    Cap Hill alert, more:

There's a level of arrogance here that comes from living a life where you never experience any real consequences for your terrible actions and are often rewarded for them. Especially when there's just...established media arms that will prop you up against even the mildest of criticism. We've already seen that receipts don't scare people when they can just tell blatant lies about whatever and then a whole conspiracy theory spins up around it.

The other thing is the GOP has become so obscenely lazy that they hardly vet anyone anymore. I first saw evidence of this with Sarah Palin. Not that I think her teenaged daughter's pregnancy should be disqualifying, but to your typical Republican it totally would have been. Then as the campaign went on and she kept saying one ignorant thing after another and it was clear the McCain people knew very little about Palin when they tapped her. They threw her under the bus super hard after the election but it made no sense to me. They would have realized how unprofessional and dumb she was if they spent any appreciable amount of time getting to know her before selecting her.

This became more clear in the beginning of the Trump campaign when so many of his nominees would end up withdrawing and aides resigning at first sign of scrutiny. It became so obvious Trump even admitted he doesn't vet and claimed it was the media's job to do that.

I have two theories on what this might be happening and both can be true.

One, which you already alluded to is that the GOP has just become even more fucking lazy, likely a result of being rich privileged assholes. So they don't put in the effort and just assume their obscene wealth and unearned privilege will allow them to cost to victory. They also have the really shitty attitude of being very entitled and expect that they should get the seats they run for regardless of how the voters feel about them, probably further enforced by how these fuckers cheat.

Two, is that with the GOP becoming so shitty, they've hit a point where they just can't find better people. All the smart people, that either know how to cover their scandals up or know well enough to not get into such scandals. Are staying far the fuck away from the republican party because they deem it to be too toxic.

I can think of examples that support both theories being true. Rich people are lazy as fuck and overvalue everything they do. They think talking shop at a restaurant or on the golf course is still work and taking a phone call on their day off qualifies as a "working vacation." Trump genuinely considered watching cable news to be debate prep because that's the only politically oriented activity he'd ever participated in. He thinks watching TV is work!

As for theory two, you see this is most evident also during election years. The GOP and its candidates are able to raise big money but it doesn't go nearly as far as it should. No one will work for them cheap and there are grifters everywhere. Young idealists on the left can be motivated to volunteer rather easily but on the right they expect to be paid for their services in some form or another. Couple that with Kochs propping up puppet candidates that just do whatever they ask instead of thinking and you end up with a party chocked full of very dim individuals. The "smart" conservatives are mostly in the private sector now. That's where the money is and that's all they care about.

I guess one of the cops that was rammed has died. I came back in while the acting chief was speaking so I didn't get everything.
NEW: One of two U.S. Capitol Police officers injured in today's attack outside the building has died, USCP Chief Pittman says.

The conservative media programming regimen has been running for enough time now that we are having politicians entering office entirely indoctrinated by it. There used to be a brain/blood barrier between the politicians and the media pushing the narratives for them, but not any more. These politicians actually believe the unsubstantiated fearmongering being made in the neocon rags, and they turn around and cite it in interviews and at press conferences, and their parroting the unsubstantiated fearmongering lends the appearance of veracity to these claims without any actual evidence being presented. It's a vicious feedback loop of ever-escalating rhetoric.

    Rats, ship etc.
A longtime aide to Representative Matt Gaetz has resigned as his communications director amid a federal investigation into whether the Republican congressman violated laws against sex trafficking... Luke Ball, a longtime aide to Mr. Gaetz who was serving as his communications director, did not publicly give a reason for his departure and could not immediately be reached for comment.

Also aside from the fuck Ted Cruz bit that excerpt is just so nauseating. Alongside that image of him. It’s like ugh.

The typical republicans of old, such nostalgia. “in America youre free to dream that one day you might send a grand kid to college, and they can be saddled with debt for a job that may not exist, alongside my children who get in cos I buy a library for the college and who I then get into politics by bribing and glad-handing. Now excuse me while I drink this wine that’s more expensive than your house, which your kids will never own, and smoke a cigar safe in the knowledge that if I get cancer I can actual afford treatments, whereas you’re free to die or incur generational debt to pay for any sickness you get

And in the end, isn’t that the most beautiful thing of all?”

I love that old white men like to try and explain the American Dream like it’s an idea anyone in the world is unfamiliar with, doesn’t exist anywhere else, and is still a real and reasonable possibility for most people in the country.

It’s impressive how out of touch and willfully ignorant you gotta be, it’s really quite something.

The whole “america is a place where someday your son or daughter can go to college” is just such a bizarre brag. In Australia we don’t think like that and I don’t think we ever really have. It’s not a prestige thing as much as it is in the US, it’s more of a means to an end. Although worryingly there is a kind of trend towards prestige and making University expensive here, and I feel like we caught that bug from the US

The whole excerpt is like “america is a place where you’re free to stop drowning if you can swim hard enough”, except even that’s a lie cos often you still drown even if you swim hard

I read an article about the book and it’s basically another “oh look what these new crazies have done to poor old fashioned conservatism, how ever could this have happened?” and I couldn’t angry puke hard enough

I can kind of sort of understand the origins of the American dream, when its earliest version was specifically comparing itself to the established monarchies/aristocracies it had separated from. "In England, France, and Spain you're either born into wealth and title or you live your entire life serving them with no chance of ever advancing much beyond your station (unless you join the military). Come to AMERICA where we have a bunch of LAND (don't ask how we got it) and we'll let you do WHATEVER YOU WANT (as long as you're a white guy) and we've got GOLD and you might become RICH (almost certainly not but it's technically possible)!"

It was mostly just propaganda and a sales pitch even then, but at least there was some kernel of (extremely limited) truth to it at the beginning. Obviously it didn't take long for the U.S. to just become a slightly different version of the same old shit, but obviously the powers that be benefit from that shit narrative, so sadly we'll never be rid of it.

(And obviously it was always a lie for anyone who wasn't a white guy who probably had a rich uncle somewhere)
