the recent movies are a new alternate version of the story that diverges pretty wildly compared to the original TV series and alternate ending film.

So I actually haven't watched the entirety of Evangelion before, and I'm in the process of rectifying that now. I'm up to episode 7.

Here are stray thoughts I've had from previous episodes. I know this is an old show, but I'm putting them in spoilers just in case.

    Episode 4 Thoughts
Just finished Evangelion episode 4. What was with that 40 second long distance shot of Shinji and Misato silently staring at each other???

I remember an Evangelion manga that had all the characters but in a regular high school and nothing about the Third Impact, Angels, or the EVA units. At least at first. There was some mystery stuff though with otherworldly creatures and I think it was hinted that world was an illusion over the real one? Been a very long time since I read the few chapters there were.

yes there was a spinoff manga where they are just in a high school AU with no NERV or eva units or angels. I think loosely based on that one bit in the last few episodes.

I was just confused because people were talking about comparing it with 3.0 which I thought was the first film in this new reboot so I though it was yet another reboot film.

I mean, can you blame me. Would you put it past them? The name doesn't help.

I went googling and apparently it was called NGE Campus Apocalypse. Angels were the otherworldly beings who could possess people and special weapons, the EVA units, were the only things able to fight them. It looks like a NGE Persona mashup with Shinji having a gun

There are a ton of Eva AU mangas. Most of them have Eva elements in them by the end, even if the point of them was to be mundane at the start.

Also googling these AU Evangelion things has revealed quite the rabbit hole of spinoff series. Light novel where the Third Impact never happened, dating sim, Evangelion but Persona, another dating sim, Evangelion retelling game but Shinji is dressed as a maid, Eva units but they turn into trains, and Evangelion but when the Third Impact is going to happen a bunch of other super mecha from other series show up and punch the problem until it doesn't

There are four Rebuild of Evangelion movies.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

The first one is fairly close to being a remake of the first six-ish episodes of the show, with some added weirdness, and the second movie diverges more but roughly lines up with events up to episode 20ish... but then it just completely diverges into its own thing.

I also haven't really looked into 3.0+1.0 spoilers but, well, from the release of the first movie I'm pretty sure people have been suspicious about it not being a reboot. Episode 26 of the TV series is probably the key to sorting out the entire continuity mess, not even joking in the slightest. And yes, I'm including the high school AU in that.

The last two eps of the original tv stories are basically the youtube explanation video of what just happened after you've watched the ending movie.

So it remaining the main explanation just tells me for all the weirdness they're doing with the new movies, it still has its core.

My nephew has started watching Naruto in dub. I haven't really watched it except in Japanese and only up to some...tea country? Rock Lee filler. After the Gaara/Naruto fight at least when I got bored, might've been around episode 122.

Anyway. Is it me or is the dub kinda bad? Kakashi doesn't seem to have a very distinct voice and Naruto is seriously grating. I assume hearing "Believe it" in Japanese wasn't as bad a thousand times over. I might have just outgrown it, the Haku/Zabusa arc wasn't as good as I remembered, lot of standing around and filler, and they would use the sad song like 4 or 5 times per episode. Plus the general poor treatment of female characters hasn't aged well.

Yeah I've always been curious if things like dub Naruto are good approximations to the original. I also never had a problem watching subbed Naruto, but Believe It! in english got old real fucking fast. Conversely I've watched a good amount of Re:Zero both sub and dub now and I feel like the dub handles Beatrice's constant "I suppose" well.

Naruto had a nonsense syllable at the end of his speaking pattern (dattebayo). Which is just not a thing in English. "Believe it" was an attempt to capture the spirit of what was happening there, it's a hard problem to solve.

So I'm caught up to spider #10 which I think is current.
I was correct that the spider stuff was happening before the academy stuff.
But are we just seeing a villain origin story of how she turned into that spider themed demon lord who's doing all the murders? Cause I'm not really interested in that.
    I looked ahead
Its not going where you think

Good to know. That one student they called Spooky in the flashback is probably the next best contender I imagine. Though maybe the teacher with admin privileges...

I'm not sure where it's going even though I'm current in the manga because it's mixing the manga and LN together in some very unusual ways.

TBH I think Naruto has a lot of high points but the overall quality of the moment to moment stuff is pretty meh.

That said as far as shonen worldbuilding goes the world of Naruto was fairly well realized and I'll give it points for that.

My issue with most anime these days is it feels like there's never any actual intent to finish a show.

Shit either goes on forever into 300+ episodes until it become utter garbage, or it gets one season that ends with no resolution and then never gets renewed.

I mean I know at least Attack on Titan has an actual ending in sight, but now they're gonna play this "Oh but it's a movie" bullshit instead of just finishing the goddamn series episodically like God intended.

I drastically prefer stories that are headed to a conclusion over ones that meander aimlessly.

More FMA and less Bleach, basically.

Gotta keep an eye out for original shows rather than ones based on manga or light novels. They're few and far between and hit or miss on quality but they generally wrap up their stories.

If they're tied to a manga then they're either beholden to the manga's pace or they are just doing one season to sell the manga.

I hate when an anime is developed basically just to sell the manga.

And especially when they're developed to sell a light novel.

I mean they're different mediums. I wanted to watch a goddamn anime, not read a fucking book.

Like imagine if after Infinity War, Marvel just pointed everyone to Endgame: The Novel.

I did look at starting One Piece but it's apparently 800 episodes or something? Like I wouldn't even rewatch DBZ in full and that's only 360 episodes, I just watch the best episodes. The rest are all stored up there as memories anyway.
