So using the special leap attack of a fully upgraded copper knife, I can kill trolls in two attacks, if they both hit. Which make trolls caves into nice safe rest stops.
With or without backstab?
Special leap attack from the middle mouse, so totally backstab.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.
I found some dark metal scraps in a chest in the black forest bordering on the plains.
Now to find a way to melt it...
Meadows that are farther away from the center are more difficult the those in the middle. I found a village with a 1 star draugr spawn in one of them. After 30 hours of playing I hope to get some normal iron soon. My fermenter is still fermenting the toxic resistance potion.
Taking it slow and seeing the sights, what a game.
I now play with my son. All resources dissapear from my chests all the time lol

sure wish it'd tell you that a copper deposit could be depleted.
decided to clean up the remains of an old vein, about 6 or so rocks, got one piece for my troubles.
Spent last night building my first base of operations; a two story, max size for lvl 2 work bench facility. It has a storage room on the first level with a workshop and sleeping area on the second. Took some doing because nowhere really that close to my spawn was all that flat so had to put it on legs. Now time to mine some tin with that new pick you make from first boss.

The boss fights are fun, 2nd boss was on a decently sized hill, so we were constantly dodging trees that had been knocked over and were rolling down. Felt a bit like a DK game.

Oh yeah that spooky dude started appearing for me around day 70 or so. I have no idea who or what he is. I was focusing on leveling some ground, I looked up, saw his shape and he was gone.
Well it happened. I built a boat, sailed it to what I call tin island, and then a troll came with a big log and fucked my shit right up. Then on my run back (pretty far tbh) he destroyed my boat. Thankfully this game is great and gives you all your stuff and your storage floats in a "Cargo" box.
Killed the troll finally and got back and I couldn't figure out how to anchor my boat properly. So I destroyed it and made a box right inside my house with the boat components in it. Boat on demand
I am a coward so now that I know where a troll with a big honking tree is I'm going to build a sniper pit with a moat full of fire and stabby bits and try to lure it there.
Not pictured are the spikes at the base of the wall. The dwarves keep suiciding on them and I have to replace every once in a while and cleanup all their debri.
The fun part was that I built in Black Forest, so I had a lot of trees to cut down. Luckily I needed a ton of wood (both core and regular) so it was a good choice.
A bonus is that I have a teeny little plains biome nearby so I can plant barley there and not have to go too far while not really worrying about what spawns there.
Not sure what my next goal is. Maybe build a tower on the other 2 corners?
I found a weird tiny island (like, no bigger than a 10x10 grid) in my solo world that is Meadows, but it intersects the corner of Plains and Black Forest at one edge. I dug a double trench (an outer moat and inner moat) with fences to defend against the constant attacks, but sometimes they still end up swimming up into the middle portion (they have yet to breach the inner moat, though). There's a strip of land on the middle portion that is Plains, so I plan on planting Barley and Flax there in small amounts. I built a high bridge (that takes a running jump to reach) over the fence, so I'm hoping that remains a good access point, as I've yet to see any enemy capable of jumping. Deathsquitos can fly, but that will always be a problem.

I accidentally found 2 deathsquitos as I was trying to land on a patch of Meadows yesterday, and they killed me but good
Then did it again when I went back a little better prepared (I thought).
I successfully delved into a sunken crypt and came away with iron!
I mean I died.
A few times.
But in the end I cleared the crypt and got all the iron. And all my corpses.

Agreed, having to deal with poison which does a kind of guaranteed damage through my armor and shield sucks on ice in every game, but especially here
I'm very curious what the last two bosses look like! I'm guessing one of them might require a teched up bow...
Dang I didn't know the guy did that, as I haven't encountered him yet. But I have been experimenting with Mead and I know there is a Poison Resistance brew.
FML the [redacted] just ate 10 of my 14 black metal scrap. I was stuffing it in, and it still said 0/10. Relog... Still empty. Put one in, and it worked, but the first 10 metal just... gone.

I think the main problem is that there doesn't seem to be much indication that bonemass uses poison prior to fighting it for the first time. Although that may be intentional design... I get the feeling that they want you to meet a boss and get splatted a couple times before you "figure it out". The Poison Resistance brew is a godsend for that fight.

I'm enjoying sailing around, especially in Weather, enough at this point that I'm pretty much willing to forgive the portal restrictions.
Also it's nice being able to bring 7-800lbs of scrap iron to a base's docks when the alternatives are either building Yet Another Fort While Under Attack or multiple longass marathons across half a continent.
OK so we moved to a new base and it's much bigger than our old one. This needed a lot more wood! We're in the process of a lot of construction so there are cut logs lying everywhere. We put it on the coast near a little inlet that has a lot of Necks around.
I guess they finally had it with us because today, while I was fishing, a Neck actually pushed a log down a small hill and tried to kill me with it! It did 0.5 damage because the Neck couldn't get any momentum, but you gotta give the little bastard full marks for effort...

Though presumably you're carrying those potions around if you're spending any time in the swamp
Well I thought I had a cool house...at least I have goals now
My plan is to turn the meadow where my current base is into a massive farm, the meadow southwest of that into a fortress and the meadow that's directly south of that to the point of only being separated by a thing band of trees into a harbor capable of holding multiple longships.
The reality is I will probably end up half assing all of it because oh my god is leveling an entire meadow tedious :P
I am still building what I affectionately call Trollkill Tower. I really, really want to take that freaking troll out with a single assault, so I'm going overboard on the defenses while slowly deforesting everything between me and its zone. I also have a fallback fort in case the tower falls, like if I hit an event in the middle of the fight or I seriously underestimate its reach or something. Once I have dispatched the troll, this will then serve as a beach head so I can clearcut the black forest in which it resides. It's fitting that, just downhill of the tower, there's an abandoned village. Perhaps someday the village will be alive again with new peoples, when the tower is finally able to rest and rot under the weight of troll bones.
Bonemass sucks because the netcode sucks. We had I dunno 6 or 8 people and everybody was so lagged to shit half the team died and the other half had to withdraw.
Came back with just 4 and managed to down him.
The poison is just a highly irritating mechanic, but the only way to fight him is to get close and melee the shit out of him, so you end up in this cadence where you're doing no damage with arrows and fighting off ads waiting for your health to regen in the middle of the fight which is...not that fun a mechanic IMO. Poison resist isn't nearly as effective as it could be. Or we need a healer or something.
on the flip side that experience convinced us to try modding the game to up the bandwidth limit and that seemed to help back at base. Their upload limits are stupid low and the netcode seems pretty janky.
So what's the deal with this game? How does it differ from the other survival crafters like Ark and Rust and whatnot to make it such an overnight phenomenon? Or is the answer just "not much, these types of games just always do a good job of finding an audience"?

Thank god if you die in water your gravestone floats, letting you get your gear.
Need to kit myself out in bronze so tonight will be mining and rebuilding my house.
I don't think that is intended functionality.
It was roughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I don't remember how I got it, but I had the WP for the Elder. It was far away so I never got close to it prior to having the WP.
Special leap attack from the middle mouse, so totally backstab.
You find the runestones that reveal them. From the second boss onwards they're in the "dungeons" normally.
Now to find a way to melt it...

My humble abode. Yes, it's a log cabin.
Time to warm up by the fire
Resting up on the throne under my greatest achievement

I was experimenting with some kinda storage shed but the design sucked so it's getting torn down and the mats turned into bulwarks and defenses.
