"05/27/07: Added civilization selection to the new embark screen, handled reclaim in the new embark screen, allowed resizing of fort area from 144x144 to 768x768 (full map square) during embark (standard is 480x480), handled basic merging of sites if you select an existing one during embark, handled extension of inside features after dig designations, handled a range issue with river elevations, updated pits, pools and chasm to handle the new mountain tops "
Of course, that could just be which Dwarf civilization your initial group comes from.
For elves the cutting trees & gather plants designations are rolled into one: "Gather straight sticks"
And they all have the job enabled.
I decided to abandon my fortress that was attacked by goblins horribly.. It was running more on automatic then fun at that point... it also turns out I was running out of food.... I need a better food creation system..
Crap... the fortress was also called "FireSabres" too.. I bet my next one will be "UnicornLaughing" or something.
EDIT: Its DaggerFists! And mandrils.. you obviously underestimated a determined axe armed dwarf with war dogs .. didn't you? You will now feed me.
So I finally signed up because of Synth's awesome DF threads.
Now here's a question: My current fortress is rather boring and I want the next one to be in a haunted or terrifying area, but I cannot find one on the map.
Do I need to create a new world?
That doesnt mean that you cant find a dangerous area to live in though. Try untamed wilds or even Peaceful maps if you want to deal with the menace of Unicorns.

My first map was on peaceful. I mean, it says peaceful, so I figured it would be easy. Until I saw the hordes of Unicorns. I remade shortly after

My 360 is [strike]back[/strike] [strike]bricked[/strike] back!
I only have one dog that came as someone's pet during the first immigration. 4 years later, and still no dogs. Does my eating of stray animals discourage dwarves to bring pets?
My metalsmiths are getting slaughtered by imps. My soldiers (when they are not partying, drinking, sleeping or paralyzing themselves by sparing) take their sweet time getting to where the action is. I'd like to get some hunting dogs assigned nearby to minimize the immolation factor.
I just have my metalworks surrounded by stonefall traps. Yeah, there will be inevitable injuries since imps can throw fire, but it''ll hold out until you get some animals in.
Just started on a scorching terrifying map filled with zombie elephants. I'll let you all know of the inevitable bloodbath to follow. I'm thinking of starting a ruthless selection process; any and all immigrants to arrive, get drafted before they reach the main gate. Then they get sent against the elephants. Any to survive, can join "Speakergorge". Any that don't- well, they tried.
Won't they get slaughtered on the way in anyway because they have to walk past the elephants to get in?
Well, it's always possible that they would escape the wrath of the elephants by sneaking past them. My way, they hit the door and then BAM they're sent right back out, to collect the head of a zombie elephant or to die trying. So far though this fortress is boringly easy- no newcomers yet though. Plenty of food, lots of pets... bah.
Pardon this off-topic question (I love this thread, but am nowhere near hardcore enough for Dwarf Fortress.)
Where the hell did "Thread Rating" come from? This is the first rated thread I've seen...
EDIT: Board upgrades? Okay. Thanks, jdarksun. Congrats to Dwarf Fortress for being the first rated. (AFAIK)
Nah, I think there was a chat thread in D&D that was rated back when the upgrades first hit. This thread was just visibly rated because someone in the ex-Monkey Den forum suggested that we rate it as a test. I believe that all threads have a hidden rating that only becomes visible if enough people care enough to vote. I suppose it's a measure for boards where thread rating is common, so that the first few ratings don't sway people before a good average is found.

Damnit. Cave river floods, and my one Fisherdwarf is on the bridge at the time so gets swept into the river. Okay, figured he'd get pushed downstream to my other safety bridge I had there for this exact situation. What's he do? Flounders around in the river, then drowns. You fish for a living, stupid dwarf, how can you not swim?!
One of the long-term plans on Toady's site is actually to add a Human Town and Elf Retreat modes. At the rate he's going, I'd expect it to be don by the end of the year...
Also, yay got my second goblin siege, I have my false entrace filled with traps ready an....

Ugh, Peasant went into a fey mood, claimed a Mechanic's workshop. He was doing fine for a while gathering stuff, 2x Marble, 2x Limestone, Cave Fish Bones, Pig Tail Cloth...now he's not moving and it says he wants gems. Looking at my gem stockpile, I've got: Chrysoberyl, Rock Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, and Rose Quartz, all rough, yet he's not grabbing those. He...he doesn't want glass does he? -.-
oh yes he does .... and more then likely *clear* glass..
Quickly... either:
make ash --> potash --> clear glass using the wood furnace / kiln / glassworks
or lock him in somewhere and hope he doesn't kill to many people.
Ugh, don't have half those furnaces and he's been at it for a while, so gonna go with the locking him up route.
Also, just got my first nobles, two of which are: The Manager and The Sheriff. Are those the good ones or can I kill them along with the Berite Representative?

Shit, had the best idea ever. You know how toady is building 3D into it? Well, one of my favourite childhood memories is Ultima Underworlds: The Stygian Abyss... that shit is getting built, man. Complete with Goldbeards treasure stash, etc. Gonna be epic.
NOOOOO! one of my 2 legendary miners and a rookie miner got swept down a waterfall chasm by the seasonal flood! I was having them mine out the riverbank to set up some tower cap growing space
Argh, I lost my other legendary miner when he hit the magma river
First rule of mining is that miners are expendable just like in real life third world countries.
Actually, rule number one of Dwarf Fortress is that all dwarfs except for a few are expendable.

Man, what a legendary item to make. Mechanic locks himself in his shop, and creates a Legendary Mechanism. Now everytime I go to make traps, it gives me that "Dwarf has created a masterpiece!" text. Guess the monsters can admire the legendary construction of that stone-fall trap about to fall on their heads.
Assuming I put in an insane amount of time, would it be possible to create a bunch of uberdwarves with perfect stats, one legendary from a fey mood, and several legendaries from just working up stuff like woodcutting and mining?
So I just had my first child snatcher enter my fortress. Goblin showed up in the sleeping quarters, grabs a child and makes a run for it. The mother runs after him and pummels him to death with her bare hands. I check the corpse and it turns out that was the goblin leader, and I'm still yet to have been seiged by them...
EDIT: I also had a ratman go stark raving mad just before he was burnt to death in my lava tunnel. I wasn't aware ratmen could FEEL.
Just a FYI... I just figured out Legendary miners create an ass-ton more stone than novice miners. I usually Create my graveyard at the beginning of the game (Usually after my trapper decides to get himself raped by an wolf/cougar/elephant) but I reached the magma this time with no one dying, and my graveyard is mostly stone where it used to be 2/3 empty & 1/3 stone.
More skilled miners have a better chance at leaving behind usable materials when they mine. Unskilled miners just hack and slash and mostly leave a pile of rubble no one can use. Or at least thats how I see it.

Yeah, Toady wouldn't call it seed since mushrooms don't have seeds. I assume they use cuttings or something to grow more, as spores seem impractical.
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
Of course, that could just be which Dwarf civilization your initial group comes from.
"Wait a minute, that's just a bunch of trees!"
Dwarf representative demands that you limit your stone use to 100 for the whole year!
"But I need more stone for beds!!!!"
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
I assume they will still end up cutting down all the trees to make wooden swords.
And they all have the job enabled.
