Weird. Kobold came in to steal something from my fortress, then he turns around and runs as he has this dog with him. Thought for a second he was stealing the stray dog, and I would have thanked him, but dog just came back after chasing the kobold off the screen. Stupid dog, I wanted the kobold to die in my death-maze.
Woohoo! First ratmen attack, 6 of em! Only lost 1 mason as my military numbering all of 2 marksdwarves tore through them. Tough decision at one point though, as the ratmen killed the mason then made a beeline for the nobles quarters. Was such a hard choice to end up locking those dwarves to protect the sleeping nobles from death.
Well I'm just in untamed wilds, so that's not it. Also, I seem to be out of barrels for beer production, even though I have 30 reserved, and lots of barrels. And I have no drinks left. How can that be?
You're probably screwed because it's a huge gamble. Shells can come from turtles, which live outdoors, or from cave lobsters in the river. To get the lobsters, build animal traps in your workshops, then build them in the river, then you've to bait them.
Then one of your dwarves has to eat the lobster or turtle to get a shell.
I never did figure out how to use animal traps. You have to build them you say? Interesting.

Oddly enough all my mothers with babies are also some of my most skilled warriors. Fancy that, eh.

And the current status of Earthenwork, which is chugging along quite nicely. I figure after I get my tree farm up and running then I'll brave the post-chasm, pre-magma areas. Will be nice not having to burn wood for charcoal, but so far am doing fine.
I should warn you, putting images behind spoilers doesn't prevent people from loading it until they open the spoiler, it loads along with the rest of the page. So you should link large ones like that rather than stick them behind spoilers.
Also, there's no good reason a jpg of those dimensions should be 600 KB. Use some compression, man!
so does anyone have any ideas why I mysteriously can't make booze, even though I have a ton of barrels reserved? Everyone is going so sloooww without any alcohol.
If you're in the middle of harvest season, or are producing tons of food items elsewhere, through slaughter, cooking, processing, then they can become tied up for future tasking. Set a legendary dwarf to only food hauling and that'll clear up your stockpiling backlog.
While I can understand your unhappiness with the current food situation, namely that I assumed all that fat was, indeed, edible, would you mind not destroying the only bridge over the river when you throw your tantrums? And could you please stop destroying the trade depot when merchants arrive so that we might have a chance to trade for some food? This is a hard time for all of us.
Just a FYI... I just figured out Legendary miners create an ass-ton more stone than novice miners. I usually Create my graveyard at the beginning of the game (Usually after my trapper decides to get himself raped by an wolf/cougar/elephant) but I reached the magma this time with no one dying, and my graveyard is mostly stone where it used to be 2/3 empty & 1/3 stone.
I'm pretty sure there is a 50% chance, regardless of miner skill, to leave behind either rock, light stone or dark stone when plain tile is mined out.
Gems and metal ore, however, are left behind much more frequently with skilled miners.
Will not use stone unless a workshop requires a stone block. The area before the river will be completely mined out minus supports to keep it from collapsing. No farming, all food and drink has to come from fishing, herbalism, hunting, and trading. Pretty much the polar opposite of playing on a Glacier Map.
Let's see if farming really is necessary to the survival of a huge fortress (at least one in favorable conditions).
I prefer to just limit the number of barrels food stockpiles take rather than reserve them, myself. Haven't had much luck with the Reserve Barrel method personally. Think of what's more important, saving ten spaces of food storage (the mountain is huge) or having a container to put alcohol in. Try canceling the mill and building it again?
Gah, apparently you can't make wooden statues. Guess I'll have to start making green glass windows for all the walls in this new outdoor fortress.
Oh fantastic, the 3rd artifact bow/crossbow/whatever of this fort is now under construction
SIGH
Hahahaha, whoops, forgot floodgates will spill water out on every open side. Unfortunate for the lever pulling peasent, but I had to lock the door into the room to prevent catastrophe. Heh.

Enough storage space?
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.

Regmingkil, "Glovedleopards". Strike the earth!
Also, I've had a mill "nearly completed" for a year. The mason just sits there, and it doesn't finish. It's not suspended or inactive.

The fun part is when he went to cut down trees and wildlife would disturb him, prompting him to perforate the furry little critters.
Hmmm, you can lock doors then build new doors next to them. How wide an area are you trying to block, anyway?
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
