could you just run a cable from the existing outlet along the perimeter of the room?

I kind of suspected that may be case. I was hoping for some sort of wild magical option I'd never heard of.

There is a small area under my stairs where I think I may be able to remove some drywall in order to fish a cable through. I'm gonna poke around there and see what kind of trouble I can get myself into.

One of the best things I did with home improvement is just getting comfortable cutting holes in drywall. It's not the end of the world and they're pretty straightforward to patch. Assuming you have paint to match it really isn't a huge deal.

So to get the line to where you want it you'll want to try and figure out which direction the ceiling joists are going. You might get lucky and have them oriented in such a way you can just run it more or less where you want to end up.

Alternatively you could go the floor / crown moulding route and hide cables that way.

It's worth it, IMO, to see about just adding a new drop and doing that instead of moving an existing one if it's viable. I don't think I've ever been sad about having more ports.

I successfully hung a 55 inch TV in my bedroom over the weekend and until the second I put it up and everything was fine I was absolutely convinced that it was going to fall and break my TV and ruin my wall, just harrowing.

Yeah studs are...very much capable of holding less than a hundred points of weight. The only times I've seen people have regrets with wall mounts is when they buy the cheap shit, and you see massive quality gains as you raise your price threshold for something like a wall mount.

  • PeenPeen Registered User regular
My issue is always that the walls in my house are plaster so being sure I'm ending up in a stud is a giant pain in the ass, if I had drywall walls I wouldn't be sweating a bit.

  • PinfeldorfPinfeldorf Yeah ZestRegistered User regular
Hmmm, my usual trick of finding studs may not even work for finding them in plaster. I usually run a magnet in concentric circles on bare wall until it snaps onto something. 99 times out of 100, that's one of the nails in a stud. The only thing stud finders have ever done for me is beep intermittently and not seem to do anything else.

This is my go-to method and as long as you go up and down to confirm you hit more nails in a vertical line (confirming you’re definitely on a stud), I’ve never had it fail.

Just a little tip to make it even quicker (that also generally helps with plaster too), start looking immediately to the side of the nearest wall outlet. Outlet boxes are always* nailed into the side of a stud.

What's sad, that $2mil for the thin container house is after the housing market has cooled in the area.

I'm sure before the interest rate hikes, they could have sold that for a higher price.

Or do I go with the reputable big name company with a highly paid tv mascot who will pay their claims but costs $7,600 a year?

When I was growing up I was always kind of excited for hail or storm stuff. My dad was a contractor but not the licensed kind. Whenever we would get something like that through we would end up flush with cash, and I knew we would reliably have food and power to the house. This was all paid for by the people who didn't have home owner's insurance, or had crappy home owner's insurance. My dad instilled a great love of home owner's insurance into all 4 of his children as a result.

Get the reputable insurance. It is very likely to be money saving over the lifetime of the house.

Yep. I’d rather just not give money to companies with bad policies, rather than lying to skirt around it and potentially opening myself up to getting screwed if they find out.

We actually got an insurance agent to shop around and give us the cheapest price. I dunno, maybe I could have gotten a better price had I done the calling myself, but I did actually speak to my original insurer to see if they could do better and nope, their price was higher.

Numbers are indeed made up, but when it comes to having the gall to buy a house that got a new roof through insurance, while also having used insurance to replace the flooring on your old house, in insurance terms you are (apparently) boned.

As someone who works for an insurance company, I have a few thoughts:
    1. Please help pay my salary.
    2. Homeowners pricing is pretty fucked right now because of lumber and construction material pricing, but it should revert to mean over time. (advice not valid in Florida, the land where insurance companies go to die)
    3. Reputable companies are generally worth it, but plenty of them are cheap. Biggest thing is: Keep a cloud-based spreadsheet of most items with costs and keep it updated. If you make the adjusters job easy, you'll get paid as it's peanuts in aggregate and it's hard to fight a good spreadsheet of valuables.
    4. Rate increases are highly regulated by states, so that's why you see weird behavior as sometimes you only get to change rates once a year based on limited criteria. Unfortunately "had a claim before" is one of them.

Oh, also buckle up on rates as the P&C Insurance industry (read: homeowners+auto+general liability) lost 83 Billion in the past quarter on the back of supplies prices and the mess that is auto prices/repair costs.

Eh, it's the same as cars. Bad drivers crash their cars no matter what they drive, but the kind of car makes a difference to the outcome of the crash. Solution would be to regulate owners not dogs but that's a bit tricky.

How would you quantify or qualify a bad owner vs. good owner? Easier to just zero in on breed as bad owners rarely have any awareness that they're shitty and there's no real objective way to tease out who's problematic without either deeply violating privacy or doing some sort of quiz/test they'd cheat on anyway.

There are very basic, inexpensive certifications that you can get for your dog to prove, on a very basic level, that you at least care enough to put a minimum of effort into training them and ensuring their good behavior.

One nationally recognized one is the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen certification, which is cheap, and requires a base level of training one should expect a dog to have to live in an urban/suburban environment with other animals and humans nearby.

Literally putting in the modicum of effort to show that you’ve been through something like this with your dog goes a long way towards showing that you’re at least a decent owner.
