My simple question: how do you get the colors in the floor? I'm guessing it's gotta be encrusting the floor with jewels or something...I can't say I ever really tried that, but if I remember right the whole 'jewel encrusting' thing is incredibly random and you'd be lucky if your dragon wasn't in technicolor.

Yeah but it's taking about a week per item at the moment. He seems to have left all the really tricky stuff until last

We should really pick a suitably high quality title for the next thread (which can coincide with the release of the next version).
Also, I've now decided on what I'm going to do when I get my hands on the z-axis. We're going to pick a nice high altitude area and bore a big shaft right down to the bottom. There will be a corkscrew path around the edge of the shaft wide enough for trade caravans to visit the trade centre built at the base. The actual fortress will be built upwards from the bottom so that the long road down is the only access point.
My key concern is that rain might make it fill with water.

I'll just throw it out there again... is there anyway to play TEXT mode at a bigger res then default? Stepping up the window in multiples and using the black bars just results in more black area.
I would like to avoid the graphics pack... but if I must.... whats the biggest res you are running at ?
It's a site that simulates the stock market and at the same time promotes sites. I've set up Dwarf Fortress there so if people are interested in bringing DF up in popularity somewhat, sign up and buy DF stocks...and get rich with virtual money in the process...it's kinda a great fun
When you sign up (for free, obviously) you get $100 to spend on any stock. It works like a regular stock market, only dividends are payed to the shareholders via clicks through thotmarket. The more popular the site, the larger the dividends.
Edit: There is also a Bay 12 Games stock, so its up to you if you want to sponsor the game itself or Bay 12 as a whole. The original stock was the DF one, however.
I haven't had a fortress with elephants since my very first one.
The fiercest animals I usually get are wolves and groundhogs.
Prepare to learn the meaning of horror. Sooner or later one will get trapped inside your fortress and then it ends like some crappy slasher flick, but with fewer knives and more horrible goring.

There is at least 80x more blood and anguish than portrayed in your post.
Sorry to be a damper on your Elephant massacre habits, but Toady said that elephants have been behaving in the proper calm animal way for some time now. No random stampedes unless you provoke them.
I wonder if we'll get a "(random animal)s are the new elephants" meme come next version.

bullshit. They are just bidding their time...luring us into a false sense of peace...to strike us when we let our guard down.

That's a shame. Evil unstoppable elephants were one of the great things about this game.

Had almost that exact thing happen to me a couple days ago; only the elephants were even closer to the edge of the map. I wasn't paying attention and just clicked off pause immediately. What followed was a frenzy of STOMPSTOMPSTOMP dwarf chunks and blood sprays with speed rivaled only by opening the magma pits.

Not sure if it's only in the unreleased version, that change, but right now Elephants are still stomping any of my dwarves to wander anywhere near them.

I wouldn't doubt that going near a herd of elephants counts as provoking them, if I'm to believe what the discovery channel teaches me. Though there it's more of a frightened stampede, here it's as if my dwarf was coated with peanut oil
Huh. Endgame issues is down to 5, but he definitely changed something about the layout of the file (did he remove a line or something?) -- I say that since I reload it every morning and it changed shape on me.
Dwarf Fortress: You better fucking hope the elephants can't climb stairs..
Has toady even ventured a guess at the next release date? The pace he is working at, I would expect to see something in the next couple weeks .. barring any in depth testing.

Hello Shellshoot, dug into the harsh crags of the Slapping Dens (I kid you not, that's the area name)
edit: nvm, according to the wiki there's a bug that was making the rain wash the seeds out of the farmers hands because I had them stored outside.
edit2: also this just happened
good luck buddy

this is actually the first time I've had them in a map too, so far they haven't bugged me much, cept for the whole blacksmith thing.

Oh man, so close!
true, but it's pretty close when we've been waiting almost a year.
Also does anyone know if the whole animal taming / training system works? cause I really want to make pressure plate activated mandrill traps
