It's been days and I'm still thinking about that container house in Toronto and the decision to locate the only toilet in the house on the third floor, in the bedroom.
Dog owners produce problem dogs, not breeds. I'm so fucking exhausted at this bias against breeds.
How would you quantify or qualify a bad owner vs. good owner? Easier to just zero in on breed as bad owners rarely have any awareness that they're shitty and there's no real objective way to tease out who's problematic without either deeply violating privacy or doing some sort of quiz/test they'd cheat on anyway.
There are very basic, inexpensive certifications that you can get for your dog to prove, on a very basic level, that you at least care enough to put a minimum of effort into training them and ensuring their good behavior.
One nationally recognized one is the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen certification, which is cheap, and requires a base level of training one should expect a dog to have to live in an urban/suburban environment with other animals and humans nearby.
Literally putting in the modicum of effort to show that you’ve been through something like this with your dog goes a long way towards showing that you’re at least a decent owner.
My dog is currently failing tests 2, 6, and 8. She gets so excited and wants to play with everybody. We've been working on her laying down (sitting is not really a thing for greyhounds) when she's excited and wants to meet/play, but sometimes it takes some time for her to bleed enough energy to remember.
Also I'm at my absolute wits end with working on stay. Feels like she flips a coin on whether or not that's gonna happen. I'm actually taking a break on working on Stay just because I'm at the point where it's difficult not to become frustrated at just the thought of doing it, which is definitely not helpful.

Don’t give up on it, it can be tough with energetic pups, but it’s a good thing to accomplish, even if they don’t retain all of it long term. It definitely helps to get them exhausted before time to run the tests (or practice runs). Stay was the hardest for my guy too, but he was more receptive to it when he was really tired out and not super eager to follow me every second.

My cats have been brought to the new house. They're confined to a room but they have their cat tree, which has proven to be a huge comfort. They've seen the other cat through a glass door and there's been no hostility, which is a good sign.
Mainly I'm glad for the days to be over of shuttling between houses and having to leave them alone at my old house while I was gone working at the new one.
I'm glad they have each other for company while they're confined and I can't wait for things to normalize enough to let them out.

I've caught two mice since last night, including one who got snapped in broad daylight in a trap I placed exactly where the first one got caught. That's probably the last of them, right? Two very gullible mice and now my house is clean and clear? That's probably it.
Yeah, you never see any more than 2 mice. Mickey and Minnie. Jerry and... that grey mouse in diapers, what was he, Jerry's nephew? One to give the setup, the other gives the punchline. Yep, 2 mice. You're all set.

Woo finally got power back. Less than 48 hours, so not too bad. Had a small generator that could power the internet and entertainment center and some lights comfortably, so it was much more bearable this time around. Apparently my inlaws have an older 5000w unit that they will sell us cheap that should be able to run our water pump, our fridge and freezer, and the net, TV and a couple lights. Looking forward to getting that before winter.
We have bugs that come up out of our sink between at night and it is so gross. I think they're tiny cockroaches. We haven't been leaving food in the sink overnight, but they'll come out between dinner and when I wash the dishes before bed. I put baking soda and vinegar down both sides of the sink, but it happened again last night. GF had the idea that they might be living in the dishwasher pipe since we haven't been using it (because it sucks). Ran the dishwasher last night. I really hope that's it. Pest control is coming out tomorrow afternoon so if it happens again I put out some glue traps and I might need to take photos.
I'll pick up spiders and put them outside, I'll ignore a lot of bugs, but these motherfuckers are kill/drown on sight. The good news is that they never stray far from the sink so they haven't been a huge problem other than the gross-out factor of seeing bugs on your dishes.
I did follow the drain volcanoes with boiling water. I've got a spare Wyze camera laying around, maybe I can set it up and see if they are in fact coming from the drain.

Look around and under the sink as well. I had some tiny ants appear once in my sink but they had found a way in behind the cabinets and had found a 1/4" long spot where the back of the sink wasn't completely sealed to the countertop. Some poison and a little bit of caulk solved that one.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.

Fire has many advantages for pest control.
1. One small application can treat an entire house
2. Really gets into the nooks and crannies
3. Bugs hate the stuff

Do make sure that it doesn't use a suicide cord.
No. It has 4 outlets. we'll run extension cords to the appropriate places.
Bugs aren't coming up the drain, they're coming from the gap between the sink and countertop. Which is weird, since the area under the sink is open and I can't see any bugs.
I'd look into overall pest control. Do some research on Yelp or whatnot since quality varies wildly. But the stuff they have access to is better than anything you can get at Home Depot or Amazon. If it was just ants or something, I've tackled that myself in the past, but roaches I'm not messing around with.

Home inspection went about as well as possible. No major issues whatsoever. Inspector said it was the fastest inspection he’s had in a while. Couple of tiny (patchable) cracks in the patio/walkway, a loose handrail in the basement, and a missing handrail in the attic. Sewer also got a clean bill of health.
Only thing left is to wait for the results of the radon test, and for the chimney inspector to come out Thursday.

Chimney inspection done. As expected, they basically just said “you should pay us 5 grand to install a new chimney liner before you use this”, although the guy was trying reeeeeeally hard to kind of subtly say “buuuuuut it’s not gonna blow up your house if you burn a duraflame every once in a while.”
Gonna try to get the seller to kick in something to compensate for that, but they’ll almost definitely tell us to kick rocks.

I love me a good chimney liner. It shouldn't cost 5k to install one though.
What's a reasonable price for a chimney liner? We had our chimney inspected yesterday because we want gas logs, and they were saying 3700 for the repairs and 3100 for the liner on top of that. Which seems high?

Well, the actual quote was $4000 (for the steel, lifetime warranty model), but it was another $700 to repair some damage to the chimney crown (it was basically falling off and missing a few bricks and tiles) and to close off the furnace vent which is no longer in use.
No idea if that’s a good price, but the internet tells me to expect to pay $3500 to $5500 for a steel chimney liner for a setup like mine, so I guess it doesn’t sound too bad? I’d probably get another quote before pulling the trigger if we ever decide to, just to be sure.

Be careful, or at least aware, of leaving the chimney for too long. My parents stopped using theirs, and it degraded to the point of getting $40k quotes for repair or $40k quotes for removal.
They're currently ignoring it and hoping to die before it falls over, leaving the issue for my brother and I.

The sellers responded and offered us $2000, which even surprised our attorney, since they’d been pretty adamantly “as-is” on everything so far. That’s a lot better than I expected, and 2 grand off our closing costs will help a ton!

Hooked up the dehumidifier for the first time and in the first four hours filled up with 1.5 gallons of water. I got a separate humidity meter and it went from 80% to 70% so clearly I was not accurately understanding how moise it was in the basement.
Hooked up the drain hose to the drain in the floor and man, just constant water. Crazy to see.

Mortgage approved.
Inspections and appraisal next week. Fingers crossed.
