This makes it sound like you're standing at the front of a line with 20 people in it while you call your accountant to wire the funds to MickyD's directly.

I got picked to be part of a group to evaluate proposals for continuing remote work and moving into a potential hybrid model. One of the suggestions is that since people don't have to commute anymore, that extra 1-2 hours a day can be spent on unpaid professional development for the good of the org.

I hate this idea so much oh my god. I need to figure out a way to give this a bad review without it looking like I am biased.

Are they trying to say that reason is a +1 to the pro list? Because yeah, the organization may be improved by people having more time to screw around with whatever or studying for a new cert or whatever.
But to make that required and not pay for it? They can eat shit.

Yeah its like "Hey I know one of the benefits of WFH is not having to drive and hour plus each way in traffic and pay for parking, but what if instead we pushed you to spend that time learning new skills for you to do work with and also you pay for it?"

Maybe fuck all the way off?

So you admit all the commuting time was work and you'll be compensating me with back pay?

Wow. Rephrasing that as a question we should maybe ask legal before we move forward with this sounds like the most surefire way to get this idea buried dead in the ground.

I would pay literal money to see that interaction in real time and watch their brain melt.

How much could a McGriddle cost anyway? $1000?

Can I get another week of vacation? While the 1st week was a trip (literally) and the second week was interrupted by the vaccine knocking me on my ass and other things with my family... well.. I've both been happy and sad regarding not having to worry about anything.

Hey pals, how do I let a recruiter down because I haven't graduated yet and because I missed the fact that LinkedIn said I was graduated 5 years ago without jeopardizing future considerations?

Well, technically a single McGriddle is a McGriddles, so $2000, minimum.

Also my boss's boss: "I need you to fix this problem RIGHT NOW, it's fine if you minimally test it."

I'm beginning to think quality isn't a priority around here. 🤔

Nah, its totally internally consistent. They just expect 100% quality all the time. You don't need to test if you do it right the first time.

In my newish job role I'm supposed to develope some office standards, best practices and work guidelines. So I went and made some very basic pamphlets for several parts of the design process with like what engineers to work with, what norms apply, what plans are generally necessary etc.
Presented it to the higher ups and the reaction was all, oh why did you do this, we don't need that, that is all stuff everyone should know even if they're new to the job.
And I'm like uh, when did you check in the last time with the ground level doing all the work here? It would be great if everyone knew all that and yeah it's all stuff that you need to work independently. Bit you guys always hire people fresh out of university because they're cheap and try to hold experienced people with pizza parties.

Yeah I gave up with those sort of suggestions. I used to suggest changing something in our computer system only to be met with "we don't need to fix that problem because if people followed the correct work flow it wouldn't be a problem." okay, but it's a problem now and always will be a problem so...

Also unless they were going super hard, the recruiters are always out there, pinging everyone with the right keywords in their linkedin, I wouldn't lose sleep over it, they won't remember it compared to the hundreds of other non-responders.

I won't respond to a recruiter unless they have demonstrated a detailed understanding of my work history, and will tell me enough about the company and role in that first contact email for me to assess the likely fit right off the bat. Most of them are just parasitic slugs, no need to treat them like an actual professional contact.

Don't get us wrong, a recruiter can absolutely help your search and it can work out when you are looking. But most just work on a bounty system where the company that hired them also has to pay them based on whatever the salary+hiring bonus is, which incentivizes them to push for those for you, but also incentivizes it to end up lower overall because the employer is getting hit twice. So if they DO foolishly tell you the name of the company...probably worth applying yourself and cutting them out of it.

and then I worked my ass off sweet talking both companies and potential employees, get two placed and he tells me "oh no, you either get your hourly or commission."

I had fully checked out and spend my days watching TV on my computer by then.

about a year after I decided to quit, I had to get interviewed by ICE and a prosecutor because he finally got caught

my favorite worst recruiter attempt was the one that wanted to put my resume forward for the job i had just left two weeks ago... wonder why my resume fit so well, eh? :).

current job news; my boss asked me if i would be interested in a full time position when my contract time is up in a year or so. I think i'd be willing, but at least right now they seem to want relocation, which my wife and i decided against already. so hopefully my counter offer of regular travel on-site is enough. either way, i got plenty of time to either change their minds or find something local.

