Youtuber Legal Eagle about the Gaetz stuff, and man does it not sound good for Gaetz when you lay it all out.

Actual real headline that is actually real: "MATT GAETZ UPGRADED FROM JUST F--KED TO ROYALLY F--KED"

There are some caveats to a few things: from the publicly available information he's not actually on the hook for having sex with anyone under 18 (yet), but he's all kinds of tied up in getting fake IDs and political cover for them.

Yeah, while the public will of New Yorkers might not be there to get rid of Cuomo. It's pretty clear the piece of shit had aspirations beyond being a governor and those are pretty fucking dead now. Where with the GOP, if you aren't forced to resign in disgrace, then you can still keep going up the ladder. That's the big issue with the GOP's silence about their members that do really shitty things, it's essentially condoning the behavior without giving it loud applause.

The impeachment investigation etc are still ongoing, he's just being a shit and not resigning.

EDIT: The commission in charge of that is meeting this Wed. in fact. Attorney General indicated that her investigation would be on the timeframe of months, not weeks. This is gonna take some time.

Also, there's no conservative welfare equivalent for most disgraced Democrats. Book deals, product spokesperson, thinktanking, speaking engagements, paid television appearances, radio/podcasts. It's pretty bare outside of maybe a single tell-all.

Gaetz could leave office today, and make more money at that shit this year, than he has in salary* as a Congressperson for the last four years.

    * I'm obviously not talking about the various kickbacks, bribes, and other extracurricular funding he's gotten over that time.

I mean, given who the presidential candidates have been over the past 8 years, Cuomo probably had a decent shot in 2024 prior to the sex scandal stuff. But I guess this isn't related to congress.

Apparently Alaska Rep. Don Young (of "holding a knife to Boehner's throat claim") came out in support of PR statehood, but I was shocked to discover this isn't a new position and Young actually is the only member of congress to successfully get a PR statehood bill through the House.

Young even goes on to say

“I have some opposition on my side about, ‘they’ll all be Democrats.’ They said the same thing about Alaska and now we’re all Republicans,” Young said. “So, everybody has the right to decide what they’re going to be, but don’t pre-think what they’re going to be because it doesn’t work out that way.”

That is probably the most mature statement I've seen a Republican make in a long, long time.

Alaska is special, and was actually a territory in living memory. Including his own. He'd have been ~26 when they became a State. Thinking that Territories are nonsense holdovers of imperialism is basically a 'Conservative mugged by reality' thing for him.

Well you know what they say about broken clocks... he's also right, there's no particular reason to assume they'd vote Democrat, culturally they're closer to conservatives in many ways. Either way is no reason to oppose their statehood, regardless. Unfortunately I still think it's DOA as long as the filibuster remains intact.

Which, if it is the case, while disappointing, is irrelevant to the issue at hand.

That the people of Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and the other territories get no representation, is a civic failure.

Heck, if Republicans had proposed first, that the residential areas of D.C. be absorbed by the surrounding states (leaving only government/public buildongs and associated parklands), I'd have been on board with that too.

Not any more, because fuck 'em for being constant pricks, for decades on the issue. They don’t deserve a consolation prize.

    Exactly.

It doesn't matter who they vote for. At all.

At this point they want to become a state? They get to become a state and fuck anyone who says otherwise.

Especially if it's out of the bullshit sports team mentality our political discourse has devolved into.

They get to become a state with full representation because it's the right thing and I don't care if they vote en masse for Galactus to consume the Earth.

No one should get to deny them statehood because they might not vote for the party they want.

They voted Republican at a higher rate than previously but still overwhelmingly Democrat. It was a gain from like 20% to 30%.

A lot of this was because Flordia Republicans actually did a pretty good post-Maria while the Florida Democratic Party is a dumpster fire that can't get out of their own way.

There is also that people with the means to leave PR and move to Florida are going to trend wealthier, which i would expect means more Republican than average.

Either way though, no excuse for PR not to be a state.

Making DC a state doesn't really make sense since it would immediately be the least populace state in the union, unless I'm missing something.

I'd rather we combine the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming into one state. Since that new mega states population would be ~3 million people.
