The number of cards per expansion has to go up because the number of regions has kept going up and every expansion has new champs and cards for every region.
Maybe they looked at the total amount of shards and wilds held by people and went, "oh, okay, you need cards to craft? fiiiiiiiine . . . "
Bring it on Riot! With the amount of resources I have, well....I can do this all day long.
. . . huh . . . hadn't thought of it before, but what IS the term for whale-ism in a game where you can obtain such vast riches without actually paying for it?
Whatever the case and whichever ponderous/massive mammal qualifies, assume it's picture got attached here.

to be boring technically speaking it's still whale because the general trend of someone being a big spender doesn't change based on whether they're primarily purchasing cosmetics or power, it more has to do with the psychological willingness to spend on what's available
Yeah, whales can exist in LoR, but their mainly showing off blinged out boards, card backs, pets, and so forth. Thankfully paying where it counts, in cards, isn't that big of a consideration, unless you just started and want everything NOW!
Which funnily enough, was one of Brian Kibler's complaints about the game during beta. He mentioned not liking the fact that you could only buy a limited supply of Wild Cards each week and just wanted to buy everything. I get it, but it seems like a weird thing to complain about. Riot changed that eventually, but that Hearthstone money is too big for Kibler to let go of...that and he actually really likes HS, so it's a win-win for him.

No card changes for this patch, which I guess is fine since there's going to be a huge meta shake-up, but I was at least hoping for slight nerfs to Merciless Hunter or Ruin Runner. The only scary part is there are no planned card changes until October 20th. We'll see how that plays out.

I need some sort of guide or something to try and understand which cards are big and which ones are meh so I can grasp what's coming. I have no idea what to be excited for.

Well, it's day -1 so nobody really knows what's good or not. There are a lot of new archetypes getting pushed but who knows which ones are good or not. Basically, find something that fits your style and go with it.
Possible New Choices:
- Traps (puffcaps/bombs) + Hand disruption (Teemo/Caitlyn)
- Dual Region + Tree win condition (Tristana)
- Buffing units (Unit version Poppy/Demacia or spell version with Nami/Fizz)
- Darkness builds (Veigar/Senna)
- Discard aggro/midrange (Sion/Draven)
- Landmark Destruction (Xerath + Ziggs)
There's probably some new builds with existing champs and archetypes as well, but the above just focuses on the new stuff. Good luck!
After all the buff, Taliah + Malphite was high tier 2. There are some new cards being released that can definitely push it to tier 1, Herald of the Magus in particular (5 mana, 4/4: After you've destroyed 4 Landmarks, grant all Champions everywhere +2/+2 and Overwhelm)

TIL that Predict includes a full deck shuffle - not sure how I missed that before but that seems to counter Traps pretty well.

Yeah, giving both of your champs overwhelm more reliably will be big. Taliyah especially really needs it imo.
Just saw a bug on Reddit. The guy played a Prank spell which targeted the only two cards left in his opponent's hand. While choosing which card to Prank, suddenly Jinx levels up.
Since the game pulls the cards out of the hand and into the playfield, the coding must accidentally think they're out of hand and thus trigger Jinx. Clearly a bug, but damn funny.

I threw together a real simple Nami/Irelia deck to try out, on the theory that Irelia produces spells and Nami wants you to case spells. My impression after a couple games is that Nami's ability opens up some really fun combat tricks, since every spell you cast is going to double as a buff spell. For instance, if you case Irelia's leveled up spell that swaps her with someone, you can fairly reliably swap her with your weakest attacker. That attacker grabs the buff, and you have a decent chance to swing two kills out of the swap. Even if you don't have Irelia leveled up, Nami will boost one of the blades when you cast Flawless Duet.
No idea if it's good, but it puts an engaging puzzle with a lot of feel-good moments in front of you, which is always nice.
Hopped into some Ranked and tried out Teemo/Cat. Lost most of my games, but to be fair, I literally played nothing but prior meta decks. Why did I run into all the tryhards instead of the fun people?

From what the streamers seem to say, Platinum is the sweatiest level and Masters is just people fucking around cause you made masters so who cares now.
I'm at Gold now from my Diamond climb. Typically, it takes me up to a few weeks before the reset to get to Platinum or Diamond. My daily play just doesn't involve a lot of ladder grinding after the 3 PvP wins. Maybe I'll try a bit harder, but it's hard to be tryhard for too long.

I know I'm playing a slower deck but Bandle Tree just winning on turn 10 feels like absolute bullshit
Considering most games pre-expansion ended the game on turns 5-7, that's a step up!
But yeah, I don't think Bandle Tree will make it long-term. It's sort of in the same boat as Star Springs and Fiora having a hard time getting to that condition. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

I really don't think it is, I think the issue is that there aren't enough decks packing landmarks to justify landmark removal in every deck, but if Bandle Tree got popular you'd start seeing it, and then Bandle Tree wouldn't work very well anymore.
I also think the reason you didn't see landmark removal to deal with Thralls was because there's usually more than one on the board and landmark removal tends to be single-target.
Also if someone wants some sort of recent metric to go by when trying to get their friends to play this game:
I started playing March of this year. I did buy the starter bundle, but in hindsight, this was a drop in the bucket and I'd advise buying a nice table instead if you want to chip some money into the game (the reason I usually buy starter bundles).
I play pretty casually, but I usually get at least a rank 11 vault every week.
In the early months I played lots of expeditions and labs, nowadays I don't do expeditions too much (I often get matched up with fully functional meta decks that run like clockwork and I feel like fucking uninstalling at that point), I have 7 tokens currently because of how little I play expeditions now.
Yesterday I crafted 3 brand new decks, where 75% or more of the cards just released with the expac, and crafted 3x3 champs (well, -1 Senna, cuz I got that one free for the Sentinel event). Mind you, I was outta resources (until this morning, when my vault opened), but I got it done.
I basically just need shards and a few champ wildcards/cards to complete two other decks and get them up and running, for a total of 5 brand new "expac decks"
It's insane just how giving they are in terms of getting players the cards to mess around with when an expansion drops. I can't even imagine HS or MtG:A basically handing over 90% of the cards and saying "Have fun!"

Too many landmarks will just mean an increase in Ez Draven and Swain decks because Scorched Earth is the only generally playable destruction. That might change if Ziggs and Xerath make the Shurima 2/4 playable.
E: Which on that note, apparently the deck to beat on day 1 is Ziggs Taliyah so...

Edit: At least I assume that would cause a draw or loss if you tried that against another player.
Edit Edit: And you just stop getting exp after a certain point. I guess they really want you to buy something.

Merciless Hunter to either 3 attack or give Vulnerable for one round instead of grant. Personally I like 3 attack.
Ruin Runner to 6 mana.
