Hard drive problems - second hard drive stops windows from loading?
I have two hard drives, one with my OS and primary programs, and one for all of my other files. I did this so that when my OS would crash, all of my personal files would be safe. Ironically enough, my second HDD has suffered something or other, and now whenever I restart, Windows stays at the loading screen, and safe mode doesn't load at all. But when I disconnect my D : \, it loads fine.
This has happened before, and Windows ran some kind of diagnostic that searched for corrupted files and fixed them. I'm wondering how do I do that this time around?
A lot of my schoolwork and half-finished thesis papers are on the HDD, so this is crucial to my survival.
I think I have the exact same problem with one of my hard drives.
Same situation too, all personal files so that if the OS messed up I wouldnt lose any of it.
But yeah if its hooked up to the motherboard windows wont load and safe mode doesnt want to know.
Me and a friend have tried everything we can think of to get into the OS with this HD connected but it just wont.
Without that HD connected though, it runs absolutely fine.

That HDD is on its way out. Leave it unplugged, and go get an IDE - USB adapter so you can plug the drive in after the machine has booted. You <SHOULD> be able to retrieve every bit of data off the drive; I recommend this.
Also, there's a good possibility that after you get your stuff off the drive, a good long format may bring some life back to the drive. But even then I'd use it with great caution.

But I'd find a way to run partitionmagic or something similar on the 2nd drive to see if you can find a corrupted sector or something.
