Are join dates based on the migration to vanilla or something?
I believe some of our old dates were actually moved over from the pre-vanilla forums but the join dates from the pre-pre-vanilla forums were sadly lost. I'd love to know my actual join date for funsies but alas

There was also a loss of many accounts circa 2006. I had originally joined the forums around 2002-2003, but my original account got lost or purged in one of those migrations, so I had to create a new one.

God, I remember back in 1999, I used to look at Penny Arcade, Gamespot, and Blues News at work.

I remember watching Brad and Jeff on Gamespot back when they were young and nervous.

Much to my surprise, Blues News is still around. Lacks Carmack's regular .plan updates, "gone gold" lists, and many other mainstays of it's 90's and 00's content. But it's probably the most chill, if slightly late, gaming news aggregate I've seen.

And it dutifully avoids politics thank god.

2 reasons. I like to out passive aggression with active aggression. Also, if someone asks a shit-in-the-punch-bowl style "What does that mean?" question, it's easiest to just skip the dance and tell them exactly what they want to hear to end it.

I mean, we can just cut to the chase and hash out how the choice to be non-political is political and fall back on the usual hot takes and one liners, but I suspect we all know the major points that would be made already...

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to explain what you meant so I didn't make any uncharitable assumptions about you.

And that option is still on the table.

But if you would rather I mentally file you away as - at best, an unserious and uncritical thinker who does not care to engage in good-faith discussion, and at worst a literal fascist - do nothing but keep making these sorts of comments.

Covering games while avoiding politics is a fool's errand because it's impossible to do seriously. Like when Ubisoft claims their games about political insurrections aren't political somehow.

But also, not really anything to do with the topic of the thread!

The biggest discussion I've seen on this has been in this thread, most other places didn't seem to really care or acknowledge it, which seems to be the appropriate reaction in my opinion. I await more info, while being mildly disappointed that a lot of people still think of PA the same way they think of "Gamers," which also carries disappointing connotations I wish would change.

If someone wanted to read about video games while avoiding "politics" (which can mean anything from government influence on military shooters to discussion of unions and general workplace abuse to gender and racial representation in games) I can't imagine why they'd post HERE of all places.

Unless they just like picking fights, which it seems like is probably the case here.

I take it to mean "things people would find socially controversial." Graphics and gameplay mechanics and character development aren't so much that; people can argue about them but whether you run a game in 30 or 60 fps or fall out of clipping bounds frequently isn't culturally relevant. If you want examples of this distinction, visit the Games and Technology subforum.

I think Mr. Kuchera was more about the mechanical aspects of games in any case, as was PA and most people who grew up playing primitive video games.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

I don't know about Ben but PA and especially Jerry were absoLUTEly not focused mainly on mehanics, are you kidding? Ignoring the actual quality of his opinions, Jerry cares very much about games' place in culture, the stories they tell, the people they represent, etc. which is all very much political in the broad sense. Mike maybe not so much, but he's not the one who's written 99% of PA's posts and public correspondence.

To be honest, I focused more on the comics than the newsposts, and where they met in the middle generally stayed within the culture of games. I'm not going to comment on how actually political the content was - since I believe that this is really not the actual distinction being made on a semantic level - but the stuff I remember from Jerry's posts was when he went full ham on a silly idea with his prose, like the carrot cake post. When I think of a comic with social commentary, I think of chainsawsuit and things like it. If you have some PA comic and post examples, I'd love to reminisce.
