch it. But I'm frankly batman'd the fuck out at this point, since the character has been in literally dozens of projects in the past 32 years to the point where I honestly don't really care anymore about the IP due to over exposure.

Now, what would really get me excited, is them working on some more fresh IP's; stuff like Blue beetle, Booster gold, Etrigan, Swamp thing, Zatanna... all of them would get my attention in a hurry and would probably give DC a second wind at the box office.

Fuck, the most brilliant thing I've seen them put out in the past decade was Doom patrol and that show probably had a budget of like a 1/3rd of one of there big budget Trio movies.

I wouldn't trust the current crew to do it, much less do it well. They need to show me that they understand Superman, literally the most basic superhero you can have, and then I might care what they have to say about the deeper cuts.

Marvel earned trust by setting up Thor and Captain America before they started going whole hog on stuff like Guardians or Black Panther, DC needs to do the same, but they want to have all the moneyhat without doing the origami to make it.

    It truly is heartbreaking

that an objectivist has control of the DCEU

seriously that worldview makes no sense for most of the characters they're trying to tell stories about

I like how gently the article put that the fans might want a little less grimdark than is Snyder's wont

I almost want to see this 5 hour train wreck? I just can't see how something this indulgent by anybody can be good. But it might be funny.

This is the movie equivalent of Death Stranding. All editorial input is gone, this is the pure unfiltered product Snyder has been huffing in his lab for years finally unleashed on a public horrifically unprepared to understand the true depths of madness behind it.
