Awesome. Have him churn out masterpiece crossbows for your army!
Yeah, I had him head over to the magma forge right away to take over for the nub crossbow maker who was feebly squeaking out shoddy steel crossbows at a rate that makes glaciers seem fast.

Does bowyer skill effect bolt making as well?

    dang.

I've never quite figured out how to chasm things other than the automatic refuse chasming in the refuse orders submenu. How do I get rid of other crap like worn out clothes?

Oh, you need a bookkeeper, I see.

How do I place this clear glass window I built? This stupid noble is threatening legal action if I don't get it installed soon. It doesn't show up under windows in the build menu.

Through VMWARE, an old copy of WinXP, and some dark rituals, I managed to get DF up and running on my macbook.

I am going to have nightmares of misplacing 'X's and flooding my apartment.

Three tries thus far: I get some workshops going, some beds, but I keep screwing up the irrigation. My incompetence is doubled by the fact that I don't know how to cancel a Floodgate construction order (when I inevitably put them in the wrong place).

    Heh, well well, another victim.

T is used to inspect structures like floodgates, roads, cabinets, etc. You can use that to destroy the floodgates.

Use 't' then move the cursor to the floodgate, then hit 'x'.

You can cut away a bit of the river and let the natural floods provide you with the land you need for farmland until you get a bit more used to the system. Fortifications (one smooth + one carve fortifications on a wall with empty space on two sides) also let floodwater through. So one method I use for floodgateless farming is to have rooms near the river which are not immediately open to the river but have fortifications so water gets in. Open rooms on the river work too, but they are less safe due to potential for incoming monsters or drownings.

Also, putting a channels as a firewall between your floodrooms and other rooms (such as those connected to the river) increases safety as they will prevent the flood from spreading out of control. The only problem with that is that you can't remove those channels once placed.

Welll, Knightcrypt's my current fort. Here's the version with notes

It's grown quite a bit since then.

It's stagnating and I'm running out of metals to work with. On the other hand, I've got two legendary siege operators to fling stone out of the fortress :D

3 untrained hammerdwarves armed and armored with bronze just stood against a wave of 20 ratmen. all the ratmen died and there was only one casualty in the squad. time to get some engraving done.

see, I have an idea for a game called dwarven baseball. I'm gonna set up a diamond near the chasm, set up an elite hammerman at home base, then release a ratman right in front of him through a series of levers hooked to cages. if he hits it into the chasm he scores a home run.

can't do that with obsidian shortswords

He(/She) has no eyes! It's doubtful the dwarf will ever recover with a head injury like that.
I'd save it, but I don't purposely kill any dwarf in my fortress. One more mouth to feed and a few Give Food and Give Water jobs once in a while, hardly affects the performance of the whole.

    1. The dwarves will only patrol/go to stations if On Duty, not Standing Down.
    2. On Duty dwarves will stick by their squad leader so if the leader is asleep, then wakes up to eat and drink, it could take a while before they get to their destination.