My manager told me that I'm actually a decent chunk below the median for a senior developer at my experience level, and I've also been at EchoCorp for four years now. So he's going to nag a bit about "making sure we keep talent that has been with us for a long while" etc to HR to try to get my salary up a bit.

I mean, I have no plans to abandon ship, but it sucks that you so often need to do that to get a pay raise and I'm really happy that he's taking that fight for me.

Last night well it could of worked if two people played along
One of the managers had the idea to blitz out all of dairy/frozen the problem was one person spent the whole shift complaining and the other disappeared after lunch reappearing after break
I stayed behind to finish {again I am a idiot} I did the two pallets left behind leaving nearly 3 hours after I was supposed to

Depends on the company's culture - for a good company, yes, this is what all managers should strive to achieve.

In a shit company, managers are incentivized to keep their "overhead" (salaries) low, so their jobs turn into an exercise in gaslighting their employees.

  • Options
    InquisitorInquisitor Registered User regular
Yeah, the manager at my last job was fantastic, and basically constantly fought for me to get raises and promotions.

Unfortunately it was a family ran business and the family was very much not keen on paying folks more.

Shockingly we constantly bled our top talent while retaining our average folks. I hopped ship and do less (but more interesting) work for better pay now. Made putting in that 2 weeks a very easy decision despite liking nearly everyone on my team.

I know it’s not everyone’s ideal but I am very much excited to be in a more corporate “check X boxes and spend Y time doing Z things and get promoted” type structure than the “hope my manager can convince Dad and Son to pay me more” I was in before.

The reason it's going to be so hard to leave my current library system is that we do compensation and classification studies every five years, and the main purpose of those is to ensure that we're providing significantly better pay and benefits than all the other library systems in the area and at least a little bit better than most of the systems our size across the country.

Retention is good finances, and when you're not focused on quarterly profits you can actually take advantage of it. And so the result is we suck the talent out of everyone else, and when our people get roaming feet they have to be able to swing a promotion or eat a pay cut to move to another library.

"oh no, you either get your hourly or commission."
that company also became the cover for my boss' immigration fraud scheme

Man this sounds remarkably like my first job in Canada. The boss was an absolute scumbag.

His signature move was offering someone a position at a specific salary, but then after you accepted the offer and signed everything, it turned out that salary was a combination of hourly wage and a bonus program and he never, ever, ever paid bonuses. He would make it incredibly intimidating to discuss these mystery bonuses, and they had no defined structure, and if someone actually asked him how to get the bonus that was promised in their job offer he would basically set impossible goals or move the goalposts enough that he never paid.

And to seal the deal he almost exclusively hired recent immigrants (present company included) and if they complained or made noise or were difficult he would threaten their immigration status.

The general exception to these rules was if you were an attractive young woman in which case he would fawn over you and pay you more and let you get away with bullshit as long as you flirted with him.

Oh also he had a disbarred attorney on retainer because he was constantly being reported for human rights complaints and he would use his scumbag lawyer to make the drop the complaints in various ways.

Oh that was also the place where the Chief of Operations, who had been working tirelessly for this guy for 25 years, found his job listed on Craigslist for half his salary. And in a yelling match in front of a dozen people in a downtown office the COO threatened to a) punch the boss directly in the teeth and b) "fucking expose" him. And I never saw the COO again and someone else high up told me the boss gave him a "generous severance package".

    oh that's a shitshow alright

yeah he hired dumb 18 year olds like, specifically, for IT "consulting", so he could get them to sign themselves as the owner of a fake business to try and cover his tracks. he started that shit with me and I was like "sounds really shady, nope."

I never really had to do work, though.

the moment I quit was, after ghosting me for literally four months, not even coming into our shitty little office, he comes in, hands me a bunch of letters, notices about legal action and shit because he wasn't paying loans, and says "figure out how I don't have to pay these."

I was like "that's not even close to my job." and I gathered my stuff and dipped and then quit via text and got drunk
